How to build a perimeter wall on a large colony?
By - Artist_mugi
Well first you place the wall blueprint outside of your main colony buildings.
well, yeah, that's a given, I was moreso wondering about how big i should make it, and how to build it so the raiders wont just target the wall and instead go around it.
In a serious note,
For size, that depends on how big you want your colony to be and how much you want to risk having outside vs how much you care to have inside.
That being said, take the following into consideration.
-Standard- raiders follow a very specific pathing logic. Where they gather for the attack, and the shortest path of least resistance to your base/nearest colonist/structure. They generally ignore walls unless there is no other path. The most popular method is the 'maze' entrance. You wall your entire perimeter and use doors for colonist entry/exit. Raiders ignore doors unless there is no other path and they are the path of least resistance. Then you leave one gap open, or use a door set to hold open and build a long 1 block wide maze that zigzags about and eventually opens up into a prepared defensive position/killbox. Your standard Raiders will always go for the maze and into your killbox even if they're "cautious and will avoid your turrets and traps" because they only have one route in and they aren't being told to break walls like sappers.
Sappers/termite mechs obviously will ignore this and just bust your walls. Make them double/triple thick and you can buy time to prepare a mobile defense which is your best options for those two.
Sieges of course will ignore it, until you remove the mortars. They will the go normal raider and charge the killbox.
Drop pod raids, you'll need a mobile defense for these usually because they like to land inside the walls, especially if you make it really huge.
Manhunters will charge the killbox, infestations, unless they find a spot inside, can be baited to the killbox. Mech clusters, it will depend where it lands and what it has for offense.
Sorry for the wall of text, but all of that is taken into consideration for an open plain defensive wall. Gotta have room for defensive positions as well as your normal buildings/pastures/farms and so on. And you gotta know if you want a killbox or not.
>Ah thanks, I didnt know about the different enemy types.
>The first mechanoids i encountered were literally less than an hour ago, I decided to see what was in the ancient shrine, it's apparently 4 or 5 cryosleep chambers, 11 luciferium, a lancer, and a scyther. i've begun trapping the soon to be entrance, since i was gonna turn that spot into my prison.
>I'm at 12 colonists rn, so I doubt i'll be keeping any of em, and I'm not a psycho so no organ harvesting lmao, i make enough from animals.
Yup. You'll learn the different types with time.
Pay close attention to the alert messages for each raid, it will tell you what type it is and if they are gathering first or attacking immediately.
I love this response. We all behave differently. I stopped putting a lot of work into it. Two tile thick walls? Termites will crack both with a single shot so I space them apart so they at least have to shoot twice.
Plus, it seems it's easier to let them bust in and then melee trap them. The termites can do a lot of damage before going down, so just putting your walls far enough they have to enter through the hole they made makes for an effective ambush.
Layers of walls three squares apart are also useful for delaying and redirecting raiders. I use wood and roofs for this, cheap, fast and easy, occasional stone breaks and doors.
Or use unpowered turrets to add path cost to raiders that want to take the walls down and leave a defended area without turret cover to bait the raiders to that spot
I'll just add that to defeat sapper raids/tunnelers, one tactic is to have another wall inside the perimeter wall with a gap of 2-3 tiles.
The challenge with sappers/tunnelers is that it is difficult to predict where they will start digging from, so the inner wall forms a 2nd chokepoint once they break through the outer wall. Raiders come in through the hole in the outer wall, only to get sandwiched between the 2 walls.
I feel like it'd be more reasonable to go to each raider base and raze it to the ground, like they aint gonna stand much of a chance against me when they've got clubs and revolvers while i have assault rifles
The other hostile factions won't just be tribals.
You're gonna have industrial and spacer level enemies too. If you have mod factions that'll expand even further. Also don't be so caught up in fighting their camps that you forget your own base because some enemies don't necessarily come from them. Events can ignore that at times.
Slave stonecutters working 18 hour days
So, I've got this colony. It's my first, and I'm in fairly mid game without any defenses, ofc on easy difficulty though.
I was wondering how I would build a perimeter wall, as my base has gotten so spread out that it would take about 2-3k of stone just to make a basic 1 layer wall around everything with enough space to grow stuff and keep room for base expansion...
I would really recommend building at least one wall layer- and probably two for endgame and higher difficulty. Easiest way if there is not much stone around is to research deep drilling, set up a drill and a stonecutters workshop near it and churn out blocks. You will get your walls in no time.
I use cheap materials, and build two walls spaced two tiles apart, then roof it off. A perimeter wall will take quite a lot of time to build in both construction costs and materials so the best advice I have is start now and add to it over time. Planning the whole thing out at once is likely going to be a drain on resources and time you don't want to spend.
Concentric circles, each with a gap between it. Walls separate each circle into segments.
Someone breaks through a layer, theres a group of your guys on the other side of the wall to greet him.
Its a killing field. Get through the outer wall and find yourself trapped in the inner courtyard.
Doors between the courtyards allow your guys to figgt and fall back. Set them to hold open so you can quickly leave, close them behind the last guy.
Question what is that shelving mod???
With stone? What kind of question is this.
