Hear me out. Use some pink and some teal and jazz that bad boy up 90's style (or rugrats style as someone mentioned) and perhaps do a couple of simple shapes and maybe we'll have something awesome.
Welp... Now I gotta Rocko up the living room.
Oh I'm nauseous, I'm listless.
Add some tape, wash your hands. Add some tape, wash your hands. Add some tape…
I love how obscure and generation specific that reference is, but you both got it. I love you guys as much.
This entire thread is making me so happy.
It was a hoot!
“Turn the page, wash ya hands, turn the page, wash ya hands.”
Rockoo's Moderrn Life!
*^(Rocko's Modern Life!)*
That was a hoot!
Don't forget to add a picture of a sad crying clown in an iron lung.
Gonna make it modern?
Even my bathroom is a bathroom!
Yeah, and also cut the edges with some scissors so you don't have ripped uneven ends...
My first thought as watching this vid. One person cut one person stick.
Boom way better.
Yeah pattern looks good. Just needs to be done in paint/colours
Might be Renters and can't paint it.
Have you ever put tape like this on something and let it sit? It starts to get crumbly and dusty, especially if you let sunlight hit it. Then, you're stuck with a wall that looks like shit and has been stained by peeling tape.
Gaffer tape comes in many colors ;) masking tape does exactly like you say, and I would definitely recommend against it.
They were better off using stencils and paint
Ok hear me out, neon duck tape/electrical tape, scissors,a basement, a light system, sound system, time and money… and BOOM a rave room in your own home!
But duct tape will wreck the paint when it's time to take it off
Yeah, maybe this could be fun as a temporary thing like for a themed party
Yeah I was gonna say some glitter washi tape and this is a pretty fun and cheap apartment/rental deco idea (not permanent or damaging)
Have you tried to remove masking tape from a painted surface after 6 months?
The paint, and some wall texture will be removed. Maybe even some rippings of drywall paper will come out, peeling more texture and paint.
This would be a nightmare to correct.
I think the main problem is a lack of attention to detail. You could pull it off with better colours and sharp edges on the ends of the tape for sure.
You still probably don't want to do it with tape
SPONGE PAINT THAT ISH!
Fuck you that's a great idea.
That style is called Memphis Design pattern.
. . . So. . . Tape wall?
Do you have picture reference?
Paint the wall then peel them off and you would have a better effect
Thats what I thought they were going to do haha
Can't do that in a rental
I paint my rentals all the time. Landlords generally don’t care if you just paint it back (properly) before you leave. I’ve even had a landlord who liked the color and didn’t make me change it back
Edit: this is in Florida. Not sure of the regulations elsewhere
E2: always ask first obv
My last 3 leases said I couldn't even use blutak on the walls.
I'm not allowed to even look at the walls.
You guys have walls?
I’m just a penis that cries and eats
It varies a lot, but never hurts to ask. I really don't want to have to repaint while moving out though so I've never bothered.
Oh I mean yeah always ask on account of the risk of being charged your deposit. Lot of places in FL don’t let you paint.
Yeah my first landlady was awesome, let us paint the walls and even stick nails in them. The place was a bit scruffy when we moved in and she said she was getting it properly remodeled at the end of our tenancy so we could do whatever; I checked after moving out and she put the rent up by nearly a hundred quid so it's not like we were being ripped off by living in it before the remodelling either.
My last rental before buying, everything was wood paneling and hideously dark. I asked if I could paint a neutral color bc that was the only way I’d move in and they approved. When I moved out - after updating the cabinets, painting, fixing the shelving and patching other little issues - she tried to keep my entire deposit because her vacuum clogged and I had painted the walls. I threatened court and got it back bc I had taken pics of how clean it actually was the day we left and had the texts of her approving us to paint thankfully. Then I found out they raised the rent $150/mo bc it looked so much nicer. Some landlords are just assholes and try to lie a way to keep your money, so just look out and always keep your proof of little things like that.
Don't think there are any regulations about this, it's just your agreement with your specific landlord.
I did this to a rental where all the walls were pastel yellow - not cream, not beige, PASTEL YELLOW with a lot of yellow.
everyone loved the shade we painted so much. Then came move out time... and potential future renter who came to view the place sat down to sign the lease and then backed out when they heard that the walls would be painted back to that hideous pastel yellow, lol.
We were friends with owners of the property, and could not figure out why they insisted on the pastel yellow so hard for every damn room but the bathroom (which was light terracotta before terracotta was cool - definitely my favorite room).
I rented a house out once and told the people they could paint but asked they get my approval for the colors first. Well they didn't, and when they painted they also didn't mask anything and got paint on the carpet, trim and ceiling too.
I now understand why so many landlords won't allow tenants to do anything.
My lease explicitly states I am allowed the paint the unit as long as I pay to have it painted back to a neutral shade before I move out.
