> They'll be deployed from Friday evening through Sunday I haven’t seen a cop after midnight on Wash ave, and that’s when the trouble begins

horsepunch9898

The real good trouble.

thefoolofemmaus

> Cultural events, she said, will help rebuild the perception of safety and encourage visitors to return. > “I see an idle downtown as a troublemakers’ paradise,” Jones said. I super dig this response. Kill two birds with one stone.

daGOAT_SMOKEHEAVY

Glad Ms. Jones is taking action. DTSTL has a horrible rep and it’s getting worse. If the city/region wants to grow they have to focus on downtown first.

bananabunnythesecond

Police alone won’t fix downtown. It’s a catch 22, you need people living and working downtown to make it safer. To attract people downtown you need to make it safer. It will take a lot of time, money and effort, having police “patrol” will defiantly help, but won’t fix it over night.

schmuloppey

> you need people living and working downtown to make it safer. To attract people downtown you need to make it safer ^ this Being scared actually causes more crime when people flee. But this is definitely probably a step in the right direction, if it's executed competently.

wrenwood2018

It isn't the solution alone but it is a good first one. You have to make people feel safe before they will consider living there. Cracking down on places like Reign is another good recent move.

wrenwood2018

Yeah I think she was the wrong choice, but I'm glad she is doing SOMETHING. Hopefully it pans out and she just doesn't start calling everyone who points out the issues with downtown racists.

Fighter_spirit

A lot of mentioning of the drag racing downtown in the article. Here's my idea: The city already has a lot of the road downtown torn up to reach underground infrastructure. Use the opportunity to install fast deploy bollards in the road that automatically deploy if someone runs a red over a certain speedlimit. Stops the car. Stops the driver from ever doing it again. Requires no police presence. Only person harmed is the idiot dumb enough to do it in the first place. I am of course mostly joking, but holy shit do I have zero remorse for these shitheads doing this crap in the first place, on top of bringing it out of their neighborhood.

RedNero-007

It's just such a hassle to clean all remains after a high speed collision like that. Maybe red light cameras? So they can pay for the drag races.

HideyoshiJP

I see Schnucks has those automated floor sweepers now. Maybe somebody makes a street sized version to shove the wreck off the road. Damn, that just sounds like automated hell, now that I'm picturing this.

RedNero-007

Sounds like Cyberpunk 2077.

baslisks

Nah, some lawyer in the county got those ruled out. No redlight cameras in st louis.

makinithappen69

They were predatory and mostly benefiting a 3rd party company who were misleading people into thinking they were official government fines when they weren't. Screw that. Good riddance to those.

wrenwood2018

I'm glad she is doing something. Downtown has been heading the wrong way the last couple of years. The crime and violence is a detriment to the whole area.

goharvorgohome

That is a wonderful idea I hope that it can enter the public discourse

Benefits_Lapsed

This has always been a pet issue of mine too, and I had the same thought when I read the article. Really, adding officers to enforce the park curfew, of all things? It just seems crazy that people aren't allowed to go to a public park at whatever time of night they want. On the other hand, there are a lot of things that are crazy about the current state of things, and currently we may not be able to afford the officers right now that would be needed to keep people safe there at night.

schmuloppey

Yes, closing the parks (or anything really) at night is a dick move that harms law-abiding civilians like myself --- and when we flee, crime gets worse. Criminals will be there whether it's open or not.

ChaoticGemini

Agree, I miss going to downtown parks at night. I have not gone in the last two years because of COVID and crime. I thought about it many nights over this past summer.

therealtruthaboutme

Good luck to her, hope it works

horsepunch9898

Defund lol.

curmudg

We have a lovely alt right page you might like.

yodyos

Thinks defunding police could be a bad idea = alt right... Yeah ok

curmudg

Exactly

horsepunch9898

Nevarrrr

Dudestl1

And the breaking of campaign promises begins. Just another ol politician, I kinda wish Cara had won. I definitely can't say I'm surprised tho, after all we knew she was a money lover from her past history (paid trips, parking debacles, sending kids to private school)

BluAnimal

Which campaign promise is she breaking here and why are you upset with it?

Dudestl1

Defund the police and fund social services, not sweep unhouse encampments. Work with community partners to tackle issues.

imdirtydan1997

You cannot fund social services and other promises she made without an influx of tax dollars. Downtown with it’s bars and attractions is vital to getting people outside of the city to spend money here. If they don’t feel safe or incentivized to go downtown, then the whole city suffers.

Benefits_Lapsed

This was Tishaura's response to how she defined "defund the police" [https://youtu.be/sFgXc5wrkvA?t=2304](https://youtu.be/sFgXc5wrkvA?t=2304) >"It's about deploying the right professional to the right call" She never meant it in an "abolish the police" sense and moving around officers or even adding new ones doesn't contradict what she said.

Careless-Degree

It’s so helpful political to use slogans that don’t have actual meaning.

evilyou

The PATRIOT Act says hello, so does No Child Left Behind.

brownnotbraun

And how exactly is social services supposed to help with the downtown violent crime issue in the near term? (And not decades down the road)

Dudestl1

Open up opportunities for teens to do something, basketball, late night swimming, block parties. The main point of the approach of social services is asking why the behavior is happening and working backwards.

daGOAT_SMOKEHEAVY

Yeah but you have to account for the mindstate of the people doing the shooting and most of them could care less about anything that doesn’t involve women, drugs, and pretending like you got money. Education is the key.

Dudestl1

You can't reach them to educate them if you don't create something they are interested in.

A_CrispyOne

Let me stop my crime spree and put down the gun because I'm going swimming!

Dude_man79

Can't bust off some rounds when I'm doing a backstroke

Dudestl1

Exactly how it works!

A_CrispyOne

Yep! I bet all the non-children commiting these crimes just need a place to play. This will surely resolve this metro wide issue

SNIJYM

I also want these things and believe they can be a future crime deterrent. The lack of basketball courts is abhorrent. But we also need to address current realities. That will not stop those already embedded in a life of crime. If someone is presently funding their lifestyle from crime, how do you suppose these activities change that established neuro pathway ending in fulfillment?

horsepunch9898

You mean homeless tent farms?

imdirtydan1997

Try to get an NBA team in the Enterprise Center. Offer up a decent portion of the $500m covid relief funds as an incentive to teams looking to relocate or as an expansion effort. Every league other than the NHL will be expanding in the next five years. Without the NFL here, STL is a prime midsized market for a league that doesn’t like a whole lot of competition in their markets. This brings 36 games to downtown each year. It supports adjacent hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. You have to give people a reason to come here and spend money if you want it to improve and this is just one of many ways.

archangelmlg

I'm pretty sure that's not what those funds are intended for.

imdirtydan1997

I think it can be used to improve the city. An NBA team would probably create quite a few jobs. Just an idea.

horsepunch9898

As if the city would do right by the taxpayer.

wrenwood2018

That definitely violates the guidelines for how those funds have be used.

Blaxo233

Uhh hate to say it but the NBA would not work here because outside of the downtown city of st. louis it is not popular and largely viewed as a 'thug league'.

derekgotloud

This x1000000 , what would the team be called tho?

imdirtydan1997

The St. Louis FuckKroneke’s

andrei_androfski

Please use arch flair

Theodore_Calvin

I thought she promised to get rid of the police? Another dishonest politician. Say it ain’t so.

Hypocrisydenied

Well, actually you're the one being dishonest.

Theodore_Calvin

wat

Hypocrisydenied

You're a liar.

Theodore_Calvin

naw

Hypocrisydenied

There you go again.

Theodore_Calvin

I don’t get it

sharingan10

Ugh
