🔥 Really cool grasshopper spotted in a backyard in S.E. Michigan.
By - dosangst
It's called a Dactylotum bicolor or Rainbow Grasshopper and they are native to northern Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Super cool find. Glad you shared this.
Thank you for identifying it, it's truly a beautiful creature.
Why dont my grasshoppers look like this... :(
they have not yet adopted slaanesh into their hemocoel
I don't understand those words so it's probably correct.
Lol. Yes, those are certainly words.
I can also confirm as an expert in the field of words that they are not just basic words, but rare and complicated ones as well.
They are perfectly cromulent words that I would enjoy etching with my frindle. Only an absolute frood could grok their true essence, though.
To know is universal, to grok divine
I’ve grokked off a multitude of times to this extraordinary display of diction.
As a person who don't speak English very well, this coment is so confusing lol
this is one that you can just let pass by
Cromulent, grok, frindle, and frood are invented words from four different works of fiction.
As person who speaks English extremely well, it is also confusing.
This gave me the best laugh of the evening, and I mean that in a sympathetic I-feel-your-pain sort of way. Humor is, in my experience, one of the most difficult things to understand in a second language, and this particular kind of humor doubly so. I can only imagine how confusing it must have been. So… thank you for that.
Roald Dahl would be proud.
is frindle a real word now like irl
Well nothing is stopping you
The use of cromulent in this context is beautiful. The rest was a little too much sugar in my coffee, but I liked it.
I may be eating at this very moment, but your name made me hungry again.
From Warhammer lore, both from 40k and Age of Sigmar
Do you know how strong of an urge I had to fight to not say Slaanesh was from DnD just to bait someone.
And here we see an example of Chaotic Neutral.
HEMOCOEL FOR THE HEMOCOEL GOD
Blood for the blood God. Skulls for the Skull Throne.
Milk for the Khorne flakes!
Hemolymph for the hemolymph God. It does not desire the vessel of the sacred liquid.
Can't forget the schleem
I was happy I understood it unlike the other people here and then I realized, should I be happy about that?
Yes. We only live once. Be joyful in your knowledge.
Not sure anyone would understand this, but if that grasshopper starts flirting with you, get the fuck out of there and call an inquisitor.
For the confused: they have not yet adopted **Slaanesh** (a God of chaos and excess in the Warhammer 40k universe) into their **hemocoel** (the body cavity *(coel = chamber/cavity)* of the insect that contains the hemolymph (to oversimplify, a mixture of blood *(heme = blood)*, lymphatic fluid, and other goo that swishes around the insect hemocoel and oxygenates their organs)).
Love, a nerdy person who studied zoology.
To OP: This was a very funny joke! Definitely my brand of humour.
Chaos gods and entomology, this comment slaps
>they have not yet adopted slaanesh into their hemocoel
its on reddit, so it must be true! More slaanesh to the people!
That's how you get virus bombed.
Clearly the inquisition used an expired virus bomb on Wuhan or we'd all be dead.
Grandpappy Nurgle has entered the chat.
Slaanesh? That is very clearly a tyranid.
Being devoured by the *Hive* is inevitable. All surrender before the coming wave of cosmic **DOOM**.
Seriously, the one insect known for developing mindless, all-devouring swarms?! DEFINITELY tyranids
Ignore them I understand you
A man of culture i see
Have you accepted Slaanesh as your personal lord of excess?
What kind of noise do they make?

They haven't spent V bucks to get new skins yet
Blast them with heavy metal and pelt them with little paper balls and they will start to look cooler.
I recommend the app inaturalist for animal ID’s - plus if enough people agree it gets put in a scientific database
FYI: theres a sub called r/whatsthisbug that helps with identifying neat/weird/cool bugs
Amazing photo OP! I remember reading about these a few years ago simply because of how beautiful they are. From memory (too lazy to check at the moment), I recall the reasoning for this colorization is a kind of evolutionary trait developed to warn off predators. Bright colors give them a poisonous vibe, when they are in fact *not* poisonous.
