Seeing something like this IRL would definitely convince a lot of people that they saw an angel, or some other kind of godlike heavenly being. And they'd probably think it was lovely too, as the "escape" seems genuinely playful.

Sexy_Squid89

I was just thinking the same thing. If it was a thousand years ago (or shit, even two hundred years ago) I'd definitely think that was a celestial being.

That reminds me of the ancient Greeks... like if the wind blows a certain way it's always because some god or goddess was angry.

Can you imagine what eclipses did to them? And the power that the first guy to figure it out had over others?

Tbf first guy to figure it out was probably mocked for his fringe radical beliefs. "Oh yeah sure kodo, it's the sun and moon rotating differently and not the gods going to war. Hey everyone! Look at this dumbass!

Probably- until he predicted the NEXT one- and then he probably told them that he was descended from the gods, and wore a funny hat, and rode in a Pope-cart, and had his own city- Nah, that’d never happen.

Crown flash is a rarely observed meteorological phenomenon involving "The brightening of a thunderhead crown followed by the appearance of aurora-like streamers emanating into the clear atmosphere". The current hypothesis for why the phenomenon occurs is that sunlight is reflecting off, or refracting through, tiny ice crystals above the crown of a cumulonimbus cloud. [deleted]

Your Wiki link is broken due to the presence an extra "\" in the hyperlink. Also, it's not JUST light refracting/reflecting through ice crystals, they're responding and orienting to powerful electromagnetic fields, hence the rapid realignment and shape change once the field dissipates due to discharge (lightning) within the cloud system.

IsaacEiland-Hall

Please know that it is a reddit bug. When people post links using new reddit, they will sometimes (at least) show up in old reddit or other places like mobile as broken. But they show up correctly for people using the redesign. It's not OP's fault - it's a reddit bug. Trying to spread that info when I see people talking about this. Thanks, reddit.

turunambartanen

It's not a bug, it's just shit design and working as expected: the link will render properly on new.reddit.com, despite not being saved in their database as a working link. Subtly pushing users to using new.reddit.com. The redesign modifies comments without telling the user why and actively hides those changes when you use the redesign to view the comment. (The reason behind creating malfunctioning links is that underscores will make text render in italics when being processed as markdown which is what reddit uses to allow users to prettify their comments and posts. Instead of educating users to use this tool they assume we're too stupid to understand such simple rules and instead push people to using buttons and use text processing that is intentionally malfunctioning as a bandaid on that broken system.) /Rant I'm sorry, I just really hate the redesign.

IsaacEiland-Hall

> I'm sorry, I just really hate the redesign. Don't be sorry. I agree. I just try not to express that strongly when posting about this so as to not offend the few who love the redesign.

I wonder if these are the cause of some UFO "sightings"

kryptonianCodeMonkey

My mom still won't believe me that the floating orbs of light she saw in the night ON JULY 4TH were just sky lanterns. My wife and I work for her family at a fireworks store. I sell thousands of them. They're very popular. I showed her pictures. But, Nope. They're aliens. My sister agrees even having not seen anything but her blurry pictures. Smh. I've had to talk both out of two mlms too and that's after she failed at Mary Kay and another pyramid scheme back when I was a kid. I love them but, Jesus Christ.

tanafras

These are exactly the sort of people I need to pitch a brand new MLM scheme to so I can get rich and retire. But, I won't because I'm not a charismatic piece of shit.

stillaredcirca1848

My mom ardently believes Venus in winter is a weather balloon that's tethered to the ground and they slowly retract it throughout the night.

Wandersshadow

She doesn’t believe in the solar system?

stillaredcirca1848

She does, she just doesn't believe she's wrong. She gets something in her mind and that's it, no changing it.

ClassifiedName

This might be going too far just to prove a simple point, but have you thought of buying a telescope? Saturn is close enough even really cheap ones can pick it up, but again, spending even $50 just to prove this point might be going too far.

manwhoaskswhy

$50 for a chance at improving someone's critical thinking seems like a worthwhile investment to me.

ClassifiedName

I think so too, but it kind of hinges on the person being persuadable and having $50 to spare. Also I tend to be too hardheaded so I'm aware that continuing arguments like this tends to upset people ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

emsok_dewe

This is a new and exciting one. Why do they do this every night? Maybe more importantly: who are 'they'?

stillaredcirca1848

It's only in winter too. It's because position of Venus is in the direction of the airport. Even telling her that there's no way they would extend a tethered balloon thousands of feet in the air near an airport for hours on end. The "they" I guess would be the National Weather Service.

InlandCargo

Are there sky lanterns that blink? And are there sky lanterns that shoot off flare-like things? Years ago, before drones were a thing, I saw 5 amber-ish lights in the sky that were solid at first, then started blinking in different patterns, and then started shooting off amber colored flare-like things that arced up and then down before fizzling out from each of the 5 lights. Also in different patterns. I don't think what I saw had anything to do with aliens, but I have no idea what they could have been.

DylanBob1991

They can flicker when the flame starts getting low so it looks like they're blinking. There was a popular video on r/UFOs yesterday where one did just that. The flame can also react different ways in different conditions so that could explain the second part.

