Silent_Shadow05

>That fucking transition. These transitions hit really hard. The director is pretty famous for this. I'd have to keep an eye on his future works.

melindypants

The transitions are downright incredible - when combined with the OST, it always gives me chills at how well it's all executed.

Shimmering-Sky

For sure, that's *the* biggest thing that's stood out to me throughout the entire series. I've actually started immediately thinking of this show whenever I see other crazy good *quick* transitions in other anime, haha.

zairaner

>I was eating lunch while watching this episode. You should never eat while watching 86, you can even end up hating your favorite meal...

icemann17

Can't have shit in 86. We get fido back and then we lose Eugene. Love this anime

bananeeek

I'm positively surprised that Fido is back, but the moment Frederica took a photo of Eugene and Shin, I felt like she set a flag for him.

Fireblast654

Definitely a flag, but he himself set up tons of flags for himself as well :( Since his introduction I kinda felt like it wasn't going to end well for him.

ImJLu

Never talk about your dreams for after the war. Ever.

ThrowCarp

Haha wow. Look at all these fictional characters raising flags for themselves by talking about their postwar plans. Oh by the way after Coronavirus I'm going to visit my cousins in my parent's home country and attend the 100th Comiket.

ManggaAsem

DarkChaplain

My heart, you just broke it.

Dalamy19

One moment he’s smiling and raising death flags, and the next moment he’s lying in a pool of blood asking for his sister. In a series full of incredibly well-executed death scenes, this one does not miss.

KorekaBii

The transition shot of him grabbing the picture locket was just perfect.

Exist50

And how he hesitated, to later show that he cleaned some of the blood off his fingers.

TizzioCaio

but no shit given from the creators, like not even a full second respite for the poor sob

Corregidor

Holy shit this is why I fucking love this show. So much show don't tell. I didn't even notice him wiping the blood from his hands because it's done subtly, but it just adds sooo much to the character. Defines him as stoic but kind. Every other show in this world should be taking some serious notes.

Nexxess

Shit I was still smiling without really realizing what just happened.

Hiroxis

That made me laugh for some reason. It's like they went "Alright y'all already know what's gonna happen so let's get this shit over with shall we?"

iDannyEL

Honestly really glad since it was the most egregious red flag I've seen in a long time.

HammeredWharf

They did a good job speeding it up, because watching him die would've been too predictable. Still, I think easing up on the death flags would've been a good idea. This show isn't known for its subtlety, but still, damn. He raised so many he might've as well said it's his last battle before retirement.

AashyLarry

Yeah I liked that he was killed off somewhat quickly because they made it clear it was gonna happen at some point

Mundology

Also, Eugene died seeing the picture of [his treasured sister.](https://i.imgur.com/mqRIv4f.jpg), next to two of [his best friends](https://i.imgur.com/q7QUnI4.jpg) While still tragic, he got a better parting than many of the Spearhead Squadron members, especially those who agonized priorbecame robozombies. [](#shatteredsaten)

mcrobertx

Idk wtf was that. I felt like i blinked and it went from happy lunch to dying in a pool of blood.

SDdude81

♫ Raise your flag ♪

Loebb

Please don't make me relive those feelings... I just wanted a intro to the mecha genre...

SDdude81

Hah, Iron Blooded Orphans was not the show for that.

Loebb

Tell me about it..i watched gundam a long time ago, and i thought at that time "oh ok, another gundam, i can take a look"... Oh boy, i was not prepared to feel that much for a mecha anime...love it to death tho.

Plerti

That cafeteria scene broke my detector of red flags, such an amount of red flags in that little time should be impossible to archive!

zairaner

He was still talking when they showed the shot of his torn off arm for the firs time, I think this counts as ONE moment.

Mogtaki

Is it bad I let out a "hah" when it showed Eugene's hand? He was just raising all the death flags he possibly could during all of his speeches in the last two episodes I know it's supposed to be sad, but the guy was running out of flag space with how much he was collecting them all The way they showed his death, though...man, that was some good art and directing

Ecstatic-Quiet3027

It's predictable but the way it was executed caught me off guard. Man lost his limbs and the way he talks in dying tone gives me chills. After those peaceful episodes i almost forgot i'm watching the anime that made me depressed

SkullcrobatTheGod

> Man lost his limbs And you dont even realise he lost his limbs until he asks Shin for the picture, and Shin gets up and walks to get it

Mogtaki

Yeah for sure, hence my last sentence there. You knew it was gonna happen and it's not just an arm he lost but every other limb and below the ribs

Ssalari

Well yeah the anime was basically screaming he is going to die, in LN well, it wasn't that obvious but it was also expected.

onyhow

Well it's not obvious in the LN because the sequence of events in the LN isn't quite linear. So by the time you see the death flags for Eugene propping up in the LN, you already knew Eugene's going to die...because you already read about it a chapter before.