>Amazing photo OP
Not sure if grasshopper understood it was a photo op.
Yes…. Yes, that is beyond upvote-worthy. Take it!
I love the phenotypic plasticity these guys can show too. You can get some really beautiful color combinations.
(Phenotypic plasticity)…….. I like your funny words magic man.
> I like your funny words magic man.
what’s so funny about two scoops
Decades of breakfast cereal marketing made it a little too surreal for Jack Black https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MUKIBfGN7c , https://youtu.be/hJ-7yTBmSs4?t=8
Look at this guy, he doesn't even know about the two scoops
I bet he can’t use the 3 seashells either
Toilet paper…? What do you mean ?
... Kellogg's Raisin Bran? ^^I ^^have ^^no ^^idea
Phenotypic - physical or measurable differences that are genetic expressions. Can range anywhere from color of eyes, to the rate a plant grows, or the attitude of a fish.
Plasticity - the variation within the individual or species.
Basically this person is saying their physical coloration differs wildly from grasshopper to grasshopper.
Genetic Fish Attitude, new band name, I call it.
>physical or measurable differences that are genetic expressions
Phenotypes are a bit more complicated than that - they're essentially just the observed characteristics as they are. Identical twins have the same genes, but different phenotypes. Genotypes are like the light source, and phenotypes are the projected image, but there are things that interfere with the path between those two (Like lenses) that means there isn't a 1-to-1 translation.
>differs wildly from grasshopper to grasshopper
If I understand grasshoppers correctly then it's even more extreme than this - the same grasshopper can have wildly different phenotypes in response to specific stimulation. Locusts and grasshoppers for example are the same actual creature, but a grasshopper becomes a locust (And changes its phenotype) in response to how crowded and resource scarce the area it is in becomes.
There is an awesome app called iNaturalist where you can upload your pic. It uses machine learning to try and identify the animal or plant. It gives you pix of recommendations to compare. You make a suggested match, and post for the crowd to agree or suggest something else. If others agree it is used to improve the algorithm. There are professional researchers who can then use the data to study the species geographically.
Upvotes for this. INaturalist is fucking amazing. Probably hands down the best app I’ve ever found. I’m up to over a thousand species found. It’s like a scavenger hunt and a puzzle with identifying.
We finally have a real Pokedex!
Which is better, iNaturalist or Seek by iNaturalist?
iNaturalist is my favorite. Seek is cool because you can scan in real time with your phone camera, but it isn’t as accurate. It does have fun challenges and awards—great for kids!
One of things you look at and immediately think Mexico!
Odd, I immediately think hallucination.
Weird, I hear Mexico and immediately think Hallucination
Actually, this grasshopper occurs in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. Had it been beige, wearing bifocals, and appologizing for snacking on someone's lawn, I would look at this thing and think, 'Canada'.
We really need to work on our national image, and not a hockey tournament in sight.
I usually think yum mixed berry flavor
Dia de los muertos
Dia de Los muertos hopper
I wonder if these guys had any influence on the color schemes Mexican people use for certain festivals.
I was thinking... District 9
FUCKing PrAWns mate dey eat catfood
Dactylotum bicolor, also known as the rainbow grasshopper, painted grasshopper, or the barber pole grasshopper, is a species of grasshopper in the family Acrididae. It is native to the United States, Canada and northern Mexico and exhibits aposematism.
Had to look them up to see if the colors are indicating they are poisonous but appears to be a faux poison signal and not poisonous.
I love that it is "bicolor" and has way more than 2 colors
The grasshoppers benefit from looking like they’re poisonous, but do poisonous creatures suffer from other creatures stealing their warning signal? Seems like it would go both ways…
I wonder what ratio of real-poisonous species to faux-poisonous species an environment can sustain. Like if everything was brightly colored, it’d stop serving as a warning and the actually poisonous creatures wouldn’t benefit because there’s no point in killing the thing that ate you if you’re still dead.
It’s like, faux poisonous coloring only works if you’re the only one who’s doing it. But everyone is incentivized to try it, which ruins it for everyone involved right? Isn’t this a prisoners dilemma?