This is what I learned. Lived in an apartment for a couple years. I asked the property management company if I could paint one small wall as an accent. The site manager decided that meant I already did it and had maintenance come do "random" checks on me for 3 months after. Only after I yelled at her was she finally satisfied that I didn't/wouldn't paint without HER permission.
What I hadn't realized is that the lease said I could paint without asking anyone's permission, as long as it was painted back as I left. When I brought that up after giving her an earful for sending maintenance to check on me repeatedly, she was adamant that stipulation was "Only for non-remodeled units and units that had been used by multiple tenants". I then very clearly told her that just because she didn't like it doesn't mean she gets to make up specificity on something in a legal document & that I wouldn't hesitate to call the people above her to tell them exactly what kind of bullshit she's pulling here. She left me alone after that... I think she was fired or moved to another complex because I never had to deal with her again. I can only imagine how many people she power tripped on though. SMH.
Not allowed in a lot of leases.
if I was renting my house to someone I would not want them painting it for me. No thank you.
If you’re trying to keep a tenant for more than short term leasing, you absolutely should let them make it their home. People will rent for 10+ years, and you’ll see the inside 15-20 times. It’s an investment for you, and the less times you need to flip it, the cheaper. Repainting costs under $50-100 a room if you’re at all able to paint, where even a couple stains on the floor are going to be way more. It’s just not at all a big deal compared to so many other things landlords have to deal with. If they care enough to want to paint it and make it their home, they most likely will try to take care of the other, much more expensive things that can go wrong in a rental. A single bathroom vanity can cost as much as repainting an entire inside of a house.
Tape left on a wall will tear the paint off anyway
I assume putting tape all over a wall is worse than painting. At least you can repaint the wall. But taking all the tape off is gonna be a bitch.
You can but you have to see with your tenant if he wants it back the same way as before or not when you leave ...
Depends on the rental. We couldn't in my house, but a few of my friends could.
I have lived places in Washington that did not allow you to paint or hang things up, others who didn't care, even put up molding on the top of the rooms and painted the ceiling dark blue, painted the old moulding dark brown. Landlord loved it and didn't care, we didn't change it back when we moved, and still got our security deposit back.
Depends where you live. In Germany it's super normal to paint the walls in a rental. I found it really strange when I first came here from NZ where it's usually not allowed
Yeah, I was like 'oh that will look cool!' but then they didn't paint and I was so confused.
Paint the wall a certain color, then put the tape confetti, paint the wall white and you'll have this effect colored in the wall instead of being tape.
Yeah, if you don't do this, it's going to be fairly obvious you just stuck tape all over the walls to pretty much everything except a camera. Plus that tape will start to wear out after not very long and it'll look even worse.
ngl—i don't think it looks half bad. it's not my style, but neither do I think it looks like a complete shit show. less diwhy to me and more di-they almost had it.
It doesn't look like a shitshow *from 15 feet away*. I promise you it looks like masking tape stuck to a wall any closer than that.
There is a rule of thumb in theatre called the “30ft rule.”
You don’t have to make props and sets look good up close cause the audience is always at least 30ft away.
This video is making me very uneasy and I think they have zero sense of interior design
Most wall treatments in cheap apartments look shitty close up. For how cheap and easy this is I don't hate the look at all. It's vastly better than almost everything in this sub.
I mean, to me it **does** kind of look like a complete shitshow.
With all the brown tape, it looks like some severely backed up individual laid a bunch of logs all over the walls.
This sub is actually full of cool stuff.
People post videos thinking this is actually something like /r/anythingDIYisstupid
This is where I’m at
everything starts to peel two weeks later, but for 14 days you feel like you’re in a Taco Bell from the 90s
Without teal and sunset colors, it's just a fraud. Looks like a tortilla.
I miss bisexual taco bell
If the tape were different colours it coulbe alright. Reminds me of rugrats style.
this is pretty harmless all things considered when compared to some of the other hacks
the tape will eventually dry and start to peel. The adhesive residue will look gross and be annoying to clean.
If not impossible. I had glow in the dark stickers on my wardrobe as a kid and took them off over a decade ago. Tried every adhesive remover and it's still there. I'll need to sand it off if I ever repaint it.
At least there wasn't any concrete or hot glue
Her expression at the end doesn’t make me want to try this. Otherwise I maybe would have
Tape all that, paint the whole wall with a new color and peel all that tape? That's just me tho
It's packing tape. That's not coming off cleanly. Would maybe work with masking tape though.
This is what I thought they were doing.
Would make more sense to paint over it and take off the tape
Would have been better if it wasn't brown. Honestly not bad at all.
I like that this is a DIY tapewall. Who can afford the prices contractors charge for them?
I expected them to paint the wall and take the tape off but no
That's actually not bad. Will probably peel eventually though
i mean if they cut the tape, painted, then peeled...