Plerti

Specially when we see his hand holding the pendant and he says "the picture please" and Shin is like "Where...? Oh... over ***there***..."

jeffjeffersonthe3rd

In the light novel its in a completely different order, with his death being shown before we get to know him. Hence why the author didn't try to hide the fact that he was going to die in the scenes before he went to war.

magicfades

Welcome back indeed...yep, this episode was definitely the 86 we signed up for.

LMAO frederica is canonically their mascot this is great

AllThingsDragon

Except for the part when if her squad dies, she dies right along with them

royale_op

Yup I naively thought being a mascot was a nice and cute thing for frederica to be until it was talked about more with eugene later on.

Mr_Zaroc

Its like the tradition german tribes had 2000 years ago where their family (wifes and kids) would come to the battlefield and watch them so they would fight harder. Cant lose if you family is in arms reach

Earthborn92

Considering that Giad is NotGermany it makes more sense.

Isn't that just like a football game with higher stakes?

Mr_Zaroc

Ainine9

Oh shit they actually showed Shin making a Vanagandr jump. That was glorious.

AllThingsDragon

I always likened it to making an elephant do a flip: Stupid af, but if you pull it off it's actually really damn impressive

MejaBersihBanget

[Relevant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwwga6t_lBg)

Sandman-AC

The face of Shin before executing the maneuver is hilarious, like he was facepalming internally for the clumsiness of the other Vanagandr.

vivastpauli

Shin just looks like: "Why does this tank not designed to jump not jump when I want it to?"

Silent_Shadow05

I actually faced a bug in the recent beta for Battlefield 2042 where my tank suddenly jumped and did a backflip after hitting a rock lol. Shin's maneuver actually reminded me of that.

vivastpauli

Tfw you try to 360 no scope the Legion with a minivan instead of your normal light tank.

WhoiusBarrel

That orange haired dude then just rants at Shin for doing that. Totally can see him fucking up majorly in the future episodes if his even going to be sticking around which I hope not.

Sandman-AC

I think he didn't liked the idea of Eugene hanging with Shin and he was ready to use any occasion to try to annoy him. Ironically it's usually safer to be near our favorite reaper and he got blamed for not saving him. The guy is emblematic of one of the concept of Eighty Six: people like to use others as a scapegoat because are unable to cope with reality, especially senseless losses.

Se7en_Sinner

That's what 1000 hours in World of Tanks looks like.

Ssalari

Lol yeah, i serioulsy wanted to see it, since it was only mentioned in LN.

Lukexz

Same goes for me, I was really hoping they animated that. A-1 will never fail us

Silent_Shadow05

I like how A-1 adapted [Eugene's death](https://i.imgur.com/51sLYfZ.jpg). It was so abrupt, and the whole scene had no music playing in the background, to remind us that death comes anytime and its not *always* heroic. Its full of silence and dread. Once Shin shot him, only then the music started with *sad piano noises*. You can see that Eugene's death hit Shin *really* hard, even if his *expressions* aren't saying anything, [his eyes do](https://i.imgur.com/yUB128w.jpg). Fido's return and Shin making that Vanagandr jump to hilarious results was two of the best moments in this episode for me!

Manitary

I liked the instant jump from death flag to dead body, no need for the battle.

Rumpel1408

It probably wasn't much of a battle anyway, until Shin got there at least, and it looks like he managed to safe the dickhead so he was just a little bit too late...

sassinos

I just looked on the official website, and oddly enough, Eugene is not classified as DESTROYED. Guess they are doing things differently this time around since this isn't taking place in the Republic. Or it could be just because he is not an 86.

AashyLarry

Yeah his brain being blown out means he can’t be a Legion right? Should be destroyed then…

Dalnore

The "destroyed" label wouldn't make much sense, as the Federation doesn't pretend their mechs are not piloted by actual humans.

dark77638

While im happy af that Fido is active again, Eugene went from happy meal together to sinking in his own blood and drop dead real fast. 0-100 so fast i cant even react Solid episode, probably 6.5-7k this week. Need more Lena pls

Shinkopeshon

I had to do a double take when it happened, I don't think I've ever seen a death scene done quite like this - just unforgivingly abrupt, even the subtitles were still on screen when they showed his hand.

michhoffman

It was very jarring. Like with the death flags, we knew it was happening this episode but still.

arclight909

The transition of Eugene's hand holding the medallion is probably my take away of this episode. They just shove it in your face after hinting his death with the silence of Frederica taking a picture of him and Shin.

Exkuroi

His hand was still holding it despite getting blown metres away

Silent_Shadow05

This show really loves its sudden transitions...