Any game theorists want to humor me here?
I was going to say that it looked Mexican.
I drew that conclusion on its colour scheme 😀
Of course it's Mexican, it's an alebrije!
😀😃I am in England and I have not seen anything so beautiful as this, or in Mexican colours
Oh hey, me too. :D
As an English person I can't look at anything more colourful than a feral pigeon for long lest I faint from overstimulation.
I'm definitely getting a Mexican vibe on this. The colors.
That’s beautiful; I’ve always thought the illustratively patterned insect crafts of Mexico we’re creative license, this is incredible.
Doesn't look like it should be in Michigan though. Pic from inaturalist.
I'm seeing bugs in Central Indiana the last few years that I've never seen before. Everything thing moves to follow the food, so I'm assuming they're branching out to new territory.
That map is individual, up to date identifications. It would take many years to migrate out of its current habitat and would've been seen long before it hit Michigan, more likely it hitched a ride on some shipment.
But that's why I like bugs, the diversity is mind boggling. I've been interested in them for years and see new ones all the time. Check out the inaturalist app, it uses ai to help you identify insects from pictures. Once you id it, you can see all the other id's in your area to see how rare/common it is. Most likely those bugs you've never seen before have lived there your whole life.
Yeah, I was scared of these for some reason when I was a kid in Mexico. Some were bright red others were a deep blue.
The hottest thing I’ve read on Reddit
Thank god for nerds. Now I know what this grasshopper is. 😂😂😂
I was gonna say it looks like a Canadian who just went on vacation to Mexico for Día de Muertos.
How did it get to MI?
MI is in the united states where this species is also native too
Premium skin lookin’ ass
No doubt he paid for that one

I wonder if they are from the same DLC
no i believe those were the Razer-exclusive ones
“Grasstly” bundle, comes with a green and black demon/ghost charm, unrelated weapon sticker and an animated weed calling card and emblem.
That's the first form of cell from DBZ
That's the rare 90's Grasshopper, he was a guest host on The Amanda Show I'm pretty sure.
Bro I found that grasshopper as a kid and thought I had discovered a new species, gave it to a buddies dad who was a etymologist. He took it to his office for a few days and identified it xD as a known species.
Not to be pedantic, but *entomologist
"This creature is called a grasshopper because it 'hops' through 'grass'. Both words are of Germanic origin coming to us through Old English"
He’s very fancy.
He's a fancy little gentleman!
Just needs a top hat and cane.
"Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal!"
Ironically, the singing frog from the Looney Tunes cartoons was called Michigan J. Frog.
Maybe it's not irony. Maybe we have stumbled on to some deeper conspiracy. Fancy bugs and fancy singing frogs...all somehow related to Michigan.
I know this guy a grasshopper but I'd like to direct your attention to r/realbeesfaketophats
Ha. I love silly subreddits. I liked the ones with the colorful top hats. This should be universal for insects. All could look great in top hats.
He bought the pay to win skin from the microtransaction shop
He's so fancy.
He already know.
He's in the fast lane.
From Mexico City to Ontario
Oop, little red flag. Somthins telling me I probably should not eat this.
Also you should watch out if you are camping where these things live. They are known to eat a wide variety of things, and they have quite strong jaws. In the wild they often eat tough woody shrubs, so their jaws are easily capable of chewing through wood. They also are frequently attracted to salt sources, as those are not so common in the wild, at least where I was in southern Arizona. Suffice to say if you go to urinate while camping, all of the ones in the area will furiously come to find out the source of the salt. If you are not fast enough, they WILL attempt to chew into your urethra and WILL cause substantial damage that will require you to get medical help. Even worse, if you are like me and put your pants around your ankles while you pee you will probably be helpless as you trip and fall while running away.
Lol what the fuck
What the fuck
That shit escalated 🤣im dead lmao
I don't believe you, but I enjoyed the story.
Very true my friend. I was witness to it. I happened to be crossing border and was in south Arizona when I saw a Yankee peeing and tripping with his pants around his ankles. He was screaming but i could not understand what he said since I do not speak English.
