Lightyear | Teaser Trailer

Lightyear | Teaser Trailer

ManajaTwa18

The lighting and visuals are beautiful to behold in typical Pixar fashion, but it seems to be going for a more serious tone in the style of a full blown sci-fi adventure. Very excited for Pixar tackling different genres within the animated framework. The Toy Story connection alone could rocket this thing to 850 million.

Wolventec

this is just the teaser, remember the serious tone the car 3 teaser had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4K7JgPJ8-s

Rk1llz

Post credit scene of him meeting a cowboy at a bar

nicolasb51942003

I was thinking the post credit scene would be the Buzz Lightyear toys being manufactured.

ModsOnAPowerTrip

Nah it is gonna be Buzz and Woody sitting on the coach watching Lightyear on TV.

Saviorofthe_Universe

Both just like “….wowwww.”

JasonK87919

Say, friend, you got any more of that good sarsaparilla?

FordBeWithYou

So, does this mean that technically Tim Allen is the knockoff voice actor the company hired to do the lines for the toy figures?

[deleted]

Yes

FordBeWithYou

I love it

SteveMcQwark

This could also be like the Star Trek (2009) version of the character. This doesn't feel like a 90's sci-fi flick, but it could definitely be an MCU-era reboot of an existing property. That might also help provide an in-universe (for Toy Story) explanation for why the space suit looks like something someone trying to reimagine a cartoonish design in a more "realistic" setting would come up with. But I also like the idea of Tim Allen being the knock-off voice actor.

jayelr

If this one is successful (which I think it will be), I wonder if Pixar tries a “serious” animated western with Woody, Jessie, Bullseye (and maybe even Bo?).

NotTaken-username

Stinky Pete as the villain is required

FordBeWithYou

Stinky Pete is canonically a clumsy buffoon in the show, if it were a movie adaptation of the show he’d be just as if not more of a doofus.

Sad-Distribution-779

not nesscary In universe I could be a "darker more realistic western reboot movie " of the woody roundup gang show Stinky Pete could be reinterpretd as darker bigger threat.

FordBeWithYou

But he wasn’t ever a threat. It’d be like a Mickey Mouse movie getting an evil dark goofy who becomes the antagonist. It’s out of nowhere for an official thing.

Sad-Distribution-779

That would be the joke. Meta commentary on the whole gritty reboot thing. It be pretty toung and cheek.

Rightcontentwrite

I think they make Woody’s Round Up and actual show and put it on Disney+

derstherower

It really speaks to the testament of how good those original Toy Story movies were in that we're over 25 years past and there is still a high level of interest for anything even tangentially related to the series.

DisneyDreams7

That would honestly be horrible. Given how bad the Monsters inc show is in both writing quality and animation

landracer2

Pixar didn't have any hand in the Monster at Work show, it was entirely done by a different studio. For what it's worth though, I loved the show.

TheyArentAny

Pixar's Tombstone

garfe

"Someone's.....poisoned the water hole"

ReservoirDog316

I’d think it’s harder to make western with revolvers and such as a kids movie honestly. Space men space men-ing around space is kinda simple to do comparatively.

ElSquibbonator

Well, they could always make it Pixar's first PG-13 movie. Normally I'd say a PG-13 Pixar movie would be a bad idea, but if they keep it on the "light" side (i.e. no worse than a Marvel movie), and play up the Toy Story connection, it might work.

Timewalker102

Are toy guns not allowed in G-rated movies?

ReservoirDog316

I guess so, but it just feels difficult optics for a kids movie.

TheJoshider10

I hope so. I really like the idea of having in universe products that in turn led to the manufactured toys we see in Toy Story.

ModsOnAPowerTrip

Final scene of Lightyear is gonna be Buzz and Woody watching it on tv. Lightyear is gonna be a movie within the Toy Story world.

Jabbam

So just like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command?

ModsOnAPowerTrip

>Buzz Lightyear of Star Command Couldn't tell you, never watched it.

smally-bells-7

Omg yessss they need to do a western about the origins of Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye.

ModsOnAPowerTrip

I think you just called it. This is gonna happen for sure.

