A little more context, like location, would be cool.
Humans are an infection and I’m worried we’re gonna kill the host.
Nah, the host usually blooms toxic algae that will kill everything in its path when we stress it out to much. We fine /s
You joke, but that's literally what's happened multiple times.
That may be why they said it....
Who knows, maybe they just like algae and hate everything else.
I use algae on my toxic waste and Spam sandwiches
Don't you mean "I use algae on my toxic waste and toxic waste sandwiches."
I was just learning about that!
Just a thought, but swapping out the word “blooms” for something more sinister like “invasion” or “assault” may give it the proper word association-to-death-potential vibe.
If so having killed around 0.2% of the population since the beginning of Covid it has been largely unsuccessful.
someone started the symptoms to early in plague inc
Let me introduce you to Thanos Services.
We have a track record of 50% annihilation against low percentages of covid.
don't worry. the host has been alive for millions of years. It may be uninhabited for a while, but it will bounce back. let's just say, the host knows how to deal with infection.
Exactly. The majority of life on earth is bacteria that barely noticed humans so far.
True. We’re just another asteroid. The K-T boundary was worse than anything we could ever do. Life uh, finds a way.
exactly. that's why I'm cynical when someone says "save the planet". planet doesn't need saving, our asses need saving.
yeah save the planet means save our fragile interconnected ecological life web.
the planet itself is fine unless we get hit by something moving near the speed of light more than 10% the size of the planet, that would destroy the planet.
as long as there one bacteria alive, life has a chance to recover. may take a couple hundred millenias, but it will recover. it's humanity that's going to be erased. flora and fauna may look different than today. but it will live anyway.
well that is until the sun expands engulfing the earth killing anything that might be left on it
true. but that's inevitable. planet equivalent of death from old age.
If we play our cards right, it's an event our descendents will be watching from their own safely distant home planetary systems.
In fact, life altogether may be irrelevant to the universe. Matter is matter.
Concious life is just the universe witnessing itself. We are part of the universe, not just in it.
Agreed. Human arrogance is terrifyingly stellar.
Or just be inhabited by different things. Cyanobacteria fucked things up by releasing loads of gas that was toxic to most life on earth....oxygen.
I'm actually thinking about it the same way.
I see the world as a big living organism and humanity as a temporary virus, which will sooner or later be gone. Every being strive for it's wellness and harmony and will do what it takes to get rid of the disease.
You have to keep in mind that while this looks shocking, the rural populations in China have mass migrated into the cities over the years for a better life which has help lead to their economic boom. Rural areas are essentially being reclaimed by nature
China has been actively reverting farmlands into forests and had multiple ongoing projects turning deserts into green area, but at the same time, they make tourist hotspots in rural areas, which I hate that a lot.
Yup. They’ve also done more than any country in terms of reforesting the land. Just lookup NASA satellite study of how much China has re-greened the land in the past ten years. I’m not suggesting China is a good model for a country/society but there’s at least a bit more perspective to be had here.
They just plant one kind of tree which then dies
TBH only a government like China can do things at this efficiency but uh... Yeah, what's the cost, so... Yeah hmm
LMAO you guys are so far up China’s ass. They’re the worst polluters in the world. Move there you commies
Per person, they don’t come close to the US in pollution. They are just a country with a lot of people.
Per capita is the dumbest thing to base off of because the majority of pollution is caused by industry. That’s just an excuse to divide by a bigger number
Unless the Chinese start driving around in SUVs sucking down Big Macs and living in McMansions I suspect not taking that into account is just an excuse to shirk personal responsibility.
As for industry, then we have to separate pollution creators versus pollution cause. If a Chinese factory manufactures a product for an American company that is primarily consumed in America, how should we allocate the blame for the pollution?
I’m not excusing China’s record here, especially with specific things like the recent CFC incident. But to point to the most populous nation and say they’ve got the highest raw pollution numbers is also disingenuous. If China were split into 4.5 different US-sized countries their numbers would suddenly look a lot better.
Oh dear. All I heard was derp der derp commie! Lol
This goes against the narrative. You need to stop that whole “thought” thing you’re applying here.
