There comes a point when your elder parents want to keep every little junk item until it's disintegrated in their hands. I can respect that you have and still use that rusty antique set of knives, but at the end of the day, if something is so far gone that you don't even feel safe using it, get a new one.

You should join us at r/zerowaste . you don't actually have to be zero waste, but being around those mentalities really helps with taking your own 'buy more stuff' brain down a peg.