Sorry if any mistakes. I am using Google Translator.
God damn that's about the hardest I've ever laughed at a Reddit comment
grasshoppers: the dreaded [candiru of the desert!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candiru_(fish\))
Gotta hang the pants on a branch, pro strats
What kind of grown man drops his pants to pee?
Drunk guy in the woods
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 235,062,520 comments, and only 54,705 of them were in alphabetical order.
absolutely bananas coincidence demonstrated everyday
Would you look at that. All the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 4 comments and only 3 of them were in alphabetical order.
But can everyone fully manipulate sentences this way?
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 235,473,976 comments, and only 54,797 of them were in alphabetical order.
Ha I’m gonna show this to people who laugh at me for being afraid of grasshopers/locusts. Terrifying creatures.
There’s a movie where this lady breeds locust and she feeds them her blood. I can’t touch my geckos crickets now
The Swarm, a not bad French creature feature! On Netflix if anyone is curious
Uh, your perspiration is going to be saltier than your urine.
I was waiting for the:
> in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.
Thank you for your sacrifice lol
Meh, they have urination cups for clamshells I should be gucci. Now those Candiru of the Amazon are the ones to worry about. They can swim up your pee hole and have backward facing fins/spines so trying to pull it out back the way it came, not pretty.
I read you get these on Amazon, not in the Amazon. I was thinking ‘damn, Bezos is into freaking everything!’
So that’s why the workers pee in bottles?
Lose the pants, take the cannoli.
WTF? I hope I've stumbled into a "What are some fake facts that sound true" part of the thread.
Instructions unclear, dick bitten in half
Grasshopper just got back from Burning Man!
He was hanging out with hypnotoad.
I was about to say, he looks like he's ready for a rave haha
Whatever you do..don’t eat it
El Chapulin Colorado!
Why not ? Now I kinda wanna eat it
In nature, pretty colors usually mean “I’m extremely poisonous”. In this case, the colors serve as a warning that they’re distasteful. Lizards and birds tend to not like to eat them.
Yeah, these guys wear socks with sandals and will leave a party without saying goodbye.

No worries there.
S.E. Michigan? Monroe?
No, Detroit Metro area.
I'm from the same area. Southgate. Where abouts? I've never seen anything like this, very cool!
Also in S.E. Michigan, only boring green grasshoppers here.
So we have narrowed it down to the 3 counties. Northern Oakland would be my guess but I've seen some stuff in my neighborhood over in R.O. area.
You’re in RO? Go have a lamb/chicken rice platter from Detroit Eatery for me - one of the best places up there imo
I'm in Bay City and have never seen anything like this either. So cool!
Where! I must know! A county, at least, plzzzz. They're fixing to send Rob Wolchek to your house.
I’m also curious! I’m up by Oakland University
"Bravo Six, going groovy".
Very cool... Saw a purple grasshopper on one of my outdoor cannabis plants last week. Wish I had my phone on me to snap a pic, but alas. Who knew grasshoppers had such a palette of colors? Great pic, btw!
That would have been a great shot. A lovely insect on a lovely plant ;)
Very cool! Looks like it could be a Transformer or other Alien technology
They’re already here
He jumped straight outta the 80’s.
That's a party cricket right there.
From the Midwest and never seen one like this one. All I've encountered are the big mean green ones that try to bite, then spit tobacco juice on you.
HOW MANY LOOT BOXES DID YOU HAVE TO OPEN BEFORE YOU FINALLY GOT THAT SKIN?!?!
It looks like a legendary Pokémon. Super cool
at first glance thought it was a fishing lure
Id love to see it with a 100x times magnifying microscope
That’s a alien
Gorgeous! I have never seen one like this.
I always loved that weird herringbone pattern on their legs.
When the insects eat the shrooms.
That’s an alebrije
It's not S.E. Michigan, it's AZ. My mom sent me the pic from AZ. I live in SE Mich, and posted it to FB. It might be cool if it was in Michigan