Densely populated areas like this are actually less harmful to the environment than sprawled out suburbs because they don’t require ppl to drive long distances to get everywhere.
How do you do today agent Smith?
Easy up on the Hitler talk there buddy.
What most people don't realize is that nature can handle a beating, while humans cannot. The climate crisis is not about being kind and saving the planet, it's about not making it inhospitable to us...
The earth is 4.5 billion years old and has survived extereme cataclysmic events, i think it will be fine dont worry.
Well the host is several billion trillion tons of iron so I doubt we’ll be killing it anytime soon
Maybe so, but we are also the consciousness that is experiencing this. If we where not here, who would care about any of this? Yes we are having an effect, yes we can do better, but really, in the big scale of things, we are utterly insignificant. The earth is mostly empty. BUT only in consciousness/experience any of this makes any difference. The universe will be fine without us, without consciousness, but how would you know? Most humans are kind. Most humans are awesome. Most human care. Consciousness is straight up miraculous. I for one am rather impressed with the things we can achieve. Let's not be too hard on ourselves.
oh shut up with this crap. nature is a fucking ass hole. the billions who have died to exposure warrant no sympathy from me towards nature. we’ve just gotta make sure we don’t cook to death on here.
You’re part of the problem for being born, then. Selfish.
The host will be fine. Seriously, Earth and live on Earth will go on. The Earth is just going to change -- or rather, is going *to be* changed by humans -- so that we as a species become extinct. Not a big loss in the grand scheme of things. Species come and go all the time. We're just unique in the sense that we're actively working on the "go" part out of greed and stupidity.
We're just going to render the host unable to do so. It'll still be here after we're gone.
Calm down there Agent Smith
Im the 666th upvote… devilish ;)
I had a smile from a perivous post and then I saw this post and I lost thag smile too fast. It's so sad seeing this.
When the host starts to run a fever, things will get interesting for us. Climate change anyone?
WONT SOMEBODY PLEEEEEEEASE THINK OF THE ECONOMY
Look at the bright side, we’ll overpopulate and deplete our resources and once we do, we’ll kill each other into extinction, but the world will continue without us, perfectly fine like it did before us and it would rebalance itself, like she’s done so many times before.
Most Shenzhen residents are only children, products of the one-child policies that forcibly sterilized countless Chinese- including all the women in my family, because the government believed as you do. Now we have a demographic crisis, too many aging, not enough young people to work and support the economy. Be careful of "humanity is a plague" talk, there are solutions to this available to those who are pragmatic and powerful.
I wonder how OP thought the average redditor would know that.
Evergrande doing what it does best... Oh wait a minute..
And why is “1964” in Arial, but “Now” is in Comic Sans?
Also a red circle so I know what to look at.
the top picture or the bottom picture?
That’s Shenzhen - from a group of small villages to a city of 20 million in less than 60 years.
Farm that karma baby. No idea the context, the meaning or anything , just post it and sit back and smile, right redditor?
Who actually gives a flying fuck about karma
Apparently OP does.
What in his response indicated that?
Without the dystopian filter- [this is a pretty typical view.](https://twitter.com/SeanUM_China/status/1434021365460332544)
Better [before and after](https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/1383522677160247298) pictures.
I'm a Shenzhen local, ask me anything.
Are you the sexy cyborg lady from YouTube? I'm just gonna ask questions first and then lurk profile later lol.
Edit: you are!! I love your videos and think you are a very talented engineer.
Yep! That's very kind of you, thank you!
Thanks for this. Was going to say I get a strong feeling the picture leading this thread is *slightly* out of context unless China has demolished entire mountain ranges and the concept of colours.
The growth of Shenzhen is indeed spectacular, but it isn't quite the dystopian nightmare the image leads us the believe.
It's very picturesque, but sure there are cautionary tales here- [we some insane levels of public surveillance etc.](https://www.scmp.com/tech/china-tech/article/2138960/jaywalkers-under-surveillance-shenzhen-soon-be-punished-text) which is mostly non-intrusive (and effective) but certainly would be considered dystopian by many Westerners.
