Looks alright actually but the chips aren’t chip-shop-chips

Mabbernathy

I did upgrade to truffle parmesan chips

slippy_gtr

That is not an upgrade !

[deleted]

Yeah salt and vinegar and some curry sauce is all op needed

BastardsCryinInnit

It's not what's on them, it's the shape and actual potato variety, and cook. They're clearly not chip shop chips. They look like generic packet chips.

BeardFountain

Omg i want a chippy so bad now

dovahsteve

Every time someone mentions fish and chips here, I end up wanting a chippy. Every time. I’ve been noticing more mentions too.

[deleted]

I've just had one, and I want another. This comment is sponsored by big chippy.

NonExistent_God

Maybe leave r/fishandchips and you'll stop ordering so many chippies

Miserable_Dare4094

I wasn’t even a member when I was seeing all the posts. Reddit just knows.

BeardFountain

I REFUSE

BeardFountain

Well some kind fellow made me want Chinese for tea but I can't bloody muster the effort to order it hahaha

cpt_hatstand

Big chip has their claws in this sub

[deleted]

Ugh chippy tea with the chips soaking up the curry sauce…

BeardFountain

Lol I'm a northerner so gravy is frequented pretty often in my household haha

fruitgamingspacstuff

Scollop Butty with a small battered sausage split on top and then a spoon of mushy peas. They chippy people always look at me gone out when I order it but I shit you not it is absolutely beautiful!

BeardFountain

I feel like the chippy woman would throw her fish slice at me if i asked her to do anything outside her scope of support sadly.

jackrayd

Yeah i think we can all agree a chip shop chip needs to be thick, cuboid, and soggy but in a nice way. With almost (but not quite) too much salt and vinegar

BastardsCryinInnit

They're just not uniform either are they? You can spot generic factory made chips a mile off. Even thick cut/steak fries are never as good as chip shop chips!

smokazut

Didn't notice. But they actually do look like frozen chips.

[deleted]

Are the chips twice cooked and crispy? If they're not its not worth it. If I was in power all chips would be twice cooked by law.

Mabbernathy

They were definitely not the crispiest chips I've had

Cockwombles

They look slimey and somehow dry at the same time. I think the word is insipid.

Chemical_Tower3775

Why not thrice? Steamed, Low temp fry, high temp fry. Damn best chips. Hands down. Yea it's a ball ache to cook, but heavens above it's worth the pain.

[deleted]

I know, but my thinking is that's too high a barrier to entry where as twice cooked would be fairly easy to do and its marked improvement on the usual flaccid affair.

Chemical_Tower3775

And you definitely can tell instantly when you get parred off with said flaccid imitation.

reddit_hayden

bro that’s a downgrade

frankie08

Heretic

fishyfishyswimswim

And why on earth would you do that???

McDaddy1877

I’m not gonna downvote you but that’s not an allowable upgrade. There’s only a few things that you are allowed to ‘upgrade’ with. Salt. Salt and Vinegar. Curry Sauce (not terribly far from Japanese curry sauce but just sauce only no extra bits). There’s an occasional maniac that like thick gravy. And scraps.

NeonFaced

Those don't look like chippy chips.

AP2112

Can only imagine Harry Hill saying "chippy chips!"

andybno1

Nothing quite [beats him saying it does it lol](https://youtu.be/5xYW1meGBcg)

OSUBrit

You’ll never find chippy chips in the US. At least I never found it at any place I’ve eaten on the west coast. A few places got the fish absolutely spot on amazing (Seaside, OR) but the chips are really like chunky standard chips at best.

r-og

I think they think chip shop chips are "steak fries" because they're thick cut. In fact, what does make a chip a chippy chip? They're crispy yet somehow soft and greasy, and unlike any other chip known to man.

blurredlynes

I think it's because they're actual fresh potatoes. I remember seeing on something like Inside the Factory, they went to an oven chip factory and oven chips are actually lightly battered/coated in something so that helps them retain their shape and go crispy in an oven (without being fried). Edit: I think it was this! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p011mkr9

Mabbernathy

I did upgrade to the truffle parmesan chips. Probably a travesty, but they were very good

Diffleroo

They sound great, but unfortunately you're now banned from the UK.

