[Postgame Thread] SMU Defeats TCU 42-34
By - CommodoreN7
First time SMU has won back-to-back games vs TCU since 1992-1993.
Is it a coincidence the man who broke the SMU scandal, Dale Hansen, retired this year?
Wonder what happened in 1987?
NIL version 1.0
I got error code 1CJK5H.018, this patch is buggy af..
SMU just ahead of their time
Navy beat Penn by a score of 38-28, so that’s cool.
Crazy what happens when you have the Gansz Trophy, eh?
It is actually, somehow I missed it. Thanks for the correction!
On TCU’s field both times too
And 3 straight years of owning the skillet. Good time to be a pony
Hey everyone look TCU lost to SMU, no need to look at any other Big 12 games from this time slot.
Worth a shot
No you're right, let's hyper focus on how bad Tech lost. It was so bad that Tech should get rid of their coach.
Hmmm wonder if anyone out there has affiliation to Tech and putting together a respectable season as a coach elsewhere?
You get out of here with that. Go on, git
I figured you guys would just hire Graham Harrell.
Maybe, but Dykes has better recruiting ties right now
I uh I won a national title with Texas tech in my first year in NCAA 14! Averaged 83 points per game and beat Texas 97-36 to win the title!
Indeed, ou vs. WVU is the only B12 game this evening, all CFB fans should watch that game. No need to look around.
TCU had two weeks to prepare for this game
They just needed more time
They spent it all preparing for Texas
That is what I am telling myself.
They also had one less team to sharpen their blades before playing us. True they had time to prepare but at the cost of on the field experience coming into this game.
Mordecai is a baller! Two wins in a row in this game for the first time in like 30 years I think
I say we just poach QB's until we can recruit them from the start. We get them when they are nice and mature also. Although, we do have a 4 star recruit sitting on the bench right now I think.
Yeah, Preston Stone was very highly recruited out of high school, so sitting behind a talented guy like Mordecai should give him some good development since we don’t have to rush him onto the field
Would’ve won last year too if they didn’t dodge SMU
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS
Do a peace sign, then make your fingers a little sleepy
Hahah brings me back to Mustang Corral / AARO
A long time….
But not too sleepy
Worked for Wisconsin?
Cook something on the skillet
[Imperialism map update: with this, SMU has completed their conquest of DFW!](https://i.imgur.com/2ljbOGW.png)
Smothering and covering DFW like our Waffle House hash browns.
DALLAS UNIFORMS STILL UNDEFEATED AGAINST TCU
Gotta admit those throwback dallas style unis are amazing
A true Love Hate relationship
Don’t think we’ve ever loss in Dallas uniforms
HAIL TO THE RED AND THE BLUE
WE’RE THE MUSTANGS FROM SMU
GIVE A CHEER, SHOW YOUR MIGHT
GET THE VICTORY IN SIGHT
FOR OUR BATTLE CRY WILL BE
FOR THE BATTLE CRY WILL BE
SPIRITS THE BEST IN THE LAND
AND RIGHT TILL THE END WE’LL STAND
WE’RE THE M
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
Lol thank you random Florida man
RANK SMU COWARDS
The B12 has offered TCU and a small bag of popcorn for SMU.
TBF, that popcorn is kettle corn. So the offer is more enticing than it appear at first glance.
Mmmmmm this man kettle corns.
Never thought I'd fight side by side with a Cincy fan
Now I'm picturing a calvary force of Bearcats riding Mustangs, and I never knew how much I want to see that movie.
Holy cow I found another OSU Dayton flair combo in the wild!
Howdy. I know of two others on here. So Buckeye / Flyers.
Get to Cincinnati undefeated Pony friend
How about fighting side by side with a friend?
We looked like we should today. We moved the ball effectively on the ground and through the air. Do you like the 3 turnovers? No. But 4 TDs sure feels good.
TCU sure made it a tough game.
Pony up boys!!!! The skillet stays home!
OL really showed up and I ate crow for talking so much shit about them. If they can get Mord the time he needs to make plays like they did today we’re in a very good spot.
The skillet is yours SMU!