Ooohhh trust me. I know all about how China works. See my thread history if you can be bothered - you'll know the one I mean!
If I were to visit China for the first time would you suggest I visit Shenzhen or would I be better off going to other cities like Shanghai?
Really the only reason to start in Shenzhen is if you are a hardware (electronics) geek. Shenzhen has very little traditional culture, nightlife etc. Shanghai is more walkable, better sightseeing, history and culture. Shenzhen is where you come to build your crowdfunded Kickstarter product.
Omg it's you! 😂
Shanghai is the beat city. Beijing is more dirty but way more culture and the Great Wall I really loved it but it is harder for westerners. XiAn terracotta warriors is pretty fun you can do a bullet train there die a day or two. ChengDu is great as well amazing food. Then finally ZhangJiaJie is spectacular the mountains were the inspiration for the floating mountains in Avatar. I’d try to hit all those places in a loop or at least Shanghai Beijing ZhangJiaJie
I have a question. How? At some point the whole town had to be a single, gigantic construction site. How did the original townsfolk cope with that transition?
It's constantly a giant construction site! It never ends, jackhammers day and night. It can be hard to sleep...
But as far as "original" there are only a few thousand of those- and they are mostly rich and mostly living abroad because they got massive compensation for their land. There's only really people who emigrated a decade or two earlier than everyone else.
That's badass. It looks so beautiful.
It is to me- it's home, but objectively it's a little bland. It does not have the historical architecture of other Chinese cities.
Can’t be the same location, the clouds are different
That was yesterday in ancient Greece.
I like the way they have removed all traces of nature and color.
And human rights too
who cares I just got a new iPhone
The average Zhou in China today has more freedom than the average Zhou in 1960 did.
That really says more about China under Communist Mao than China under Commucapitalist Xi Jinping.
Those were missing to start with, too.
There's a filter on the image that enhances the effect too.
lol the spooky gray filter
Nice grey dystopian effect
Endless city skyline of Tokyo: 😍❤🥰
Endless city skyline of anything from China: 😱😓🤬
A man does a magic trick in China
Redditors : this has something to do with the ccp and he is a spy .
Typical double standards
Why the fuck would you not tell us where this is
Honestly it is only 40 years. Shenzhen special economy zone was established at 1984, What before this time is a small fish town called BaoAn.
Ah yes. That city we all know.
A quick google search and we have … Shenzhen China
I love how the picture of 1964 is coloured and picture of today is black and white
Imagine being a toddler in 60s and then witnessing it now.
In the same time span we went from 4 billion to almost 8 billion people on earth....
If it's the same place (geographically) , it's does not appear to be the same image location. There is no river in the city image as shown in the rural image and no large bay in the bay in the background as shown in the top left of the city image.
TIL it’s 2024
TIL rounding exists
But you said “only” 60 years. It’s been almost or nearly 60 years. Words mean things.
What the hell CCP
Humans are a planetary infection. Those sci fi alien characters you see in movies that invade planets and destroy them? That’s basically us.
They said f these hills we need more buildings.
Am I supposed to believe thats the same location? Theres bodies of water in the "after" that aren't in the "before". Check the mountains in the background
The hills do look the same, the picture doesn't line up exactly. If you look at the back left of the bottom picture you can make out one of the hills from the top picture.
I mentioned the hills in reference to the body of water since in the "after" photos it looks like there is a lake/bay while the before is just grassland
Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Does look a bit odd now that you've mentioned it.
Because hills can’t be moved or created, same with bodies of water. /s
My friends Caterpillar, John Deere, and Komatsu would like to talk to you outside...
My bad. Thought it was thick enough. Added the /s. I move dirt for a living, Deere sucks for it lol
It was..i hate now we all have to add an /s now when it should be plainly obvious.
We can be friends
There's an article about it in the comment above yours.
Found the conspiracy-Pirat
Or you could just google Shenzhen China.
Op never mentioned the city in the original post fyi. No way i was just going to know to Google Shenzhen. Either way even after having done so, the before and afters dont even look like the same area of the city. So without knowing the city its easy to think its two different locations.