Mabbernathy

My friends will be very disappointed, but it's understandable

Quirky_Assistant_700

Probably would have been happier seeing you rear end my nan, than say, "parmesan and truffle chips" .

christoff_90

Is he doing this in a car or….

Quirky_Assistant_700

I'd imagine in the church grounds, she's been passed for a few years now.

razor5cl

Kinky :D

lordstov

Everyone loves to crack open a cold one with their fish n chips 😁

Im_Antag

How to lose your citizenship 101

Mabbernathy

So what can I eat to *get* citizenship then?

r3tromonkey

Proper chips for a start.

They can have a Theakston's Old Peculiar in emergencies.

WittyWitWitt

Marmite.

Mabbernathy

YES! GET ME A PASSPORT!

TehDragonGuy

citizenchip*

dietcepheus

I would've expected freshly grated parmesan from Gordon Ramsey. That looks pre-shredded. Parsley garnish also seems like the kind of thing he'd take the piss out of on Kitchen Nightmares too. Bet if still tasted good though.

Friendly_Crab

Honestly Ramseys chain/branded restaurants tend to sit in the ok-shit range. Only his premium ones are any good, and they’re ridiculously priced even for premium

Ravekat1

It looks like someone has cleaned the frier this week. That’s not British at all!

SlowConsideration7

The server should be in black leggings with a husky “too many cigarettes” tone to her voice too, with a greek guy cooking looking a bit moody and serious.

Jeniroo2

This is so true! Why do the chip shop ladies smoke so much?! In not entirely convinced my local chip shop isn't laundering money

MaltedDefeatist

My local chippery had two blokes working there, they would often disappear into a back room, yell unintelligibly for some time and come out with eyes pointing in different directions. Thought it was maybe coke.

SlowConsideration7

Ours was a filming location for Sex Lives Of The Potato Men. I forget but I think there was a sex swing in there, hahah. Fairfax fish fry, west heath for anybody wondering

MaltedDefeatist

Are you serious?? That’s wild

SlowConsideration7

Only for filming I should add

Aksi_Gu

You literally just described my local chippykebab shop to a tee

Mabbernathy

Lol this reminds me of when some British friends and I went out for fish and chips in London. I hadn't had it before and was looking forward to trying the real thing. We went to some grubby hole-in-the-wall place with beat up chairs and beige tile and it smelled vaguely reminiscent of a petrol station shop. That was not what I was expecting! 😆

poppiesintherain

Sounds perfect!

SCATOL92

Yes! These are the best kind of chippy's! If it's too clean then the food in there won't be great

panadwithonesugar

needs a pot of curry sauce

zippysausage

_AZ THA NOWT MOIST?_

RappersTeaLight

*WHERES THE FUCKING CURRY SAUCE!!*

Mabbernathy

The sauce on the top is curry & mango. Is that close enough?

panadwithonesugar

That's totally and utterly..... acceptable

FootballAndBicycles

"Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this...AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!"

kai4thekel

I don't even eat fish but that look delicious

YouTooCat

I wish our British chippys would get on board with the inclusion of a piece of lemon with every portion.

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

Mine does, but they are a bit posh.

Mabbernathy

I agree. I can't put enough lemon on fish.

jackrayd

You need bigger lemons then

Red-Squirrel-

You misspelt vinegar there

cool110110

There's one near here that does, but they're posh enough to have tables inside and serve it on an actual plate.

True_Progress6031

Posh crap dunt mix well with gravy or curry sauce

Forsaken_Employment2

Ours does,but they are Polish?