Stegs75

Literally said “oh he’s gonna die” then 1 second later they show his hand lol

Se7en_Sinner

The mascot system really does seem disgusting. Sending little girls alongside a squadron to forcefully build bonds so they'll fight harder to protect them is very manipulative. I'm glad they said it's a dying custom. Cracks in the Giad Federacy are starting to show and maybe it's not as perfect as it first appears.

Silent_Shadow05

Although militaries IRL didn't use little girls (afaik, correct if I'm wrong), but they DID use animals as a mascot for the soldiers to boost morale, or as an emblem of the unit or for ceremonial purposes. [You can read more about it here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_mascot).

JapanPhoenix

> but they DID use animals as a mascot for the soldiers to boost morale *Fido intensifies*

Mogtaki

There was young women too but they weren't part of the army, rather they were young actors and singers that would do the whole 'singing for the army' thing. Vera Lynn, Andrew Sisters and Doris Day were the main girls who were used by the army to boost morale during WW2.

Sandman-AC

The Royal Navy also had a penchant for pets and not just dogs and cats. Some ships had animals more appropriate for a zoo. Fun things: often those pets outranked ensigns. Military bureaucracy knows no boundary.

desterion

The most famous is probably Sam/Oscar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsinkable_Sam Or the Polish Wojtek https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wojtek_(bear) https://i.imgur.com/vw61MpO.png

Naskr

Mascots sometimes were children, but usually very young orphans. Putting them with a military unit meant they were looked after. Mascots might also be abandoned children due to illness, loss of limbs, or being unwanted. Sometimes they would become what are essentially child soldiers. This would be a situational thing based on specific circumstances, though, not a custom.

Mr_Zaroc

IIRC its super old, german tribes 2000 years ago would bring their families with them so they couldnt flee

thelonelyMEMER

Eugene says it's nobody likes doing it and that it's an old custom. Maybe it's a custom of the Giadian Empire before it became the Federacy. There's also the fact that some people *cough cough Marcel* are still weary of the 86. There's also when Eugene said that casualties probably meant less mouths to feed for the higher ups. The usual higher ups don't care about the average soldier. I guess the Federacy is still better than the Republic in many ways though.

Sandman-AC

Yeah, before the Federacy the Empire was the bloodthirsty nation that unleashed Legion in a bid to conquer all the continent. Things like the Mascot system are par for the course for a nation like that. In the current events is just a way for Ernst to have her tag along with them. It may have been relatively easy considering that Nordlicht is an experimental unit with relatively lax rules compared to others. Marcel is not weary of the 86 in a racial sense, because for the Republic he would be a 86 himself. What is weary of is the idea that those 5 are war obsessed monsters and he consider them a menace. In this sense the terms became an umbrella for the so called "monsters created by the Republic". It's actually not uncommon for veterans to suffer from this kind of discrimination, especially those that fought in fierce battlefields. Books like First Blood are entirely based on this concept.

arclight909

That's the good part, when in war nothing is good even with the best intention, and no country is perfect. Utopia is something of a far fetch concept.

timedragon1

I'd say the big difference between the Federacy and the Republic is that most people in the Federacy seem to agree that these traditions are barbaric and are slowly moving away from them while the Republic quintupled down. It shows the difference between a properly advancing society and one that's extremely stuck up with its jingoism.

Sandman-AC

To be fair it was more an excuse for Ernst to have Frederica tagging along with them using a disused custom. They are also in an experimental unit, so it's easier to keep tabs on them. As for the rest Giad is more in line with our modern sensibility, so it has a lot of problems as well.

ThatHappyCamper

Yeah, and I think that's the point. They are obviously better than the Republic, but they have issues that need to be changed. You can't try to make progress if you're already perfect.

vfactor95

> Cracks in the Giad Federacy are starting to show and maybe it's not as perfect as it first appears I mean we kinda knew this from the start when Eugene said he couldn't attend school because he didn't have the money.

thelonelyMEMER

I have a feeling the photo Fredrica took might come up again since we didn't see the Eugene and Shin when she took the photo.

septen

Calling it now, it will be another montage similar to Fido's video log. And we will cry ugly tears.

rugbyweeb

I'm not ready

AashyLarry

Yeah. Maybe it will be given to Nina as a gift. Or maybe Shin will keep it for himself as a memory.

daspaceasians

No way this lasted 25 minutes. I felt like I was watching 3 episodes in 1 with how the story flowed so well. Eugene's death was just brutal and out of the blue. Like a real war, things move quickly with no warning. Really enjoy seeing Giad's military training and R&D scenes. Shows how much more competent they are compared to San Magnolia.

