Lamotrigine and euphoria/impulsivity?

Lamotrigine and euphoria/impulsivity?

thanks for the re-submission :) now- I can finally help out! so i've actually felt my euphoria and impulsivity go completely down due to lamotrigine. It's completely saved my life! BUT it takes about 6 months to kick in. you won't feel better immediately. I've been on it for two years and I consider myself almost healed from BPD/bipolar 2. There are days I have where I'm impulsive like the other week I booked a luxury trip to vegas for thanksgiving for my parents and i--- because we had some family issues. (Ok but totally worth it and I can afford it) but honestly lamo saved me.

When I started Lamotrigine, it gave me a lot of energy so I stopped taking it and told two psychiatrists at separate times that it fueled a manic episode in me, but they both said it doesn’t cause mania. So my theory is that medications making us feel better means we have more energy, but due to having BPD, we don’t know how to channel that energy into something positive rather than impulsive decisions. I’m back on Lamotrigine now and sticking to it. Good luck on the mod training :D

Yeah I wondered this as well. It’s like I’ve learned how to navigate the world through the lens of anxiety and without it I don’t know what behaviour is appropriate! Previously my anxiety inhibited me but without it I need to rely on my own value system to decide what behaviours are appropriate. Thanks for your comment :)

Wow ok that’s super good to know! It’s such a struggle because it seems the meds that make me happy also make me more impulsive 🤔 I’ll think about giving lamotrigine a go then (my psych has recommended it but I was hesitant)! Glad it’s working well for you and thanks for your comment :D

I've been on Lamotrigine since February and when I started I was always manic and then the higher the dose go the less manic I was, still a little impulsive but it's when I am shopping but I end up hesitating and putting stuff back because I know I don't need it. It's a good medication, I totally recommend it, just remember everyone is different, and there are life threatening side effects. I hope you do the best thing for you hun. Best of luck to you. 😊

Thank you! Sorry could I ask if you mean the lamotrigine made you more impulsive at first and then you stabilised, or you were already impulsive to begin with? Yes I am aware and concerned about the life threatening side effects which also makes me a bit hesitant about taking it. Thanks again for your input ☺️

Made me more impulsive at first

Lamotrigine did give me more energy and euphoria and it also made me more suicidal. Also, I started to have seizures when I took it so just make sure you check your history with that. Also I don’t recommend smoking weed while taking it cuz I did that and I’m pretty sure that’s why I started to have seizures.

Aspvision

Oh man, sorry to hear that. I hope you’re doing better now.

lamotrigine did wonders for me! i want to get back on it. it takes a while to work up to the right dose but it’s worth the wait and the build up, at least it was for me.

Aspvision

Cool thank you! Did it change your impulsivity at all? (For better or worse?)

yomama6669

it did slightly, mainly with big impulse spendings. i was still buying a lot of takeout but it helped me clear my head with realizing i can’t spend all my money with my responsibilities. with my impulses with how i act around people, it basically calmed me down enough to the point where i felt like a normal person with normal emotions.