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Mine does! I thought they all did!

sw_in_md

What's all that green shit? The only green on fish and chips is mushy peas

AE_Phoenix

And a young bit of potato!

thedukeofwankington

The only green should be mushy peas. And even they're not very green.

lordflasheartlives

Looks nice

fergoid2511

Tried some at the Vegas store. Daylight robbery, $40 or something like that for two plus a couple of drinks.

southerna-up-north

Did he ask if u want salt & vinegar … otherwise not good

ben_jam_in_short

Why is there green?

AWilsonFTM

Not bad but you shouldn’t make fish and chips look posh, and wheres the scraps and mushy peas

herrbz

>you shouldn’t make fish and chips look posh Why? It's a posh restaurant.

nunsreversereverse

Doesn't look very posh served in a cardboard box

Mabbernathy

I was hoping the wooden pick would be a trident

Star1871

Tried this in vegas. Chips are the crappy fries and I would have expected the proper thick soft chips like the chip shop type. The fish in batter I found light, crispy and tasty it was perfect.

MorningToast

I'm alright with a posh fish and chips from time to time. Looks good.

NotAGreatBaker

When they build a tower with chips though ……

Relevant-Respond-501

Poorly

Jimmy-84

The only green stuff that should be near fish and chips is mushy peas

SmallChild212

Am I the only Brit that thinks mushy peas 1: look disgusting as if a dog pre-digested it for me. 2: taste disgusting?

LordKingDude

Assuming you do like peas under normal circumstances, try making them yourself with boiled frozen peas and mash them with butter and salt. It's a totally different experience to the nasty and over boiled stuff I think you're thinking of.

Flashy_Bother_5900

No I'm with you on that

KFR42

Dare we ask how much it was?

Mabbernathy

With the truffle fries $17.99. Definitely overpriced

KFR42

Ouch. That definitely isn't on par with a British chippy tea! But I guess it's expected given where you got it from.

CMDrunk420

Says a lot about my locals that I didn't think that was bad. Jumbo Haddock supper is £10+ near me

herrbz

Yeah, it's an entire dead animal. Not sure why people are expecting to pay a couple of £s for it.

JoeTisseo

Not to be pedantic but that will be a fraction of the cod sent to the restaurant that day.

teeLOADER

I can't see any gravy or mushy peas here

Nugo520

It looks more like Weather spoons fish and chips, not fishy fish n chips. so not bad but it just doesn't look like the real deal, at least not to me. also looks a tad over done.

havokr3load

Posh wanker fish and chips

Blackcat1206

Seems a little poncie to me!

herefromthere

Never seen poncy spelled like that before. Seems appropriate.

Outripped

I'm sure Gordon Ramsey would say looks like someone shat greens on the plate on top of it weren't his restaurant

smourtneycheese

Taste I’m sure is bussin as, but it’s a no from me chief

Sausagedogknows

It’s fish and chips I’ll give you that. The fish and chips, that is considered a British icon, is not this. Battered fish, with proper chip, shop chips, just hits different. I’m from a seaside town in South Wales. We have chippies all over the place, there’s some good and some bad, but all, are better than any fish and chips I’ve ever eaten from a restaurant. This is not a criticism of any of these places, it’s just not the same for me.

LasagneFiend

I'd defo devour that.

diovh

That looks expensive…

Mabbernathy

Posh in a box haha. $14.99 if I ordered plain chips but you are mostly paying tourist trap prices in this part of town.

reasonstobecheerful_

That actually doesn't feel crazy for a restaurant with such an iconic name, regardless of quality his name is a draw.

BitchofEndor

I had fish and chips at Ramsay's place in Caesars Palace in Vegas. They brought it and the chips were frozen steak fries. I was flabbergasted.

JaggyJumperMan

Over priced shite

Bendy_McBendyThumb

My question to you: if the queues were anything like I saw in Vegas, was it worth the wait? All I can say is, no fish and chips is worth an hour+ wait, unless you’ve just got back from being stuck in the wilderness for days without food.

Mabbernathy

I agree with that. I don't think I'd wait an hour in line for *any* restaurant. It was good to try, for the price though I'll save my money.