Silent_Shadow05

[I'd like to link in the author's commentary for Episode 1 & 2](https://twitter.com/TheZackZeal/status/1446558059845849090) (translated by the 86 LN translator - TheZackZeal). They contain some extra information which may help anime-onlies know about the world and characters in more detail. For Episode 3 commentary, you might have to wait until the LN translator updates it.

pruvd

It's great to have author and translator so engaged with the community, makes the experience even more fun.

MejaBersihBanget

Yeah, now if only the translator could stop making so many mistakes when translating the light novel. The fan translation was clunkier but had none of the factual errors.

AashyLarry

Like what? If I remember there was a technical mistake on one the guns or ammunitions? Anything else

MejaBersihBanget

1. The ranks for Lena and her uncle are translated using navy rankings instead of army. Lena's uncle is called a "commodore" when he should be a "brigadier general," while Lena's rank after she got demoted was "lieutenant" in the LN but "captain" in the anime. The Lieutenant rank would be correct if she was in the Navy but she's not. 2. The LN said Shin used a 99mm gun to mercy kill Eugene. Yeah right (should be 9mm). 3. One of Frederica's last lines from last episode when she went into "serious mode" was mistranslated in the light novel and ironically enough Crunchyroll's subs were the correct version. [More details from last week's episode discussion thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/q4ot06/86_eightysix_part_2_episode_2_discussion/hg16xx0/) 4. The LN makes constant mistakes with numbers, another example is that it says the events of today's episode take place in 2144 (it's 2149, as the anime clearly shows in its date stamps) There is another serious mistranslation of numbers later but I'll get to that when we get to the episode this season.

[deleted]

>Eugene and Nina... T_T

Sandman-AC

Both Asato and Shirabii are doing a wonderful job enhancing each episode with tweets and illustrations. The latter is actually doing the llustrations in livestream right before each episode.

shirvani28

I knew it was coming but Eugene's death still hurts so bad. Shin looks devastated. He holds so much pain within him...

rynnikelddi

Oof I know I said Eugene was a walking death flag lightning rod last week, but he got killed off in the most nonchalant way possible. In one scene, he and Shin were still happily chatting away in the mess hall when the battle stations siren rang, and then boom, cut to the next scene where he's already fatally wounded (with his arm blown off a few meters away). RIP Eugene, we barely knew you. Shin recovered his Grim Reaper handgun just in time to do his duty again. Still no Lena for the second consecutive episode. :( And in-universe wise, it's been nearly 9 months since they left San Magnolia and last heard Lena's voice. Though next episode's title seems to hint at the reunion? I could be wrong. BTW, where are Shin's friends? Have they been assigned to other theaters in the war? At least he's got his own loli mascot Frederica to constantly cheer him up. And finally: FIDO LIVES! (And good on the Federacy on making a stone tablet to commemorate the fallen 86 from Spear Head, the name list retrieved from the former Fido's remains)

Sandman-AC

They are part of Nordlitch squadron, so they are in the same front. However the frontline is immense and they are probably using the Reiginleif as "fixers" of sort attacking Legion units that are breaking the lines in a mobile defense strategy.

AashyLarry

> In one scene, he and Shin were still happily chatting away in the mess hall when the battle stations siren rang Also, I liked how in the dining hall, Shin got up moments before the alarm rang. I don’t think Giad knows about his ability yet but he’s predicting when the Legion will come before their own lookouts even realize.

Aetherdraw

At the very least, Nordlicht batallion knows, since they seem to be splitting up to efficiently help around various theaters.

sabdeyazdan

When I saw that scene of Frederica taking picture of Shin and Eugene in a very suspicious manner (we didn't see Shin's face, and Frederica told it's a habit in a sad voice), I understood he won't last until the end of the season. I really didn't see that coming though, it was still really sudden and the way it was executed took me completely off guard.

Silent_Shadow05

>In one scene, he and Shin were still happily chatting away in the mess hall when the battle stations siren rang, and then boom, cut to the next scene where he's already fatally wounded (with his arm blown off a few meters away). They wanted to draw parallels to how Kujo died in Cour 1. The atmosphere of both deaths was pretty similar, even down to the transition, from eating with everyone to slowly dying and then Shin dealing the killing blow.

LunarGhost00

> Shin recovered his Grim Reaper handgun just in time to do his duty again. As soon as Shin shot him, it somehow felt nostalgic but in a depressing way. Like a return to normal... and that "normal" just happens to be comrades dying.

SDdude81

It's a return to the norm. Though what's crazy is that this time Shin and the gang are choosing to live this way.

assidragon

They never really had a choice, though. At this point it's the only way they can live - sitting back and just waiting the Legion to win the war would drive them insane.