HylianMillennial95

That’s actually not a terrible idea

TrashyMan34574

awful die for that

jayelr

Wishing death on me because of a movie? Yikes.

ednamode23

Pixar’s return to the Billion Dollar Club right here. This looks phenomenal. That scene in the middle on the planet gives me strong Empire Strikes Back vibes. This may actually end up being the best Star Wars film we’ve gotten in decades.

NaRaGaMo

absolutely gorgeous. Finally a pixar movie which looks top-tier pixar

AstroCookieGalaxy

Honestly, this looks fantastic. Pixar are really trying to experiment with their movies and I love it. A Space Adventure was the one thing I wanted Pixar to make, and Lightyear looks amazing

Block-Busted

At this point, Pixar is basically a "scientific" cousin of Disney - in best ways imaginable. 😁

ElPrestoBarba

Put Buzz Lightyear of Star Command on Disney+ cowards

Tanner_Kitchen

I agree with this statement

KnightofIM

Well, With Dune 2 getting announced and this trailer being released I can say it's been a good Australian day. Movie looks fantastic, Shouldn't expect nothing less from pixar but wow. It's shot up my top 5 list for sure.

Fabulous-Cup2913

What does any of this have to do with Australia specifically?

UpwardBoss6727

Time zones presumably. I'm not Australian but I assume that Dune 2 got announced early Wednesday Australian time? It's Wednesday night there rn

KnightofIM

Nail on the head buddy

KnightofIM

Because, That is where I reside

thesnuggyone

I love you

TrashyMan34574

Australia never has a good day

KumagawaUshio

This is not what I expected for a Buzz Lightyear spin-off film. Honestly I expected a big budget reboot of the Star Command 2D film not this. Not unhappy though since it looks actually good.

garfe

> Honestly I expected a big budget reboot of the Star Command 2D film > > That is 100% what I thought this was

TheJoshider10

I think I would have preferred something closer to Star Command but this is a teaser so I'm sure we'll have more clear inspiration from the show in later trailers.

1731799517

God, i just noticed the whiteboard explaining how time is running MUCH slower for them while he does the hyperspace flight. This is going to end like forever war with him out-living everybody while being on missions due to them being marooned in real time?

TheWyldMan

For some reason, I thought this was supposed to be about a "real" astronaut who inspired the buzz lightyear toy. I'm bummed this isn't Pixar's The Right Stuff

landracer2

It is. Chris Evans confirmed that's what the movie is about.

WARMACHINEAllcaps

No that is not what he meant. He said the movie is about the "Real Buzz Lightyear" but he meant real as in he is not a toy. Pete Docter confirmed when this movie was announced that this movie is about a fictional movie in the Toy Story universe. https://youtu.be/sKpa8zG8hJw?t=655

TheWyldMan

Doesn’t look like it from the trailer

edthomson92

Going into it, "I miss this cartoon. This'll be really cute and fun." (Bowie) "Oh my god." Really, they don't have try for epic or whatever, so this could be interesting, even if the trailer actually is just overselling that part

Jakper_pekjar719

The plot probably involves humans finding out aliens, with the star command who wants to wipe them out with a nuke, but Buzz notices the aliens are actually good and he betrays his orders to save them. The time dilation angle however means that Buzz's friend grows years older while for him only a few minutes pass. This will hit the audience in the feels at the end of the movie.

4000kd

I hope they don't pull a cars 3, and the movie's tone is actually like the first trailer

Dr_Vesuvius

For me this has sort of landed in the same sort of uncanny valley as the CGI remakes of Fireman Sam and Postman Pat. It’s lacking the camp I would expect from a Buzz Lightyear film. That being said, it seems very likely to me that this will be a success.

frogsgemsntrains

Pixar's getting really experimental lately and I've been wanting that from them for YEARS. It's interesting to see them tackle what looks to be a straight up space adventure-drama, and I'm interested in that factor alone. The fact that it *is* sorta connected to the Toy Story franchise in a small way does kinda rub that uniqueness off of it for me, I would've vastly preferred it if it were standalone, but I'm sure the film will be good regardless

AgentOfSPYRAL

Agreed 100%, but I get that using Buzz just makes the entire production easier as far as exec pressure goes. And beyond the suit and generally having that space race attitude (which they would want anyway) he's a blank slate so it works out.