*always has been*
As it should be
Just wait until SMU starts bringing in the 5*. CFB is being put on notice.
Every game this season is must win for the ponies
Has the game passed Gary by?
Was he looking forward to his annual super bowl?
I don’t know but being a horned frog fan is very frustrating.
Another deep ball just passed by Johnston :(
I don’t get how max has yet to reign in the deep ball? Does he need more air under it? He plays like a bad bret favre
don't worry he will undoubtedly nail each deep ball next Saturday
A serious talk needs to be made, but most frog fans think it’s taboo to talk about GP on the hot seat. His team has been amazingly average since the magic of 2015. And his defense, his baby, his bread and butter, got stomped by 600 yards of SMU asskicking. He is too loyal to his assistants. Why did we bring back Meachum to run the offense? These head scratchers are getting hard to cover up
It’s feels similar to bowdens last days at fsu
I would argue Meachum is fine.
If Duggan had better touch on his long ball this would be a very different game thread. Their offense was moving, but missed a bunch of opportunities by just a few inches
This has been Duggan’s issue for 3 years now. It seems little progress has been made with him reeling his cannon arm in
I swear he didn’t look any better since our 2019 game
Exactly. The amount of missed deep passes were insane. When TCU was electric with Boykin, those were thrown and caught.
I guess Meachum is more of an example of how GP can’t let guys walk. Jarrett Anderson has been like 3 different position coaches/co-oc and hasn’t done well in any position. But they’re friends.
His staffing hires are going to destroy what he built...OH WAIT....he doesn't make staffing hires...he just shifts people into different roles.....rehires the guys he fires...like it is insanity...if he doesn't make some big moves...next year will definitely be hot..!
I've always really respected Patterson as a coach, but this is starting to look like Dantonio at MSU (another coach I really respected, although was a lot more frustrated with having him in conference). I don't know the answer, but I'll bet some hard conversations are in order.
You have to wonder, Patterson refusal to change up staffing has caused this decline...the offense has declined since Boykin...very very badly....he doesn't make new hires...just shifts staff...Like...who lets their Co-Oc walk...then rehires him...and fires the OC you kept...and the offense is completely the SAME! it sucks....like Lincoln Riley was the OC at ECU before OU...there are plenty of up and coming guys...but he won't hire anyone..
His long term staff was a strength but it is going to ruin what he built..
Nah, it's just that Gary spent all of last week prepping for Texas.
That is what I meant by his super bowl. I’m expecting to be -14 dogs at least. And I’d take UT to cover that
Overheard in Big 12 commissioner’s office after the game:
“They got us”, Bowlsby said of SMU’s win over TCU. "Those f***ing Ponies boomed us”.
Bowlsby added, “They’re so good,” repeating it four times.
Bowlsby then said he wanted to add SMU to the list of teams he wants to add to the conference in 2023.
I’ll consider this B12 expansion fan erotica
*TCU down 8 with 3 mins left on defense*
GP: stick with the 425, they’re not gonna throw on us
TCU is only doing this to make Texas’s loss next week even more painful.
I’m going to shit myself if we have a transitory win over UT and then as a Texas grad my wife would promptly divorce me.
Oh hell yes! Frying up some frog legs tonight
Frog legs are legit amazing and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. Detroit used to serve them at white-cloth-tables to business execs and politicians back in the 20s and 30s, so it's kind of funny that they're now treated as backwoods bar food.
Way more tender than chicken legss
I’ve legit never had them and always thought they would be weird. Maybe I’ll have to give them a try. Today’s results aside, of course.
They honestly taste like chicken.
Ignore my flair, y’all gigged the hell out of them. Go Ponies
Imagine giving up playing SMU last year for the 100th game when they didn’t have the Gansz Trophy just to lose to them again the next year when they have it.
The Gansz drives us forward
For better or worse, till Gansz do us part.
The Gansz is our all powerful source. Can't have a bad season with the Gansz trophy, just look at navy this year.
We’re on a trophy collecting spree! WHO’S NEXT?!?!