RedRocket4000

Plus they the Ace pilot type and war is what they do best.

vazman

> BTW, where are Shin's friends? Have they been assigned to other theaters in the war? At least he's got his own loli mascot Frederica to constantly cheer him up. When they were eating in the hall Shin said it's so busy they had to split the squadron up

DeepIndigoSky

When Shin got a 0 for dangerous piloting I wish he had asked, “What would have been the proper course of action in that case?… Sir.“ Fido 2.0!

aac05290

I kind of took dangerous piloting to mean that Shin’s maneuver could be dangerous for the pilot. If that’s true then the proper course of action would be to let two mechs get damaged rather than save a mech but risk personnel injury. It would fit into the theme of the 86’s actions (and their new mechs) showing a general disregard for the operators’ well-being.

A_box_of_Drews

I'll be honest, the return of Fido had me ugly crying. I had to put down my dog this morning after 15 years and seeing Shin's dog return really brought back all of the memories I made with my dog and the fact that I'll never make new ones with her again. I'm not looking for sympathy or hunting for upvotes, but I just needed to mention it to someone

AashyLarry

Damn I’m really sorry for your loss. I think all of the dog owners love Fido even more because we know what he means to them, especially Shin.

A_box_of_Drews

It really struck a chord with me seeing Shin's happiness. Honestly, wish this episode had happened last week instead. Turned very quickly from a happy moment that Fido is still alive to sadness that my dog isn't.

Rarbnif

I love the gravestone they gave to all the fallen comrades

AashyLarry

Yeah and they wrapped everything in a glass enclosure. They really made a real memorial there.

Ssalari

I whish they didn't cut Shin's inner monologue there, though you can see his not really happy expression there.

dagreenman18

There’s the 86 I know! Giving us 2 and a half episodes of happy things and then punting us in the feels balls as hard as it can. Beautiful. At least it was fun for a minute. Shin having his Top Gun moment in the beginning by managing to flip his big ass tank. Shin just manages to be effortlessly cool and even has an Iceman in the redhead guy. The scene after though was the happy tears segment of the episode. The monument to the fallen 86 they made for them was a touching moment, but I actually lost it at Fido being alive. Shin looked legitimately happy for once and I fucking love Fido. I was also joking last week, but now she actually is their mascot in an official role. How adorable and also appropriate for their unit to have her. A cast-off an old regime and a lost soul looking for meaning. Plus gives us more brother-sister time with her and Shin. Then the punting happens. I do appreciate that they wasted zero time making us think Eugene was going to survive after all those death flags. The suddenness and brutality with how they off him in the next scene ripped my heart out in a brilliant way. They were so efficient in getting us to like him and his little sister. Now we know she’ll suffer and her brother will never come home. Even more weight is added when you remember what exactly Frederica’s power is. She saw it coming. That’s why she wanted the picture of them together. Even at the moment she was bonding with him about how Shin is a sourpuss she saw his end. I’m still amazed by how adding a kid sister has actually made the show even better. Looking forward to more crippling depression to come. Let’s see how much sadder it can get Notes - Small character things I like with Frederica are the fact that she's the only one who calls him Shinei, the zeal in which she does her role as a mascot, her bear now has a pocket with even more bear stuff, and how well she flips between her cute brat self and being more serious. - Sadly Eugene drew the Goose card. - Love the symbology of having them continue their mission at the place they were found. Shin gets his gun and Fido back, the 86 that fell before them are honored, and they can finally move forward to the end. - I’m still wary of Giad, but so far they’re not assholes. It’s easy for them to be better than the Republic, but they so far seem like decent people who are at least trying to care about them. It was solid of Ernst to give Shin his gun back. their new commander seems cool. Even random solider on the battlefield was at least trying to be nice, even if it was a bit performative. I’m a little more relaxed. Not saying they’re totally on the up and up, but they’re not as bad as I thought. - I live for the Shin and Frederica sibling moments. Both the cute (like the mushroom scene) and the sad (like telling her to close her eyes before he puts Eugene to rest). Great dynamic.

Sandman-AC

I like the contrast between our perspective and that of Marcel. At the end we know how Shin felt and the sense of loss for his first true friend in the Federacy. Marcel instead just saw a war obsessed monster coldly telling him to write a death report for his friend. Shin (and by a lesser extent the others) are difficult to understand, that's why he harbor animosity toward them. At the same time the population believes that they are victims or heroes returned to the battlefield to protect the great nation that saved them. They are neither. It's fascinating to see how things evolves when you exit from an ideology driven perspective like that of the Republic (a simply exploitative one), to a place with sensibilities more similar to a real life modern nation. You get different interpretations and a lack of understanding that's not necessarily in bad faith. Grethe Wenzel was genuinely surprised that they reacted negatively to the monument for example, and her reaction is probably what i would have as well in her place.

dagreenman18

What you just lined up made something click for me that maybe should have happened earlier: the Federacy is a more specific allegory than I thought. It’s a mix of a few places, but I see a lot of American ideology. Like in those grand gestures and the public assumption that people like the 86 would enlist out of some sort of gratitude. Their reactions are distinctly western. Like Grete’s confusion and Marcels anger. Also just reminded me that the only true friend Shin made in the Federacy is someone who, like him, lost so much because of the Republic. The only person outside of the 86 in this place who knows how they feel. And like all the people he’s known like that, Shin once again has to be the one to put them out of their misery. They really are right back where they left off. Goddamn this show is excellent.

