Taking the day off. What should I do?
By - SewCarrieous
I do love the art museum on Fridays. When I have days off I actually like to hit all the Forest Park museums. You could rent a kayak at the boathouse. Visit the botanical gardens. Go to Shaw Nature Preserve. Rent a bike if you don’t have one and ride the Katy Trail or around Forest Park (also by way of the boathouse). When was the last time you went to the Arch? Find weekday breakfast places and dine there- I did Egg recently.
Thanks! I’d feel a little silly renting a kayak by myself but ima add that to my list of Date ideas if I ever get one. Ha!
Is our egg related to the egg in portland or??
Why silly? Solo kayaking is much more enjoyable than doing it with a partner, imo.
You're thinking of canoeing like on the Little Mermaid. Unless crabs are singing love songs, kayaking by yourself is great.
Oh no, kayaks are wet and messy, not dateworthy. Do those paddleboats on a date. Kayaks are great to just put some headphones in and jam while you investigate all the little nooks and crannies and stare at art hill with the fountains blowing water on you.
Ooooooh I was confused! Maybe I will try that:)
Lamieur sculptor park, botanical garden, lunch and cocktails in Soulard or any of our great restaurants, spend the day in the CWE chess hall of fame etc, grab a scooter around LafayettePark and ride around looking at all the architecture of the homes. In my opinion it’s the most beautiful neighborhood in the Lou.
Art Museum. Get a map & cross out the permanent exhibits you visited; Keep it in the car for next time.
Good idea thanks homie
Go over to Alton/Grafton and go to Pierre Marquette or take a drive down the river road.
This was going to be my suggestion! Whenever I take a weekday off I go hiking at Pierre Marquette, then stop by the Loading Doc!
music exhibit in the history museum
And the blues museum on Washington
Ooooh didn’t know that was a thing
Balloon Glow tonight in Forest Park.
The balloons are setting up now! So you could even go see them before the glow!
Ooh this honestly sounds cooler than seeing them up in the air! Thanks for this!
Thanks for the reminder!! Hampton ave always gets so jacked on this day
Any suggestions for parking nearby? Paid parking is fine
Take a trip to The Hill for some gioias and to see the fountain / walk around down there. Especially on a gorgeous day like today.
I kinda live on the hill or near to it anyway but what fountain are you referring to?? I do want to take the dogs to carondelet park and walk around the fountain …
Oh haha well maybe not then. The marble fountain ⛲️ in front of St. Ambrose!
The Piazza Imo!
Yesss thank you i couldn’t think of the name haha.
No worries! It’s really a great oasis on the hill.
I think gioias is overrated and prefer and recommend almost every other sandwich shop down there
Really? I like it. Others you’d recommend?
They do have huge slices of salami so that can be a turn off.
Everywhere else really, gioas is like the mainstream maroon 5 of sandwiches in the hood.
Off top of my head is vivianos, mama tascanos, adrianas, eovaldies, joe fazzis
But tastes are tastes man I’m meaning no disrespect. I also don’t care for a salami only sandwich
IMO The thing I like about Gioia's is you can add whatever to the sandwich. The other places don't give you the options Gioias does. But you can't get a muffalatta at Gioias!
I do perfer a Mom's Deli (Off Jamison) sandwich though.
Not true, Eovaldis let's folks add or subtract sandwich ingredients too.
I’ll have to try them again. Last time I went (pre-covid) I didn’t remember getting options.
Yeah, we go there like once a month. If you tell them you'd like it to be a little different, they seem happy to do it.
Oh very nice! I’ll try them again
Adriana's is tasty but damn if they're not the least bang for your buck in terms of food quantity/cost. Also, if I go in there one more time and they're still using styrofoam go-cups I think I'll stroke out. But then I'm a nature lover.
Let me know when you're going, because if you stroke out in line ahead of me, that means I get one spot closer to getting my order in!
The way the line moves there sometimes I could theoretically save you 10 or 15 minutes easy!
