How deep is the ocean.

How deep is the ocean.

carntzen92

This really doesn't do any justice to show the scale of it all... You lose reference immediately.

trockenwitzeln

Agreed. Moves too quick and not great with scale.

DeepIndigoSky

Because it’s a sped up version of the original video from MetaBallStudios on YouTube

LosSoloLobos

I wish it were an interactive application to scroll through or something

street__lights

[Here is a neat similar concept](https://neal.fun/deep-sea/) with animals and the depths they can exist in, on a scrolling webpage.

ButterflyAttack

Thanks, this is much better! Was a bit surprised to find the elephant seal chilling at 2.4 km down.

JonLucPerr1776

Elephant seals can dive deeper than any other mammal that isn't a species of toothed whale.

utastelikebacon

Just because I've seen elephant seals on various nature docs and heard of the name before I felt like I knew the elephant seal, it was shocking to see that guy could go down that deep. I thought I knew you elephant seal, it seems i dont know you at all.

street__lights

Haven’t fact checked any of it but there’s definitely some surprises in there

TenGreenFingers

[> Southern elephant seals can dive from 400 to 1,000 meters \(1,300 to 3,300 feet\) for up to 20 minutes at time. The deepest recorded dive doubled that average, reaching a little over 2,100 meters \(6,890 feet\) deep.](https://oceanwide-expeditions.com/to-do/wildlife/elephant-seal) A few hundred meters short but still very impressive.

SrslyCmmon

Narwhals and a shark that both live in the deepest and shallow waters was pretty interesting too.

FitzChivFarseer

Oh wow. I know. It's really dumb and of course it makes sense that we've been down there (otherwise how do we know *anything in that link*) but I'm amazed people went down there before we put a man on the moon. Also Piccard. That's not a coincidence lol

ToSeeOrNotToBe

> makes sense that we've been down there (otherwise how do we know > >anything in that link) Just wait until you hear about the 1920s technology called sonar!

johnknierim

Justthetip1996

Way more interesting that the original post!

elr0y7

Neat, I thought I scrolled down pretty far, then I looked at the scroll bar...

Thank you for sharing this!

bananawrangler69

Imagine being a fish living 200 years in pitch black ☠️

Rstytrmbn3

This is the coolest thing I’ve seen/done today! Thank you!

DesperateOrange5581

This ones great too.. what must 33 bar of hydrostatic pressure on every cell of the body felt like? Going 18ft down inside a swimming pool itself feels scary. Cant imagine.

jeb_the_hick

Because this is a low quality, sped up repost

Bagelwolf

It still scared TF outta me, so it's at least _somewhat_ effective... 😰

HillDrag0n

what this .gif is really missing is a slow zoom out to show how infinitesimal the depth of the ocean is compared to the size of the earth. like as deep as it gets, it's really no more than a tiny pock mark on the surface of the planet.

tk1712

I think I read somewhere that if you were to reduce the earth to the size of a pool ball, including all the highest mountains and deepest ocean trenches, it would be smoother than a pool ball.

Panzerbeards

Yeah, most planetary bodies are incredibly smooth compared to objects we experience at a smaller scale. The deepest trenches and highest mountains are only shallow scratches and imperceptible ridges on the outer crust.

Tanamr

I think Vsauce mentioned this was incorrect, and the pool ball would be smoother. The number in the pool ball specifications is for roundness, not smoothness. Actual pool balls are much smoother than the specifications, and smoother than the Earth.

tk1712

Yeah I think you’re right

Hey, Sorry you were downvoted. Reddit isn't very tolerant sometimes. Lareddit only likes herself

iplaypokerforaliving

This video seems so chaotic for no reason

HeatherReadsReddit

That’s really cool. I do wish that the angle of the text were different for some, and that it was slower in some parts, for me to be able to read it more easily.

numanoid

Another fine original ruined by a shitty gifmaker. Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5C7sqVe2Vg

_patrickwelker

Reddit should do the mature thing and fade out GIF’s. They exist just because of a retro-trend and there is no reason why we can’t use MP4’s instead 95% of times. The global impact on server space and transferred data would be a true environmental change.

Comrade132

Thank you, yes. God I fucking hate this shit. It's inferior in nearly every capacity: worse quality, often doesn't have sound, takes longer to load.

LazyKidd420

Fucking sound but just a blank or black screen. Ugh

gingerkid427

They already have tho? Actual GIFs are pretty rare these days. Most of the “GIFs” you’re seeing these days are WEBMs or MP4s.

xxX-grumpymonk-Xxx

this is by far the most thoughtful argument i have heard on the subject.

Fred-U

... It's pronounced gif

FittedSheets88

Nikolaj

Fred-U

I feel like I'm saying it... Nikolaj

Reddituser34802

Second most thoughtful argument on the subject.

Jack-ums

**no,** its pronounced "*gif*." Rabble rabble rabble

LJ-Rubicon

Only thing though is that Gyfcat actually is in MP4 format, so yea ...

Raeli

But this already **is** an mp4. The issue is more that the person that converted the Youtube video did a shit job, and then add on additional compression when uploading to gfycat, you get a poor experience. But none of that has anything to do with the file format.

Amunium

>there is no reason why we can’t use MP4’s instead 95% of times. That's exactly what's already happening. At least 95% of what people call GIFs are already MP4s without sound. Including this one. So... mission accomplished, I guess.

smooth_bastid

Are mp4s smaller in size vs gifs?

