"Bhayya thoda pyaas dalo" This isn't telugu but you'll need it in hyderabad
na hindi even worse than telugu... kitne bhayya? nehi! that's it...
Lol same. I know thoda, kitna, baat, kuch, hogaya and nahi and use them interchangeably until something strikes a chord somewhere or the other person pities my Hindi.
i know ek do teen char and behen chode 😉
Is behen chode supposed to be step sister or something?
It's my husband's favorite expletive in hindi - sister f***er
Ahh I’ve heard the regular mother version of that one. This is. The first time I’m hearing the sister version
If you’re a cricket fan, you must have heard oh Kohli’s infamous Ben “ben chod” Stokes!!
What does that mean? My Hindi is poor.

But if the person says anything more than akkada, kudi, edama I'm not gonna get it.
I'm reading your Telugu words in the same accent as Americans speak telugu..smh..
I was reading the words normally but the moment I read your comment, I started reading them in the accent as well.

Akkada kuda mana domination e antava?
Adhi kuda correct aey kadha sir!
Edison ki oka few years back vellanu. Mottham mana vaalle. Indians, usually Telugu, and some Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans. Maa relatives house vunna street lo 9/10 families were Indian.
I guess most of the people here want to move to NYC but it isn't as simple as it sounds, haha. And coming to the Telugu teacher thingy, I don't think you need to stress it out. It's really flattering that you wanna learn Telugu, but I guess it happens with daily interactions slowly. Maybe watch some movies with English subtitles for starters, constantly nag your partner asking him to explain what this or the other word means. That'll be super cute actually, haha.
In case you've got no friends in Hyderabad, people staying here can actually meet you in case you're comfy with that.

Do you want to learn Telugu before coming to India or after?
If after coming to india. A fine bet is to Consult a local telugu teacher who teaches in a decent school/College. They're usually very sweet and kind especially the older generation women teaching telugu and will be glad to help a foreigner trying to learn the language. My Telugu teacher back in school was the kindest soul I've ever seen in my life.
Either this or get into a culture exchange kind of thing where 2 persons from different cultures and languages share stuff through Video calls.
Nenu telugu nerchkuntunanu since 4 years... this will be my 4th visit. 2 visits of only 3 weks and last year I was here for 3 months. But locked down mainly because of pandemic, and everyone I met speaks English except for my attamma. So then when we are in my family's house, I just sort of stay out of the way while my husband gets his special time with his parents.
Don't think about "stay out of the way". Your in laws clearly love you. The people speak in English with you because it's your language and you're yet to learn Telugu. They don't want to make you feel uncomfortable by speaking in telugu.
Everyone loves a social and a mingling person here in the telugu states, more so if you're a foreigner trying to learn the language and culture.
My uncle's Friend's wife is an American as well and she learned telugu by speaking telugu with her in laws and relatives irrespective of how many mistakes she's making in sentence formation and grammar but that's how she got the expertise. She didn't fear speaking it wrong and persevered by speaking it daily even if she's in USA. Now she speaks pitch perfect telugu.
Just try and do it. Everyone will be helpful in the process.
I should elaborate, I definitely interact with everyone and I have a good emotional understanding with my mother in law. But when people are having important or deep discussions I stay out of it so not to break the tone.
Yeah, If she said "koncham koncham telugu vachu" I would've believed her

My high school Telugu teacher, Karunakar sir, was awesome. Not only an amazing teacher, he was a good man at heart and would listen to his student’s woes and support and encourage them.
Akka start watching telugu movies with subtitles and telugu news on youtube. You will pick up the slang and enunciations. Keep google translate nearby. Listening and practicing is all i can tell you now. There are many learn telugu in 30 days books available online i believe, but they depend a lot on your dedication.
Try youtube channels like https://youtu.be/nlg5GTBg_1E
Practice and watch telugu classic movies and serials(drama shows) to pick up stuff.
All the best on your endeavor. Also from an economic point of view NYC makes no sense to live in for most telugu software abbayis and ammailu. Ask yourself how many software companies are there in NYC? West Coast forever!!!
Oh gosh I think I've seen every Mahesh Babu and Allu Arjun movie there is, (definitely seen the ramulo ramula movie at least 3 times) and many other bitch slapping and range rover/machete action scenes!
I can tell instantly when the language is Telugu and even the difference between TS and AP accents but the multisyllablic words all just run into each other for me....
Ok, that means you are in an advanced stage of recognizing the language. All you need now is the cognition skills and the ability to put thoughts into words. Part 2 of your Telugu learning journey is you need to start watching telugu movies without subtitles now, try watching the ramulo ramula movie without subtitles and you should be able to make out the meaning of the dialogues and try the same with some other movie which you haven't watched to see how far you can understand it without subtitles. Think of every interaction with your in laws as a movie without subtitles. As long as you are able to understand which word means what in what tone you are on the right track. That's the goal of understanding any new language - communication. In general with any community, if you are able to communicate in a few chaste words of their language with them, they would be more than impressed.
Try your luck visiting venkateswara swamy temple in bridgewater township, NJ.
All the best
There's temples in NJ!! Mamulu domination kaadu idhi
100% already been there!
No where close to being a teacher or in NYC. But if you need someone to talk n chat to improve your Telugu, you can dm me. FYI : I’m a west coast guy
Nenu Manchu Lakshmini recommend chesthanu. As a fellow American, avida nee badhalanu ardhamchesukoni, manchiga nerpinchagalaru
Thanks??? Really?? Lol
Really? You gonna hire manchu akka to learn telugu?
why not? 😉
She gonna teach you telugu [this way](https://youtu.be/eGEDyoM3NNA) 😂
Thanks mawa.. podhune refreshing
Best bet to meet telugu people will be in NJ. I can think of bridgewater balaji temple as one place where you will see telugu peeps . Apart from that I know jersey city and NJIT has decent telugu community and short commute from Manhattan.