Haven’t been to Adriana’s in forever. Is she still working the register? Get the Mary with a side of red sauce. So good!
Seconding Eovaldis, my fave place in the hill for a sammich.
Need to go there next week.
I love Gioias for what they do, best hot salami sandwiches around. The Hill is full of great sandwich shops, Joe Fazzi's and Southwest market are both delicious.
How do you even order it? I went and got this and then was like, wait I’m supposed to pick my own toppings? Isn’t there a way that the shop is supposed to think is best? Haha it just didn’t compute for me. I ordered what I thought would work. I was wildly disappointed and haven’t been back.
Hot salami AND beef, on garlic cheese bread, onions, mustard, Mayo - fucking lit. Enough calories for a whole day, but I can eat half at lunch and the other half at dinner so it works out.
Get the Italian trio on garlic bread, you won't be disappointed!
I went downtown to union station and hit The Wheel and it was really cool, tbh. The place itself, with mini golf, the aquarium, etc.. is a fun and strange experience. Like being a tourist in your own city.
Been there and did that except the wheel. I can’t hang with heights
It's a beautiful day. Go walk around the Botanical Gardens and go get lunch at Lona's Lil Eats or Union Loafers.
Alternatively, grab your bike and head out to the Katy Trail in Defiance.
Agreed. Weather's too perfect to spend the day in a museum.
Our hooky Fridays have usually been seeing one of the special exhibits at the Science Center or Art Museum. Then going to one of the local breweries, like UCB or Rockwell for a late lunch.
If you’re up for a hike, you could drive to one of Missouri’s newest state parks(I believe the newest) Don Robinson State Park. Great hikes there
Moms Deli for lunch… I moved to Baltimore last year. I miss it so much :(
It’s the best!
Mom's deli is great but have you tried Le Grand's? So many options too.
Yes. I get my steaks there- or at least I did before going vegetarian
Gotcha, don't have many recomendations for you there. If one of your field trip fridays ever involves the kiddo I suggest the Butterfly House in Chesterfield. They just started letting people release a butterfly on it's first flight for $5. My daughter loved that experience so we did it twice. Then the carousel of course!
Absolutely LOVE Mom's Deli.
I'm digging these suggestions to get lunch somewhere fresh. Helps to know that you're from The Hill.
Botanical garden for a morning walk?
Have you been to a record store lately? It's New Music Friday! I like Euclid in webster, record exchange on hampton, and in spite of all its flaws, Vintage Vinyl on the loop.
Oh man, speaking of the loop: it always has a tourist vibe, which may or may not be your jam. But it also has bubble tea and buskers.
We got some nice coffee for coffee snobs, too. Like Sump, or blueprint. Like, if it's your day off, treat yourself to a mom&pop and something roasted this week.
Live music is picking back up. You should be able to find a patio beer [edit: Or mocktail!] and someone picking jazz / blues / bad 90s covers somewhere.
[e]Just saw that you're not drinking alcohol - we got fancy rootbeer, and several places that make damn good icecream!
Do you creative? Do your creative thing in a public space.
Happy friday, neighbor. :)
Everything I would suggest has been said, but just wanted to say I love everything about this post and I hope you enjoy all your Friday’s coming up. 🙌🏻
Food Truck Friday in Tower Grove Park is super chill. Starts at 4.
Oh shit thank you!! I’ve only been to one this year. Can you remind me how late it goes?
7:30. Also, it turns out, it starts at 3:30.
Oh nice! Maybe I can go before gym then
If you like cats and/or coffee, go to Cheshire Grin Cat Cafe on Cherokee. You can get some good coffee and play with cats for an hour. It’s very therapeutic!
Very allergic to cats but thank you :)
Grant's Farm is starting a Halloween show.
Art Hill is doing the Balloon Lights and Race tonight.
The race is tomorrow, innit?
I read today in a couple sources, and it's listed as a 2 day event in others. The glow is definitely today, tho.