Silent_Shadow05

The author also made Eugene have traits of both Rei and Lena, so it hit even harder for Shin. Shin is not an expressive person and he doesn't want to show it, but he is in a lot of pain now.

assidragon

> Marcel instead just saw a war obsessed monster coldly telling him to write a death report for his friend. Shin (and by a lesser extent the others) are difficult to understand, that's why he harbor animosity toward them. The thing is, Shin *is* slowly becoming a monster down this path. Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but that long silence and deep breathe after the "*are you okay*" really hints that he is not. He's probably more broken and fatalist than before. This death hit him very hard; Eugene was a lot like people he adored (Lena and Shourei), **and** the first friend he knew who had the freedom of choosing to fight. And he got brutally murdered like all the 86 anyway. It only reinforces to him that it doesn't matter that they had survived. San Magnolia or Giad, their reality never really changed; sure they are treated better but it's more or less cosmetic band-aid to them. These people are less racist, that's great! And yet, they too are dying in droves anyway. All they can still do is fight against the Legion until they finally die.

MejaBersihBanget

> Shin having his Top Gun moment in the beginning by managing to flip his big ass tank. Shin just manages to be effortlessly cool and even has an Iceman in the redhead guy. Just needs Shin to romance Lena now with "Take My Breath Away" playing in the background.

assidragon

> Even more weight is added when you remember what exactly Frederica’s power is. She saw it coming. That’s why she wanted the picture of them together. She only sees the past and the present of someone, not their future... she simply wanted Shin and his sole friend recorded together. Keep in mind that she's pretty much hiding undercover all the time, so she very well knows how much it means to have someone you can finally open up to. ...and then she gets to be the one telling Shin about the "*bad news*".

Truthgamer2

3 weeks into the season/cour and this show is already a highlight of my weekends

Shin may be known as the Shinigami, but Death Flags are the true Shinigami.

indrmln

It was nice knowing you in this few episodes, Eugene. RIP

sabdeyazdan

I feel really sad for Shin and others, as they are still "eighty sixers" even though they passed through hell to get here. Shin also lost his first friend in Federacy and the embodiment of Rei/Lena in the most tragic way.

Fuck_Taha_Emre

Nouzen carrying the noob team as alyaws... GG

When you put the lv. 90 veteran in a party full of new players to carry them through the high-level mobs but they always bite the dust anyway.

Sandman-AC

Kudos for the updated timeline. Keep up the good work!

Kyubeu

*I am your mascot* Aww how cute *proceeds to explain what that means* Oh God oh fuck Well, when Eugene started talking about his plans I was certain what will happen. It still does hurt very much. War never changes, especially for Shin, as was shown in this episode. Only bright moments were the memorial and robot doggo Fido being back. Good episode, very good one

redlaWw

Welp, interlude over. We're back.

Cryogenx37

Shin's infamous zero-point failure! And FIDO being alive is probably not much of a surprise, considering the OP itself spoiled that fact (carrying Frederica on top too). And Eugene. Man, that was much more gruesome than what I imagined reading the LNs

UnderstandableXO

the way eugene was talking the whole episode, i knew it couldn’t end well for him. seeing his arm detached from his body and then his brains blown out was disturbing. onlookers are falling back into a cycle of hatred towards the 86 (even though they’re not even different anymore racially!), and shin is falling back into a cycle of war and death even though he has every opportunity to leave. now eugene’s another comrade to carry on his shoulders to the promised land

Lukexz

YES THEY ANIMATED THE VANAGANDR JUMP! Rip Eugene, but that's what you get for talking about the future and your little sister in an anime like Eighty-Six. I already knew what was gonna happen but i think it was obvious even for anime onlies

NittanyEagles55

The piano version of the theme gives me chills Everytime

gammtau234

Not me crying AGAIN. When we met with Fido again the piano was playing the closing song for season 1 and that made me cry even more…and then Eugene died so like non-stop tears over here 🥲

DistantSilver

No flashy death. No in battle scene. Nothing in between. OUR BOY EUGENE LITERALLY DIES IN THE NEXT FUCKING FRAME AFTER SAYING "see you soon"

shirvani28

Damn that was soooooooo good. I don't think I would have changed a thing. Phenomenal. Coming from a LN reader as well. What a great adaptation.