Bendy_McBendyThumb

That’s fair mate, I’ve never tried it just cos I couldn’t be arsed waiting haha. I’d recommend Ramsay’s Burger mind you, can’t remember which one I had but I’ll never forget the caramelised onion chutney that was in it!

Llama-Bear

This - even on a busy Friday any longer than 15 minutes after ordering and I’m ticked off

SmallChild212

The shady chippy down the street that I’m pretty damn sure is a cover-up for a meth lab judging by the smell’s fish and chips are better.

TrojanGoldfish

It looks nice enough (that batter looks lovely and crispy), but it doesn't look like proper Fish N Chips. I lived in the US for a bit, and tried Fish And Chips in multiple places, and it was never right. Almost always, it was battered fish with something close to chips (but usually fries), but there's something very particular about a chippy tea, that, like Guiness, just doesn't travel. If it doesn't have the option of bits/scraps (depending on location), and at least 3 sauce options, is it really a chippy tea?

INITMalcanis

Somewhat over-fussy presentation, but it looks like a perfectly decent fish supper to me

DAavyboy

Looks good but probably very over priced

Mabbernathy

Yeah kind of, but I like going with friends to try new places, so I don't really mind too much

DAavyboy

Suppose some places deserve it Carlullicios used to be fantastic

AffectionateCouple0

It's not really fish and chips and I assume you didn't pay fish and chips prices.

parm00000

How much did it cost more importantly?!

Mabbernathy

With the truffle chips, $17.99. It was good but definitely a lot for what it is. You are also paying tourist prices here. With plain chips $14.99, which I think is still a lot. You folks will have conniptions over this, but you can also get it with fried lobster.

parm00000

Yeah hard to tell as like you say they will be ripping tourists off. I could probably get double that portion for equivilant of $10 and the chips would be hand cut 'proper' ones from my local chippy. It is hilarious how Gordon seems to be the god of cooking in America 😂.

Burrito_Cats

Restaurant fish and chips is different to chippy fish and chips

Ynys_cymru

Pretentious

SmellBusy

Shit ...well below standards

third-try

Should be wrapped in a newspaper.

Nicko5000

What’s the green crap ?

BaitmasterG

It's got a fucking salad on it and Gordon Ramsey is a cunt

magentafridge

These aren't chips. Fish look ok, but small. 4/10.

badshot637

WHY IS THERE FRUIT?

Mabbernathy

😂😂😂 And a vegetable too!

TTRPGsandRPDs

Looks both fishy, and chippy. Well done. Although all I wanna do is drown it in malt vinegar.

Mabbernathy

Next time I'm there I should find out if they even have it.

-LetThereBeLight-

It looks great, I’d love to try it!

Squishy-Cthulhu

Those aren't chips, they're fries.

erraticbeing

How much does Gordon charge for this travesty

markynl1

That fish looks overcooked.

[deleted]

ew vegetables

TheLatimerLout

Been once, winced at the price disappointed with the product

_MicroWave_

Looks bloody delicious. Nothing like you get from a 'standard' chippy mind.

Weak-Newt-5853

It looks pretty banging to me to be honest!

Civil-Artist

Looks posher than what I’m used to here. He does tend to like making standard things a bit more ‘up market’ - seen him do this in Ramsey’s kitchen nightmares which I enjoy watching.

TheLimeyLemmon

Well it's not chippy chips, but I'm not stupid, I know it's *not trying to be*. Never tried it, but it looks nice, I'd eat it.

No_you_choose_a_name

That looks fucking amazing. Don't listen to what anyone says.

timrojaz82

No scraps?

IWAHalot

Blech. Way too clean

NerdyDirt

What's all of that green shit?

jodorthedwarf

Wrong sort, too little grease, and a sore lack of newspaper for wrapping them up in. They're good restaurant chips but they don't hold a candle to fish and chips from a tacky chippy staffed exclusively by Polish people or Romanians with one elderly English bloke at the front of house.