Usually the glow is Friday night and the races Saturday. I live down the street from forest park and can see them from my house ❤️
>I live down the street from forest park and can see them from my house ❤️
You're a lucky bastard and I'm jealous, you know. Forest Park area is so pretty.
It's back at central fields, not art hill.
Get baked and go to Lone Elk.
Take the kid to the zoo! Have you seen the new lemur exhibit? Totally not busy Friday pm as I have done the same. Have fun!
She says no:(. Maybe I’ll
By myself next Friday! Good
Idea thanks :)
Since you're taking multiple Fridays off, maybe head down to the Landing on one of them and go to the wax museum. It's a real hoot, especially if you like horror movies and guessing whether that's supposed to be Woody Allen or Carl Sagan.
Hahaha i should huh? I’ve been past it so many times but never once went in!
I have been multiple times, and I love it.
It’s a beautiful day - enjoy!
Go out for lunch and then take a long walk around Forrest park .
I think the balloon glow is tonight. Can see if anyone is setting up.
If I have a weekday to myself, it usually results in thrifting and visits to vintage stores like Green Shag.
Definitely botanical gardens
Go to Monks Mound and the museum down the street.
I usually like to fish at Forest park or kayaking at Creve Coueur lake
Go biking or hiking
Adriana's on the hill is one of my favorite lunch spots, then art museum or the zoo. Lots to do around Forest Park as well!
St Louis Symphony Orchestra used to do a Friday morning "Coffee and Concert" series...cheap tickets, Q&A with the musicians afterward, etc...not sure if that's still a thing.
Tonight is the opening night of the Greentree festival in Kirkwood
lots of friday events
If you want a new hobby, try climbing! Plenty of gyms in the area no matter where you are.
Not interesting in cutting my finger nails off and callusing up my fingertips. I lift weights 5 nights a week and yoga on Saturdays
I have seen some very hot men into it tho. Can I be a spectator? Lol
Hah! I personally never mind spectators. Though...there is a pattern of spectators getting convinced to climb lol.
Paddle boarding at Creve Coeur lake
The history museum I went recently and the suffrage and music special exhibitions are great if you like learning about real St Louis history
That’s where I went!!
I was in St. Louis last Friday and I really loved the city. I’ll do a post of pictures and things I did in 48 hrs I really enjoyed the city.
Please do! Glad you enjoyed your time here ❤️
Take the most massive poop in a Home Depot!
Hhhahaha no thanks
In the display toilet.
And tell anyone while walking in that you're "about to blow this up"
Doesn't some place in our area have an Oktoberfest this weekend?
I know [St. Charles Oktoberfest](https://saintcharlesoktoberfest.com/) is next weekend.
[Soulard Oktoberfest](http://soulard-oktoberfest.com/) is in three weeks.
But I though I saw someone talk about there being another one in our area this weekend.
UPDATE: It's in [Belleville](https://bellevilleoktoberfest.com/).
I don’t drink tho
Walk around Main Street st Charles, I buy hot sauces and spices from shops out there, fun to walk around during the day and just pop in since it isn’t busy when people are working.
If you wanna stay in St. Louis, Roadcrew is an awesome coffee shop to chill at and City Park Grill up the street has some amazing food I never hear anyone talk about. A true gem.
I always do the Art Museum when I play hooky-makes me feel like Ferris.
Go get a tattoo at All Star Tattoo
Belleville , Octoberfest
Balloon Glow is tonight, though, so get into Forest Park RIGHT NOW.
Hahaha ikr. Hampton will be a parking lot starting now
Go sailing with a friend -- perfect day for it.
Surely you have friends. Who knows, one might even actually own a sailboat!
Yknow I’ve actually been kinda sore I’ve never had a boyfriend with a boat.
There's sailboat racing this Sunday at Creve Coeur Lake. Sometimes folks are looking for crew. Just sayin'.
O rly? 🤔
Yep, they have races like almost every other Sunday. There's one this weekend, in two weeks, and the 24th of October.