SisterOfBattIe

Shin with his Reiginleif decimating Legion. His unit seems as flimsy as the repubblic one, but at least seems to have better sensors and better engine. It seems an insanely difficult design to pull of in combat. One wrong move and the unit likely has enough momentum to break its own legs. The Giad's soldiers REALLY don't like the new direction of those unit of putting offense above pilot safety.

Sandman-AC

Yeah, the problem of the Reiginleif is that they are so agile that you can kill yourself crashing at high speed. Tech specs indicates that they are actually armored (they are immune to anything that's not the Lowe main cannon) insulated with a NBC sealed cockpit with Gundam style panoramic screen. They are much bigger than a Juggernaut, like you may have noticed when the high frequency blade "decapitated" a Lowe. They don't have a real engine, instead they use electric actuated synthetic muscles (sound fancy, but real life quadruped drones already do that, they are just slow) like the Vanagandr and Legion Drones, but they are much faster, being able of sustained running at 100km/h. Republic Juggernauts are an inferior copy of the Feldreb bodies that Legion uses, but they were not able to replicate the strength of the synthetic muscles, so they cobbled together an hybrid system with hydraulics. The latter generates the noise you heard often in the first season and is one of the main reason of the fragility of the legs.

RedRocket4000

So massively better replacements. But no wonder they killing the non Ace pilots they trying to test with. Need a work up set of training vehicles before new pilot do the real thing. And combat vets only to start.

marcopolos059

Eugene's death flag was obvious but that didn't stop the scene from being gut wrentching... I'm glad Fido is back too.

Dio5000

Episode thoughts: * shin showing off again lol 😆 * commander don't know shin a God I'd give him a 10 * "he's the reaper" that's right bitch show him respect * "you've graduated" well that was fast * yay fiado is back lol * goddess of victory mascot to cute lol * "reaper symbol" daddy's back * I knew Eugene was going thr flags were to real * He'll never see his sister :( * Jesus that was brutal This show is outstanding man it's crazy

Fuck_Taha_Emre

The wholesome episodes were fun while they lasted...

WhoiusBarrel

#**FIDO IS ALIVE YESSSS** Shin piloting that new mech was fucking badass if not for those rapid cuts on the other soldiers who are just talking behind his back. Damnit Eugene just couldn't stop himself from triggering those death flags huh?... That ED song was super powerful too, appreciate that we're still getting new ED songs for special episodes this cour/season as well.

sumrandomboi35

The moment Eugene kept going on and on about how he wants to take his sister somewhere when he takes his next leave i was like mentally shouting at the screen saying "dude stop, you may aswell be having the angel of death flying over your shoulder" ,i honestly feel bad about it but i burst into laughter when the very next frame showed his hand on the ground on what looks like the aftermath of a battlefield, also good to see fido is back, the scene where they should him was pretty emotional too with that piano version of avid playing in the background, really liking this show so far

Manitary

Of course it's good to have Fido back, but not too happy that they pull the "oh they were not really dead" card, especially after that tragic scene seeing snapshots of his life from his pov. Otherwise, great episode, I especially liked the snap transition from Eugene's death flag to his arm with the necklace, skipping the battle.

DerUbi

The moment he started talking about taking his sister shopping I was like "Yeah.. better pick a gravestone man"

LaPusca

My boy Fido is back. :) Bruh Eugene's death looks brutal. :( Man Nina must be devasted to hear the news of her brother's death. :(

Ghoste-Face

I was so happy because Fido is back but the second half of the episode ripped my heart open. Eugene just wanted to show Nina the sea. He just wanted to provide better life for his sister. That's all he wanted. Pain and death is inevitable, indeed. Now, let's wait for Nina's letter.

jimuel23

I feel like Eugene looks like a mix of Lena and his bro Rei. Also damn that mf was a walking death flag🤦🏽‍♂️ Also, I’m scared to see what’s happening on Lena’s side. 1st ep which is 9months ago from their timeline, they were talking about legions invading them… hopefully she still safe n shi

AashyLarry

Asato (the author) actually tweeted about that: > When creating Eugene's character, he was given two traits. "An older brother with glasses", to evoke Rei, and a "serious, diligent Alba", to evoke Lena. He was a character meant to invoke memories of these two influential people in Shin. #eightysix

Pepe_Lives

I did not expect the suffering to begin so early...

LookOutSlipperySlope

Did the Federacy develop their own Para-RAID?