I freaking love Toledo, but it peaked in the 50s
1964 looked like Heaven..
This is very color distorted. Prolly taken in the monsoon season or something. Go and check out the comment by the Shenzen person above
Reminds me of that BBC video about Wuhan where they put on a sickish yellow filter for the English version and leave the Chinese version unfiltered. I'm not saying that is the case here but it's a possibility.
No its cool. I didn't want to easily see where this is.
Beautiful valley to ugly hellscape, congrats humans.
I hate China
The future sucks
HOLY SHIT! How did they get trapped in the time of black and white?
We must save these people!
we are literally cancer... an unchecked unwelcome growth upon the world...
I think about this all the time. We have been around for 300-200k years and we’ve undone hundred of millions of years of earths progress
things really only went off the rails from an environmental sustainability standpoint when we industrialized in the last few hundred years, which, to your point, is a rate of change beyond comprehension (on a cosmic scale).
it seems we're very unlikely to willingly deindustrialize ourselves, so nature is preparing to do it for us, agreed.
Yes it’s crazy to think we only discovered petroleum only 200 years ago and ever since, the pace at which the world moves has increased a hundred fold.
The only solution to all this is earth ridding itself of us. Which is inevitably drawing nearer like you said. I wish I could see a 100 years from now or even 50. I’m sure it’s a completely different world than it is now but I wonder if it’s for the best or for the worst :/
gotta take it with some context. in order to preserve the environment we have to create effective high density urban areas for humans to live in instead sprawling out across the rest of nature, and also abolish capitalism and the united states hegemony. China will offer both and they are very aware of climate change
Oh, based department, you're finally here
This makes me sick
Yes but where do you live exactly? What time do you live in?
We are all a part of this. We live in city’s. Daily we consume many things that keep this whole machine going and going. Saying you feel sick when you see this is extremely hypocritical. Typing from your computer or phone. Surrounded by mass manufactured items. We are the reasons these cities need to exist. We are the reason Mother Earth is dying faster and faster everyday
Are we expected to believe there the same location?
They’re, and yes…
Where is this?
This is primarily due to Chinas massive underdevelopment up until the 1980s, coupled with giving certain cities preferential treatment. Basically, you create the perfect environment for the rapid emptying the countryside, and the creation of massive new cities.
This photo doesn’t so much represent excessive development, it represents how far behind China was for centuries. And how much it had to catch up. If it’s economic growth had been faster, these cities would have existed before the 1960s.
Those mountain ranges don't look the same, and that's a lot of displaced water
Absolutely incredible. Human ingenuity!
I hope there's life elsewhere in the universe.
Looked so much more peaceful is 64
Yo where the green at
Shenzhen is one of the greenest cities in the world! [Full of parks and hills](https://streamable.com/xtkbbn) to hike up. [We're ranked number 5 in the world for green space](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/cities-with-the-most-greenspace.html)
Well this image is misleading. Thanks
Can we go back?
Hideous concrete jungle
A little bit of a jungle, in the old old neighborhoods at night, [a little cool also...](https://streamable.com/5b7z2i)
America normalizing trade relations is a heck of a thing. US Dollars built that. Made in Hong Kong and Made in Taiwan became Made in China.
Spoiler alert: half those buildings are empty, owned by Evergreen as part of a state-funded ponzi scheme that has recently collapsed, taking the fortunes of millions of working people down with it. These scumbags had the nerve to actually demand workers loan money to the company.
And you can Google all that yourself, as most of you won't read the links I vote in the first place.
Hint: evergreen demands workers loan it money.
Copy and paste.
Evergrande =/= Evergreen.
Kind of kills your credibility when you can't even get the company name right.
Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A _virus_. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.
But it hasn't been 60 years. 2024 - 60 ≠ 2021
That..says…1964? I know it’s not exactly 60, I just rounded to the nearest 10
Replace interesting with Sad for this one. The expansion of “humanity” is sad
Santa Fe is kicking ass!
Both are places some earth?
Woah woah. They still have three years to add on until your title is true.
That poor sky...
@OP why your math brokey????
Development off the charts, keep it up.