Wispborne

Yes, often by over 80%.

smooth_bastid

Dang, I thought gifs were used to cut down the size of videos, not increase it. It probably is true when a gif consists of like 4 images and no sound

Amunium

Not really. GIF is originally a format for static, indexed colour images, that was expanded in 1989 to allow very simple animations that are just an array of images shown in sequence after each other. By modern standards it's just a terrible format, only supporting very limited colours, no temporal compression, and an image compression that doesn't handle high resolution pictures well, as it was always intended for small illustrations and logos. But in good news, the vast majority of things you see and think are GIFs aren't. They're just MP4 videos without sound.

kahnwiley

I am no computer expert, but wouldn't there be compatibility issues for older computers/graphics cards? (Like, *really* old computers from the 2000's or earlier?) I assume some people still use those sorts of devices?

Specker

I’d posit that any video card from the early 2000s that’s *still around and functional now* was a high-quality card when it came out, so it *probably* can run MP4s. MP4s at a reasonable resolution (<1080p) are rather trivial for any graphics card. They can process higher resolution videos too, but increased power consumption is the trade-off, normally. Along with user-experience related things like longer loading times for bigger videos, or if the users on mobile the phone’s getting hot because it’s trying to download the video on a shitty 5mb/s connection and is taking too long. But gif/mp4 compatibly like we’re talking about depends on the web browser more than anything.

kahnwiley

Once again, not an expert, but I still have an old laptop from 2005 and it has trouble with 360p YouTube videos. It definitely cannot run any newer compressed video formats or play DVD's. Not everyone in the world has access to the latest technologies, which is why a lot of these old standbys continue to proliferate long after they have been superseded by several new levels of tech.

slimkev

Nah people don't keep using gifs because of compatibility.. It's laziness and habit.

DannyBoy7783

The more important question is who cares? Why do we need to hold back to accommodate 20+ year old computers?

kahnwiley

Because not all people have the economic means or access to buy a new computer or equipment. Remember there are people in certain areas that still use dialup internet.

unkiestink

So much better, thank you

isochromanone

Cropped to eliminate maker's info too...

cortlong

Yeah this is WAY better

nodnodwinkwink

If you're wondering, like me, how the hell does that Perdido oil platform stay in position?? [The answer is multiple sea floor anchors attached to the platform with chains and ropes.](https://youtu.be/h3Yu9Xxne58?t=1062) Seems crazy considering how rough the ocean can get.

whatatwit

I wonder if they'd like this on /r/thalassophobia/.

God this version is SO much better. Thank you.

ObviousBS

Just checked the wiki for the USS Johnston. Was in service just for a year before it was sunk in battle during ww2. The wreck is located in the Philippine trench. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Johnston_(DD-557)

RaPharoh

The Johnston is the deepest shipwreck to have been found. She was sunk during the Battle of Samar where she famously charged a vastly numerically superior Japanese fleet.

ObviousBS

What i found crazy is they didn't find the whole wreck, only where she hit a ledge of the ocean floor, then sank deeper. The submersible was at its limit and couldn't go deeper.

Manthing81

That was back in about 2019, just a few months ago they were able to dive deeper and found the rest of the wreck.

tealsteel123

Was just a about to look it up on Wikipedia. Thanks!

youngruler

Awesome find! Didn't know that

secondoptionusername

I just saw this gif three times today, last one was two posts ago and by far this version is the worst quality of all three (in terms of blockiness)

LurkerFailsLurking

Xkcd did it better https://xkcd.com/1040/large/

mick_au

Must be some great old shipwrecks in those deeper oceans!! And killer sea monsters.

JPhrog

This still boggles my mind! According to NatGeo "How much of the ocean has been explored 2020? More than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped, explored, or even seen by humans. A far greater percentage of the surfaces of the moon and the planet Mars has been mapped and studied than of our own ocean floor." https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/ocean/

S9CLAVE

I mean tbh, I would think a vacuum is easier to engineer for, than substantial pressure on a submerged object. Considering the depths of the ocean and that pressure increases by one entire atmosphere, every 10 meters…. That’s a hell of an engineering feat, to both find a material and design it in such a way that it can sustain human life inside of it, while maintaining its functions to travel deep enough to see everything *AND* make a return trip to the surface.

MinecraftHobo135

[Here is the original source](https://youtu.be/Q5C7sqVe2Vg). If you're going to copy a video, pixelate it and crank the speed up, at least give reference to the creator.

Blahahahah69

Idk this video was only 54 sec but it felt like THE LONGEST FUCKING VIDEO EVERRRRRR

PorcelainCeramic

Be humble or the ocean will make you.

cofiddle

Feel like the sped up version loses some of the feel of the original. The original is fucking terrifying, the pace is much better

ewahman

If you want to see the actual education you are missing from watching this shitty gif maker who has been simply stealing their work for karma rewards, subscribe to the metalballstudio YouTube channel. There are some great videos that keep perspective.

Tidezen

Thanks, I looked it up and the full video is *much* better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5C7sqVe2Vg

Crooked5

Lol this is the worst edit… just butchered the persons work. I’d personally delete this.

moitacarrasco

It’s a shame that it’s a wasted effort, graphics look cool, but it’s too fast, you can’t read anything and get no real sense of scale.

zoom100000

Holy fuck this must have taken so much effort and they blew it. Needs to go way slower and zoom in and out more often to keep the scale. Could this be an interactive app where you can move it around with your mouse? EDIT: I see someone posted the original: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5C7sqVe2Vg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5C7sqVe2Vg) Way better! Would still like to see it interactive.