Blasphoumy69

Looks fucking amazing to me

Blazewalker452

Looks like a $9.99 meal from a food truck vendor

[deleted]

It looks nice but it's not chip shop grub.

lottus4

Where do you get this? In the US?

Mabbernathy

Yeah, Gordon Ramsay has a couple of restaurants here. I actually think he's irritating, but my friends wanted to try it.

CoffeeGood_

I frequent the one in Las Vegas in the strip it’s not bad and I do like his sauce choices. It’s pretty good. However if you are in Vegas I recommend The Crown and Anchor for more authentic fish and chips.

quellflynn

no scraps?

tally_ho_pip_pip

Could do with some mushy peas.

memerismlol

Fish is fine but the chips look like someone actually wanted to make them so it’s a no from me

oinkosaurus

0/10…overcomplicated

Llama-Bear

If I went to the chippy and got that I’d be fuming. This seems quite a way from the platonic ideal of fish and chips to me: 1) what’s that green shit doing in there? Only acceptable greenery is mushy peas; 2) chips are all wrong. Stodgy chippy chips needed so they can soak up loads of vinegar and salt; 3) that vinegar is nowhere near brown enough; 4) the fish should be one comically large piece, not multiple smaller; 5) wax paper > boxes; 6) I should get dinner for 2 with change from £20, including my sneaky car snack of a battered sausage)

Mabbernathy

3. There's no vinegar in sight here....😵‍💫 I thought about asking if they had it.

Llama-Bear

Isn’t that the top left sauce? Presumed something wanky like champagne vinegar?

Mabbernathy

Nope that's curry sauce and the one below it is tartar sauce

Llama-Bear

Why isn’t the curry sauce a tan colour and thick enough to hang wallpaper with?

OBZeta

Needs chippy chips and curry sauce/mushy peas

RealColdLogic

Cheese and battered fish? Blasphemy!

karriesully

Haven’t had them but they look delicious. That said: Ramsay has a number of restaurants here and I’ve never had a bad meal at any of them. His burger restaurant in Chicago is probably one of the best burger/chips meals I’ve had. Not quite as good as Achatz (Alinea), Bayless (Frontera), Duffy (Ever/Grace) but fills a smart middle-ground gap in the market.

VividDimension5364

He rails against garnish on a plate, yet has half a ton of salad in that?

chisel_pig

Posh, wanky & unnecessary.

JayLife89

The real question is....how much did it cost/was it worth it?

Sneezart

Looks like it could be a fish sandwich.

mybabyiscrying

Looks a bit poncy to me but looks tasty though

MILO234

Needs more parsley

SardinePicnic

WHERE’S THE LAMB SAUCE?

sofiaonomateopia

Chips are wrong and no vinegar and what’s with the onion and coriander? Where’s the newspaper to serve it in? I have no idea what those side sauces are BUT fish batter looks good albeit a bit dark. 10/10 for effort tho!

Mabbernathy

Gordon Ramsay's standards ought to be higher than "effort"! What looks like onion is the parm on the truffle chips and the sauces are tartar and curry

Ok_Albatross6576

Looks good, but bet it's at least 5 times more expensive then at my local chippy

Raianmoore

That fish looks beautiful, but the chips need to bw Chinese chippy style

HybridHusky_

It's looks to clean. And the chips aren't proper chip shop chips

Mr_Cochese

Looks like a kid’s menu portion. Chips should be spilling out into the next timezone. What’s all that green shit on it where heart-stopping levels of salt and vinegar should be?

EvolvingEachDay

Pretty standard🤷‍♂️

Imperius4232

That's not a chippy fish and chips

[deleted]

That needs proper chips with scraps and curry sauce on

Diddleymazzz

They just don’t taste right without the newspaper

pwuk

Nothing beats Mrs Cod (and Mr Ram} https://ramskebab.com/

Baileybankai

Dont think this would satisfy a working man from Lancashire.

p_epsiloneridani

Fish looks good but the chips look like the cheap catering ones