I think pony boys will do great if big 12 expands again
Smu plz dont leave us we have cookies
Methodist > Christian confirmed?
Non-religiously affiliated university > Disciples of Christ university.
To 100 more! Go ponies baby! 🐎 🐴
Today’s a good day.
Feeling more and more confident about my week 1 take that SMU would be the G5 NY6 Rep this year
That’s probably the best thing for the AAC long term as well, it’ll help validate the conference after Houston, Cincy, and UCF leave
We shall hold down the fort in your absence, fellow National Champion
My brain can’t even comprehend it. The words lose meaning as they come out of my mouth.
Mordecai is my dad
LETS GOOOO PONIES
As a tcu alum, but smu grad student, all I feel is pain still. I know to meme on Zach Evans is fun for all his wishy washiness, but I say this seriously, I wouldn’t even blame him for flipping now cause he is the ONLY consistent and capable player we have
SMU moneyline was easy money
Over 100 yards for UNT legend Tre Siggers. Please treat him well, Ponies
Dude’s a beast
He takes so much pressure off Bentley that we can keep him healthy and I’m really excited to see where this season takes us.
SMU IS GOOD WHICH MEANS WE MIGHT BE GOOD LET’S GOOOOOO
LA Tech is for sure a team going bowling at a minimum.
yeah but we’ve been doing that. we need to be good enough to actually win c-usa for once.
Are you kidding? Y’all are great this year. I was convinced y’all would beat us and I was right until a certain Hail Mary play.
I love SMU. Something about them is so fun and box office
quality loss, hell yeah
Fire Doug Meacham please. His offenses are always underwhelming, and why the fuck are they still insisting on an RB committee?
4th and 1… let’s make sure the guy averaging 8 ypc is no where need the field.
Hire a DC Gary, the defense has been average since Bumpass retired. It’s time.
CUT MY NUTS INTO PIECES
We are all ponies on this blessed day
Tanner for heisman
Also Zach evans is a stud
It hurts to say as a frog fan but at some point Gary needs to be addressed with how complacent he has been with his coaching hires. Absolutely no reason we shouldn’t be able to recruit competent personnel on defense to not give up 500 yards on defense.
Similarly, even though we scored 34 points our offense didn’t nothing with 3 turnovers and it feels like Meacham doesn’t really have a scheme as much as he has plays that work but don’t know when to use them
Gary is in an interesting position. He’s a legend at TCU and it’s tough for anyone at TCU to criticise him given all he’s done for the program.
As a G5 team looking to love up he is the poster child for that. Even as an SMU fan who has no love for TCU, I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gary.
I think Gary is here until Gary doesn't want to be here. It doesn't matter how suspect he might be. I think TCU is going to be loyal to him until the end.
I think he has earned that much, however I think his coordinators have peaked.
I feel like Peterson and Gundy are in very similar positions.
God damnit why haven't we invited SMU to the Mountain West already!?
Man, I think we’re really at a crossroads here. College football is changing, with image likeness, the transfer portal, etc. I feel like TCU’s players aren’t blue collar enough for Patterson to play up the underdog angle, but they’re not good enough to win on pure talent when they’re not motivated. TCU fans have to remember, we are not entitled to anything. Younger people may not remember (me being one of them) when TCU was a perpetual doormat for decades. It will be interesting to see where we go from here, we’re facing some series adversity now.
between this game and the syracuse-liberty game, i think we can see that United Methodism is vindicated as God's preferred religious tradition, as many of us have been saying for years
Is Gary’s seat getting hot at all? Genuinely asking. Curious what the feeling in the fanbase is.
Yes. 5 years of not living up to expectations has been frustrating. Love Gary and where he has gotten us, but it’s time to move on.
It shouldn’t just be Gary, Jeremiah Donati needs to be fired. There was no security on campus while people were walking to their cars and fights broke out in Frog Alley. The planting of the flag is funny but threats to other’s safety isn’t a good look at all when the fan experience for both teams should include safety.
TCU looked undisciplined today. The penalties and poor tackling show to me that CGP has lost the ability to command respect from his players. Idk today was a tough day as a fan and I never thought someone would spit blood (ironic) in my face for asking if they were ok or needing and help (SMU kid definitely had a broken nose and split lip). What a mess.