I had to google translate this to understand. I showed my proficiency above as a baseline for how little I know - not zero but still horrible!
Problem with Jersey is, it's so car-centric and Edison is like 2-3 hours train journey for me. It's almost easier to go to hyd...
True . Try to attend Indian cultural events close to you along with your family and socialize every now and then. They are fun and you might meet some telugu peeps.
Yes, unfortunately we are missing durga puja and diwali this year but we will be there for sankranti. And my in laws are planning a vow renewal this year so I'll finally attend a wedding where I wasn't the bride...
Shashti poorthi.. షష్టి పూర్తి am i right?
I read this in American accent. Lol. Anyways I think youtube, movies with subtitles etc should help. U don't really need to hire anyone. Besides there are apps for free like duolingo etc. For me movies have been of great help in understanding other languages.
Please reread in a New England accent.
I downloaded Mango Languages (just like duolingo) and the mangoes spoke with a thick andhra accent and my husband said it wouldn't be useful for talking to aunties in the village.
And yeah, I am probably undervaluing what I am learning from movies and stuff. Keep giving it more chances.
Telugu teachers in NYC or Hyderabad?
I was looking for Hyd, since we plan to arrive around first week November. In person teaching works best for me, but if I clicked with the right teacher when I am there I would try to maintain the relationship through video after going back to US.
Video call ki edaithe endi bhayya. Kani Sus

Try silicon andhra manbadi. They have teachers. We do send our kids there ( Saturday classes) to learn some Telugu words. See if there are some. You can get teacher (1:1) also.
Also there is Facebook group called us-india tutors hub. Post there.. some folks will give demo class , so that you can proceed if you like.
They're awful for adults learners. I know from experience. Completely inflexible.
Hey op! I don’t have anyone in particular in mind right now but what I can say you will find one very easily! Telugu people love it when people of different culture seem to take interest in telugu culture and will be very enthusiastic in teaching.
Also you seem to already have basic understanding of Telugu and its grammar which is very impressive as it’s very different from the Germanic language tree. Keep the same interest and hope you have great experience learning!
>!you probably kinda understand the memes here. So we expect shitposts from you here soon 😆!<
i am here for only one thing and that is shitposts. and biryani recommendations, naturally
Might I suggest the app Clubhouse?!
Edit: there are Telugu clubs over there that keep staring rooms for casual chitchat, "Telugu tribe" is one of them, but you can search and find others. It'll help get that practice with speaking and listening, which is really needed for fluency and proficiency.
Let me remind you about అభాతెమాస ?
Sure I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion.
From NJ, I couldn't find anyone local or while I lived in NYC who would teach me the way I learn language. I became fluent in Spanish so I know what works for me. I have some great teachers via Skype from Hyderabad. DM me.
Your mother in law can be your perfect teacher

Why don’t you ask your husband to teach Telugu and converse with him only in Telugu? Even if you hire a teacher, I don’t think the teacher will teach you more than the Telugu conversations you have with your husband. Just my thought

I'm very curious to know what baiting you suspect me of?
Your Telugu in the last para was decent enough, and oddly looked like someone who had good skills was trolling. I am stll honestly doubtful if you are trolling us.
She mentioned that she has been learning from 4 years. Aa mathram untadhi le
I've practiced and practiced the few telugu phrases I know, but my listening comprehension is terrible. Plus I lose my words when I feel like it's important, so I can easily chitty chatty with the tiffin wallas but fail to have a meaningful conversation with my inlaws.
Check Johnny Harris video on how to pick a new language. Apparently you only need 250-500 words to carry a basic conversation. Then figure out what that list is for Telugu and go from there. I speak 5 languages and picking up Spanish (or Chinese??) now.
I feel that bro, I can barely speak telugu