MrBKainXTR

Yeah with the tone and feel of this trailer the connection to Toy Story feels bizarre, like I would have totally forgotten it aside from a few aspects that could have easily been changed (like the suit). If anything it feels like an unneeded restriction because the film has to be set pre-1995 rather than present day or in the future like Wall-E.

jlmurph2

But it's a sci-fi movie right? Like some of the tech shown is not real world stuff. Honestly it's like it could just be a movie INSIDE the Toy Story universe.

minutetoappreciate

That's exactly what it is

jlmurph2

Oh awesome

jeanlucriker

It feels more cartoony then Toy Story too. But I’m not just sure if I’ve never noticed that aspect before. It has to tie in well in some form. Apart from talking toys Toy Story always seems to be a little real in many respects, they’ve never mentioned alien life existing or anything

el_t0p0

I hope they get ballsy and go for a PG-13.

matan_vil

To infinity and fucking beyond (what are the cases for 2 F-bomb in a PG-13 movie?)

ProfessionalCrow4816

i thought it was only 1?

AstroCookieGalaxy

Usually that’s the rule, but some movies, like The Social Network can get away with 2, because the rule isn’t “PG-13 movies should only say fuck once”, it’s “Strong Language in PG-13 movies should be infrequent”, meaning you can say 2 fucks, but they must be completely infrequent, like 1 at the end of the first act and one at the midpoint of the 3rd act. Sometimes, movies can get away with saying fuck twice in the same scene, like in Adventures in Babysitting as long as they don’t say it in the rest of the movie. You can argue this is an exception, but I think it follows that infrequency because, while the fucks are right next to each other, that strong language is never used ever, in the rest of the movie

sherm54321

Dunkirk somehow got away with 3 I believe

AstroCookieGalaxy

>(what are the cases for 2 F-bomb in a PG-13 movie?) I’ll give you a serious answer to this question. The Social Network has 2 F-Bombs in it, one when Sean says to Mark to say “I’m Mark Fucking Zuckerberg” or something along those lines, and near the end of the movie, when Eduardo shouts at Sean saying “Sorry! My Prada’s at the cleaners! Along with my hoodie and fuck you flip-flops, you pretentious Douchebag!”

Block-Busted

Also, I seriously doubt that a strong swear word will ever fully appear in a Pixar film aside from direct-to-Disney+ Sparkshort-style films if they start making those - and I don't think those will be counted as "Pixar Canon".

[deleted]

This looks like their least experimental thing to date. An animated version of a generic astronaut sci-fi, there’s no remotely cartoonish angle to it based on this teaser either.

ArthurMorgan1874

This like when people said WandaVision was a deep meditation on grief.

rabbitparrot

If they blend the adult draw in well enough with the boys 5-12, they've got a 1bn film. Looks gorgeous.

ArthurMorgan1874

It looks...fine? I don't really get it. Is it an origin story of Buzz Lightyear or is it a reboot?

rabbitparrot

This is the fictional story of the character that the toy is based on. Think of it like finally seeing Terminator after growing up with a Terminator toy and never seeing the movie.

ArthurMorgan1874

So you're saying Lightyear will have an R-rating and a sex scene?

rabbitparrot

I try not to rule anything out.

PretendMarsupial9

Yes, Buzz hangs full dong in it too/j

Aquilix

iirc it's about the 'actual person' after whom the toy Buzz is modeled in the Toy Story world. So it's in the 'real human world' of the Toy Story films.