LightUpDuckMustache

Also air currents could explain part of the second part too

KennieXtendo

Depends on which sightings you’re talking about.

HimalayanPunkSaltavl

I think they are talking about the ones where people see one of these things.

GtheH

Imagine seeing one of these a few hundred years ago or more. They all probably thought it was angels. Gotta admit if I saw that today I’d be pretty weirded out.

Siydge

some sightings are just the government testing military drones.

Amy_Ponder

I'd be stunned if that wasn't most or all of the sightings. The government's deliberately encouraged alien rumors before to throw enemy spies off the scent of new developments in jet / drone tech. That's how all the wild rumors about Area 51 got started- the Air Force encouraged them so people wouldn't realize that what they were actually seeing in the sky were prototypes of the U-2, SR-71, and F-117, among others. I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing it again.

jackneefus

Cloud-to-cloud lighting is common, but if the difference in charge is too low to generate a bolt of lighting, the clouds can still exchange charge via a Birkeland current. Birkeland circuits carry charge in both directions, with a [positive core and a negative ring](https://youtu.be/UnqtZphQ2ew?t=159) moving with a twist in opposite directions. They are usually invisible, but can [glow](https://youtu.be/NtfusWa6JAk) if they become energetic. The accepted explanation for the glow is light reflected off ice crystals like [ice pillars](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Light_pillar#/Images), but that video looked fairly energetic, and it might be glowing under its own power Undoubtedly, invisible Birkeland currents form between the earth and thunderclouds every time they pass. Normally, they are less energetic and invisible. Occasionally, they pinch in various forms, the most common of which is a Z-pinch, which is shaped like a sphere. Because the positive and negative flows are being pinched close to each other, they may glow even though the rest of the Birkeland current does not. In this case, an observer would simply see a glowing sphere hovering in the atmosphere for a while, which is what some of the sightings report. The Foo Fighters are likely in the same category. They are glowing Z-pinches on a Birkeland current dancing between the airplane and the cloud. As the cloud moves away, they would become smaller and eventually break. Since the eye would see it as a physical object, it would interpret physical shrinkage and moving away at incredible speeds, which is part of many sightings.

yoku651

Definitely the source of at least a few minder UFO sightings but also probably the source of ancient people "seeing god(s)"

Creativation

Definitely. /r/CrownFlash

An_person222

But I can't explain it, hurr durr, must be aliens!

Reddit_reader_2206

Remember when we were kids and the teachers were like "There are four types of clouds." Now we are discovering how magnetic field lines are stretched to breaking before snapping back and creating *some* of the aurora we see, and that there is red lightning, green sunsets, and purple sprites, for example. The atmosphere, magnetosphere and everything we see when we look up is hugely complex and unknown.

pattepai

There has to be something else there too, that we cannot measure today.

Zorzarix

It's frustrating. I love watching these PBS Spacetime videos that I barely understand. From what I gather cosmology/physics is kind of in a crisis right now. They can't seem to find a an all-encompassing theory that unifies Relativity and the Standard Model (quantum physics). There's some mathematical anomalies they can't account for. Our current understanding of how the universe came to be and why matter interacts the way it does is incomplete. They have these placeholder theories like dark energy, string theory and dark matter but they just quite can't seem to figure it out. It's like there's an entirely new layer of reality is out there waiting for us to discover it and we're missing a really important piece of the puzzle.

macromoog

You could argue that about any point in the history of science. The unexplained gaps just keep getting smaller. And the only "crisis" in cosmology would have been dreamed up by the editors of whatever show you were watching. Not being able to explain something to 100% is par for the course in science!

AnorakJimi

I watch that channel too, PBS Spacetime, and I have no idea where the person you replied to got the idea that there's a "crisis" in cosmology, because it certainly doesn't come from that channel. Check the channel out, it's very well made: https://youtube.com/c/pbsspacetime

shaker28

https://youtu.be/dsCjRjA4O7Y This video released in March is titled "The NEW crisis in cosmology" and there appears to be one from 2019 just titled "The crisis in cosmology". Edit: [Here's the other one](https://youtu.be/72cM_E6bsOs)

doyouevenIift

The physics is understood, it's the interplay of thousands of different phenomena that make it extremely difficult to model or predict.

tpolakov1

No, *you* are now discovering those things. Most of the phenomena you mentioned have been known from times long before invention electricity and their explanations (at least on the qualitative level) are older than anyone posting on this website. It’s just not something taught in middle school.

CricketDrop

I think their comment was meant to be relatable and not historical

SamaelTheSeraph

I've actually have seen red lightning with a friend. Last like 10 minutes and was insanely cool.

Strong_Pipe_384

Rarely observed but not completely unknown. If any of the 140+ cases in the UAP report were this phenomena then they would have probably been designated as such. If I saw something like that myself I'd shit my pants. Very weird looking to a laymen

You could see why ancient people thought god and the angels live in the heavens( the sky?). Say you are just pastoring a heard, and you look up and happen to see some shit like this. You will literally drop to your knees in fear and confusion and start praying to it. You tell someone which in turn tells someone and all of the sudden you are anointed somehow. AND, if you happen to have narcissistic traits and this happens to you, you would ride this shit till your name is written in a book or two.