Sandman-AC

They reverse engineered the Republic devices they found on the 86. It's almost an exact copy because modifying the setting would need human experiments, something that wouldn't fly with someone like Ernst in charge. However most of the Federacy's Feldrebs use standard wireless transmissions so they are vulnerable to be cut off completely due to Legion jamming. That's why they use mechanized waves tactics in which the units are very close to each other, enabling limited communication between crews.

AashyLarry

Looks the same. Could be that they are re-using the ones from before. Although i guess it’s been what 6-12 months since they got there? Plenty of time for them to do it possibly

acp101123

Man that sudden shift to Eugene's death was a fucking whiplash.

FruitsPnchSamurai

Poor Eugene, he was riddled with death flags this episode. He didnt stand a chance.

Jrkid100

I rarely ever react to gunshots but man I did a quick blink on that one I knew it was coming but didn't want to believe it. Well see yall next Saturday for more "depression in 20 minutes"

Lol_A_White_Boy

I swear the second he said “my next leave” I just fucking knew that was it for him. Man, that was actually pretty rough to watch. This show just hits like nothing else.

Ssalari

Well well, i certainly didn't expect them to cover this much, (also think they kinda changed the order of the events ). And also didn't expect to show more about Marcel. I liked how they portrayed Eugene's death though it was more painful in LN imo, but more brutal in anime. Poor guy his lower half was blowed up. Since this episode had anime original scene and covered different parts of LN there wasn't any worthable changes, except maybe an inner monologue. So maybe i should add some additiona detailes in source material corner.

* [**Goddess of Victory Stitch**](https://i.imgur.com/y67uD5i.jpg) As expected, [Shin is already showing these chumps](https://i.imgur.com/mGm9wcH.jpg) how it's done. And of course [Shin is getting scolded by their instructor](https://i.imgur.com/5sui6w5.jpg) for his very creative evasive maneuver. [He's clearly not making any friends too](https://i.imgur.com/tlDvMCU.jpg) while in training school. Looks like we're not gonna waste too much time in training school though since we timeskip [3 months ahead](https://i.imgur.com/L1hoQkC.jpg) where the gang has already graduated and Lt. Col. Wenzel surprises them [with a memorial for the fallen Eight-Six](https://i.imgur.com/Fb1MFBl.jpg) with all of their names [engraved in a monument.](https://i.imgur.com/1dzKHjC.jpg) And it that's not the only surprise we're getting! [Fido is back!](https://i.imgur.com/6vJsS17.jpg) Looks like they found his wreck and discovered that his core is still intact. It's sweet to know that [he only activated when Frederica mentioned Shin's name.](https://i.imgur.com/Z8q4Boc.jpg) And just look [at that smile from Shin.](https://i.imgur.com/3Sqs4VI.jpg) seeing his old buddy back. So literally [Frederica's position in the 1028th Test Unit](https://i.imgur.com/hN1tiZl.jpg) is that she's their official mascot? I love it! It's awesome since she clearly knows the dangers and wants to be there on her own accord but not gonna lie, [Giad's old tradition of having young girls in their unit](https://i.imgur.com/dE2XHMy.jpg) as some sort of morale booster is kinda fucked. As much as I love to see [Shin kicking ass again on the field](https://i.imgur.com/XrjKBuG.jpg), I kinda wish we got to take in the battle a bit more. That battle went by way too fast. [That new Reginleif is pretty awesome though!](https://i.imgur.com/jw8VsxY.jpg) It even has a HF blade to cut down Legion! It's perfect for Shin! [All of Shin's superior officers have died](https://i.imgur.com/HSHwrmi.jpg) so he's the only one running his entire battalion right now? That's actually kinda badass. I am surprised that they didn't just put all of the Eight-Six into one special unit. Considering how high their skills are individually compared to regular soldiers and officers, it makes sense to spread them out into different battalions. Jesus fucking christ. One second we have [Eugene all happy and waving off to Shin](https://i.imgur.com/tjJ1ztg.jpg) and then we just hard cut [to Eugene's severed arm](https://i.imgur.com/cJr1IXR.jpg) in the battlefield holding his locket. Fuck. I really should've expected this but I guess this is a good reminder on how people [can die any time in this show](https://i.imgur.com/j6dg6hg.jpg) without any warning or fanfare. It doesn't matter if it's at Republic of San Magnolia or the Federal Republic of Giad, [Shin will continue on with being The Reaper.](https://i.imgur.com/8bHI7lQ.jpg) Looks like we are definitely back into full gear with our first death of this cour. :(

dinliner08

> I am surprised that they didn't just put all of the Eight-Six into one special unit i'm pretty sure all five of them did, they're just not there due to how many help requests they got that forcing them to split up for now

RendDown

I was actually getting so mad with how many death flags is getting thrown, it was getting so obvious and it sucks that that is probably the writers intention the writer is living inside my head rent-free please help me the writer is inside my head