Antique_Ring953

No its not unless you wanna imply that all this alien shit just happens to exist in Toy Story

Aquilix

Check my other comment, but there's time dilation in the trailer, as one way to get this into that universe. and [HERE's](https://twitter.com/Pixar/status/1337195328643088387?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1337195328643088387%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fscreenrant.com%2Fbuzz-lightyear-pixar-movie-chris-evans%2F) pixar's tweet about it. Tiny bit of ambiguity still there, but everyone is reporting it as the "real story behind the toy's inspiration"

Antique_Ring953

https://youtu.be/-oSRIRZRBNk This is directly from Pixar. Its not a true story in the toy story universe. Its a film

Aquilix

Good to know. Feels like it diminishes the concept for me though, I was excited about the Toy Story world having wild scifi just off-cam.

ArthurMorgan1874

I heard that too which made me think "Oh it'll be like First Man." Probably shoudn't have have expected that lol.

jjackrabbitt

That's interesting, and kind of weird — as it implies the Toy Story world has space colonies?

Aquilix

Yeah it's a bit weird, but we'll see how they flesh it out! EDIT: Pausing at 1:09 and on the whiteboard there's some time~~travel~~ dilation explanation, which was my other suspicion when I first saw the trailer. So it's in the future of the Toy Story universe maybe? But then how did the story go back in time to be made into toys? Who knows but it looks fun so far.

SteveMcQwark

He could be an Amelia Earhart-type figure, someone who disappears under mysterious circumstances and becomes the inspiration for all sorts of imaginative ideas about what might have happened to him. But I'm strongly leaning toward him only existing as a fictional character in the Toy Story universe (but a real person in the universe of the Lightyear movie itself).

jjackrabbitt

Good catch. Maybe he travels back to around Andy's time period and shares his story — becomes famous, merchandised, etc.? Or something gets sucked back in time — records, video or something that tells the story of Buzz and the same thing happens?

harmenator

I think it is the equivalent of a high budget, serious, Itchy and Scratchy movie.

ArthurMorgan1874

Given what The Simpsons has become, I'm surprised they haven't tried that.

ScarlettPakistan

I would watch the shit out of a tragic drama explaining how Poochie died on the way back to his home planet.

A_Black_Republican

I’m so jacked. Jacked to the TITS

TrashyMan34574

are you ok?

A_Black_Republican

It’s a movie quote from The Big Short

nicolasb51942003

Some people might really not want a Toy Story spin-off, but some might be interested. I think it will do pretty good due to brand recognition, but I don’t think it’ll do as good as the last two Toy Story films. Maybe around $850-900M is my guess.

KnightofIM

Yeah, Inside out numbers seem fair for this one. Similar situation with Jurassic too.

GenXUser

It's going to be up there in the top five box office results for 2022. I'll say $750M with the potential to hit $900M. Opening June 17, 2022, I could see a $115-$150M opening weekend. I think it will obliterate Transformers: Rise of the Beasts at the box office as they open the same day.

nicolasb51942003

Actually, Rise of the Beasts opens a week after Lightyear.

GenXUser

Oh it does, I looked at the wrong weekend on my list.

ProfessionalCrow4816

knowing how well pixar sequels normally do im predicting 750m-800m

1followerbefore2021

But their last 2 TS films made a billion so does this have a chance to do so as well?

emong757

Great trailer, but I kept wanting to hear Tim Allen's voice.

rekipsj

I wonder if they try and use a younger actor to fill in for him.

rabbitparrot

Chris Evans is doing the voice of Buzz.

ProfessionalCrow4816

i wanted to hear patrick warburtons

landracer2

Omg I was watching the trailer and wondering who this new Buzz look reminded me of. This is it!

JannTosh12

So this is a retcon of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon (which apparently Pixar hates so much that they are completely burying that show, it’s not even on Disney Plus) Personally I’d rather have Patrick Warburton back as Buzz if not Tim Allen

ProfessionalCrow4816

same

vision6300

It is Chris Evans who is voicing Buzz, dummy.

PayneTrain181999

Emperor Zurg: “SHIT” Buzz: “Language!”

MoonMan997

If I gained any authority in life, I would lobby to have this joke banned

One-Dragonfruit6496

$925M WW

Plisc

Interstellar vibes

JenovaProphet

Is it too early to say I want a whole Lightyear cinematic universe? Damn, this looks far too good.