Looked up the preview by the SB nation for TCU and they had Johnston as “best receiver on the field” across the board. And I’m sure he’s good and WR1, but what are y’all smoking? honestly
Our WR room is one of the best in the nation. Unbelievably deep
This might be a hot take, but it’s time for Gary to go. We’ve seen nothing but regression for the past 4-5 seasons, and increasingly teams with theoretically inferior talent are just dominating us.
Today, a GP defense gave up 350 yards of rushing, which was supposed to be the strength of this defense. The players looked unprepared, unmotivated, and outmatched.
Props to SMU for playing a hell of a game and having a great game plan, but even more than SMU doing well I saw a TCU defense that just didn’t have the heart to compete, and I have never seen that in 20 years.
Gary needs to retire and whoever replaces him needs to fire every coach associated the program.
Glad I made the arduous journey over to FW to see that dubyer up close and personal 👍👍
Same. I went with 3 really good TCU friends using one of their extra season tickets and it was wonderful day (for me).
Love seeing the superior university win.
Agreed! Pony up!
Meanwhile, in the Georgia game...
Yay we won our “super bowl”. Anyway… on to the hard part of our schedule.
The battle for the Gansz Trophy is our super bowl. Our whole season rides on it. Just look what happened when we last played La Tech with and without the trophy
You know, damnit, you may be onto something.
As an unbiased observer, this game was incredibly fun to watch! I think the Big XII should have invited SMU over Houston (or both, throw in Memphis, USF and UAB to make it a wild 16) but nobody asked me so. 🤷♂️
Hopefully they invite SMU/Memphis/Boise the next go around
Yeah Cincy and Houston made no sense to me. Cincy has been a flash in the pan and has never proven to be consistently good (only 2 years of recent success, one of which was a Covid season, every other year they’re 4-8) and Houston hasn’t been relevant in the AAC for like 6-7 years.
UCF and Memphis would have been my top picks by FAR and then probably Rock Paper Scissors for the 3rd team.
Need new OC/DC. Patterson as definitely proved he as the cajones and I deeply respect the work he’s put into TCU’s program, but the rest of his staff is just…blah.
Man I enjoyed coaching mordecai in high school good to see he's successful.
Would like to see this be a regular Big 12 game
I really hope wealthy SMU boosters go ape shit with NIL to bring back the glory days. Sherwood Blount has to be working on this, right?
SMU should be in the big 12
This take is so hot it’s somehow cooling my sunburn from today’s game.
The winner of this game every year gets to be in the Big 12 next year
What happened to GP? He had TCU rolling in their first years in the Big 12 and early 2000s in the MW, but the last 3-4 years have been not great.
The Big 12 has had a ton of parity in the past decade, of course excluding OU. I think it’s really hard maintaining football success at small private schools, outside the likes of ND & USC
Feeling good, but gotta be on to the next one. On back to Dallas, hoping for a huge win for homecoming
Suck it Frogs!
I approve this message
Fort Worth is a suburb of Dallas.
But atleast we stopped the run today 🙏🏼
SMU is good more than TCU is bad i think
Couldn't be prouder. Dallas > Forth Worth
LET THE PURPLE TEARS FLOW
I LOVE WINNING THE SKILLET SUCK IT TCU
Excellent flairs! Go big green ponies
Yes buddy. Two wins today!
Congratulations on keeping that Iron Skillet, Mustangs! I hope this rivalry will happen in AT&T stadium in future, btw
It's gonna take awhile for the attendance to get to the point to move it to jerry's god dome
Screw that, play in the Cotton Bowl like the good ol' days!
Oh yeah that definitely works
Why is TCU defense very not good this year?
It hasn’t been “good” in a while
It was honestly surprising to see. Granted I don’t follow TCU super closely but y’all’s D has always been phenomenal. I hope your coaching staff is able to figure something out.
Bad day for the Hateful 8 so far
Dallas > Ft Worth confirmed
Really mad about not getting the invite.