My walls look exactly like that except they are used band-aids.
Great idea, I'll do that in the room with my used condom chandelier!
I think her facial expression at the end sums it up appropriately.
Equal parts confusion / embarrassment.
This is actually nice tho
Hey y’all tape wall
I assumed they’d paint the wall over the tape and peel it off, which would look kind of cool. Nope. Just a tape wall.
Someone isn’t getting their deposit back…
I actually really like this id just worry about the adhesive peeling
It's not terrible and a decent way to decorate a rental with no lasting damage
v0v not that bad.
Probably bad long term with the glue starting to peel off, but from a design standpoint it okay imo.
Could just paint the wall and then remove all the tape.
Worst part: I don't hate it
it actually looks good
It honestly looks decent from far, probably would be way bett if they actually cut the tape but it's not horrible. Wouldn't do it in my house though.
Maybe paint the wall and then add some shapes and things after. It could be a cool retro type wall, but with just tape? That’d be awful.
Actually… this could be a cool way to build up shading by the density of the tape in different areas if you wanted to create a shading effect and do some actual art. Like imagine a giant portrait of thanos in your living room opposite of the tv.
Goofy stuff here
Distance is the key feature here. Far away, it looks great! Right up on it, I just want to pick it off the wall.
Just paint over the tape and then peel it off. There. Ya got that weird wall design
Hmm…..Definitely not the worst thing I’ve seen on this subreddit lol
I think it’s a decent idea if you need a temporary background for pictures or something. Maybe with different colors.
Gotta paint the wall in teal or something then take the tape off and you're back in the 90s.
It’s not too bad. Kinda reminds me of the 80s
As someone who has had to paint a wall, don’t do this. The adhesive will stick the backer won’t. You will not get your security deposit back. Just buy a poster.
It don't matter what tape you use, after a while it's permanent. How's your drywall repair skills?
Even painters tape?
Read the inside of the roll, or the package and should have a surface disclaimer on which surfaces not to stick it on. I used blue tape that was removing my clear coat on stained wood so use a tester spot.
It is not that bad of an idea. I hereby declare this exempt from this sub.
Is this some sort of drug induced therapy to prevent people from killing themselves?
Super easy, super cheap, super ugly!
Does not even look good.
Now peal it off
Tell me you've never heard of Washi Tape without telling me you've never heard of Washi Tape.
Dumb asses you go first.....
Edit: Changed it to Washi.
uh, do you mean washi tape bud?
The one on the right looks like an Olsen twin.
Super easy. Super cheap. Super shit.
I mean it doesnt look THAT bad but it should be done while wall painting but not later with tape
I mean I understand where they were going with this, but why not just use paint??
My guess would be if you're renting
Looks bad IMO
They really shouldn't have put the tape behind the sign.
just why, it looks like dog shit thrown on a wall
This shit low-key go hard
I could see that in a backery. That's about it
Her face at the end says it all
maybe if they used different colors or painted over it and then peeled off the tape it might look better
I like it
These girls dress like my aunt Ruth in 1997
It would look nice if it was a tan or gold paint I suppose
It's not really that bad looking from a distance. But it'll definitely look like shit when close enough
This absolutely triggered me. I recently spent months painstakingly cleaning and painting walls in my house to remove old adhesive and glow in the dark stickers.
It looks pretty okay from far at least. Now paint the wall a different color and peel off the tape.
They could’ve at least used colored tape, or cut the tape with scissors so the wall doesn’t look like it’s poorly patched up.
Her face at the end would be my face if I was the landlord
The 90’s called they want their wall back
Why can't they just hang up pictures of sports or anime like normal people?
[This face says it all.](https://ibb.co/tcQPCXD)
my son does the same thing, but with boogers.
This is going to be a tremendous pain in the ass to fix when it’s time to repaint.
I don’t hate it…
I expected them to at least paint over it and then peel it off...
Why not get those color scotch tapes? This feels like a u/itsgoodBUTitcouldBeBetter
I hate myself for liking this.
It looks shit and probably won't hold anything for an extended period
Honestly, I kind of like it...
Now, if it was paint, and maybe a blue color then it wouldn't be bad.
Good for cgi, I suppose
Reminds me of the ugly ass counter in my house
At least CUT the tape pieces rather than tear it
Seems pretty "Tacky" to me...
ngl I think this actually looks alright. would’ve been better if they cut the edges instead of tearing and maybe added a second or third color but spacing and shape wise, this turned out a lot better than I was expecting
That is awesome idea for a quick party decoration.
Not the worst idea ever
The fact that someone had to make a video to die you how to put tape on your wall is being belief
Life hack: uhhhh...... Put tape on uhhhh your wall!!!
Not terrible tbh
Where can I find their channel? I find myself strangely curious what other decorating ideas these two have.