McJumbos

interesting to see how pixar has evolved over the years and how their movies have shifted away from just being "kids movies"

Reditate

So he has brown hair.

ElSquibbonator

This looks very fascinating, but after what happened to *Raya and the Last Dragon*, I've learned not to trust teasers.

smally-bells-7

$800M-1B. I’m calling it now. This will wipe the floor with Minions: The Rise of Gru next summer.

UpwardBoss6727

I recall they did a Buzz Lightyear direct-to-video film before that was pretty good so I have high hopes for this. Toy Story 4 was immensely disappointing imo so hopefully this ends up being a good recovery. Box office wise, I'm gonna say this'll drop a bit from TS4 due to the spinoff factor but it'll still do very well for itself. $100m OW $400m DOM $1b (just) WW

XAMdG

Liked it, but it's kinda weird to think that timeline wise this would be a prequel to Toy Story. A devolution in technology even greater than Star Wars. Better I guess to not think of the movies as related.

sherm54321

Well it isn't a prequel really as this isn't connected to the timeline of toy story. This is essentially the fictional movie Andy would have watched that the toy was created from.

TheGeoninja

I’m guessing inside the Toy Story Universe, this would be the first of a dozen Star Command Cinematic Universe movies

N_Cat

I'm interpreting it more as the (in-universe) 20-years-later big budget reboot of a classic toy franchise, that originally had a TV show. Like the Michael Bay *Transformers* franchise, but without the negative stigma that particular example has.

sherm54321

Haha I like that

GenXUser

Shutup and take my money! Pixar's new look is amazing. I can't wait to see this on IMAX like two dozen times! This will be the breakout film for 2022!

Hobdel1

boring, guaranteed flop

Successful_Leopard45

First billion dollar animated film

NotTaken-username

There’s already been several of them

Successful_Leopard45

I meant since the pandemic

1followerbefore2021

I think Minions might beat Lightyear depending on the release date

aagaash2001

*Minions: The Rise Of Gru* releases two weeks after *Lightyear*, unless they decide to move it up. Hot take: I think *Minions: The Rise Of Gru* will struggle to reach $600M-$700M.

nicolasb51942003

Frozen 2 (unless you want to count The Lion King remake as an animated film) is literally the highest grossing animated film of all time and it’s at over $1.4B.

BradyDowd

It’s releasing on Disney+, isn’t it?

MonkReal7708

Nope it's going to be released in theaters next year

BradyDowd

Thanks for the clarification 👍🏻 For some reason I thought I associated this with Disney+ Day or something.

kaylthewhale

Lightyear as the runaway hit of the year, beating expectations, and potentially crossing $1b? Why yes I think so! Edit: typo

InfinitePixar

Highest grossing film from Disney next summer

blueblurz94

I completely forgot Chris Evans was voicing Buzz.

iChopPryde

Holy smokes! The animation is absolutely gorgeous!

minionchamp24

So basically Disney’s Interstellar. Nice.

TheBlueSorcerer2099

But hopefully better.

Eren01Jaeger

Is it a prequel ? I want to know because i hate them.

Purple_Quail_4193

That teaser was too short. I want more

FlintBuster

Very Star Wars-esque. $900M at least.

bestmaokaina

$1.2BN ww locked

ChaloDreamworks

This will do really well

Block-Busted

We now have only **Searcher Clade** teaser to look forward to. Make your move, WDAS. 😁

[deleted]

This looks quite interesting.

Additional_Meeting_2

So what is this supposed to be in-universe? The reboot of the 2D animated series that came out when Andy was a kid for Bonnie’s generation?

WARMACHINEAllcaps

It's the film that inspired the Toy.

StrikingPeanut1087

Looks like a fun, good old fashioned adventure story about a dude being a bro and exploring shit in the name of high adventure. Could be good.

22AgentBrown

This looks surprisingly cool

aagaash2001

$102M OW $357M DOM $667M OS $1.024B WW

randomjournalist1

Milking the Disney strategy. Movies like this should flop so the milking can stop.

TrashyMan34574

Fuck this movie like ong his face is so trash like bro who even this this thanos ripoff like bruh Im actually going to die.
