/r/malaysia daily random discussion and quick questions thread for April 23, 2021.

It's bloody hot in KK, Sabah right now. Please please please please hujan laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Hi monyets - I am planning to buy a new laptop and am choosing between a Lenovo ryzen 5 and an M1 macbook air.
Does anyone have a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 or an M1...or maybe you've got both to compare?
Hehe please gimme your 2 cents and thoughts about how I should go about this. I'm really looking for a good all rounder - surf the net, Netflix, watch you tube, Ms office, some programming and playing some games like MHW - I'm not looking to go super high quality - just high and good framerates la.
Pic for the Lenovo ryzen 5 -
what mori_forest said. Macbook really not suitable for games unless you want to play Apple Arcade games.
go for Ryzen. make sure have SSD
Ok thanks man! Yeah I checked out the ryzen last night and damn am I outdated - and I only last updated my pc like 2-3 years ago. Turns out with ssd nvme m.2, windows can make use of your ssd as ram too! 🤯
If you plan to play games always go for windows.
Yeah I was thinking if maybe with Ma, I use Rosetta stone or VM to run windows and so run steam like that. But then again macam running windows with extra steps ja..😬
Thanks for the input sir!
Bless all my rich friends on big scholarships overseas who are tweeting about how much they hate the country and can't wait to leave.
I always had a friend who could't wait to finish his studies so he could get out the country and I was why man malaysia isn't that bad but now I am kinda leaning toward his viewpoint after seeing all the recent news.
This is so relateble that it hurts
Is it really not "normal" to have voices/conversations in your head?
Like I kinda have conversing thoughts discussing whatever. And we use "we".
On another note, I watched Mark Rober's video about his kid and he mentioned how autist kids may have sensory issues where the tags on shirt bothers them. I had that problem as a kid. It was a really big deal but it was kinda only a phase or something cause I kinda grew out of it. I still feel bothered *sometimes* but it's rare and I can kinda brush it off.
I'm not sure if by "voices", you meant that you hear external voices that doesn't come from yourself. But on another note, yes, I do usually have conversations with my own self.
I usually do it alone and I find it more relaxing compared to my daily conversations with my friends, that probably it have to do with me being a more shy person.
But other than that, it's okay to have conversations with yourself imo. Just don't do it in the public or people will actually think that you're some kind of a weirdo or you keep a saka.
i talk to myself all the time, and i verbalise my thoughts in the shower or while walking on the streets. Or I have a conversation with myself where i ask myself a question internally in my head, and reply myself out loud (not in public la). Idk haha i just think its my own way of thinking and figuring out the world.
Yes but before that, some terpaling protective politicians will make police reports against you first.
That's my point. For some, royalty and politicians cannot be touched. If you are Malaysian who write that article, expect police reports will be made against you. Or politicians might just sue you, win or lose is another story. It doesn't matter if you are right. If you mean 3rd party like international journalism, well government will just block you from accessing the articles if they feel like. Or they just ignore it like recent vaccine report or maybe sue.
MKN's telegram be like:
"PKP di kawasan A dilanjutkan"
"PKP di kawasan B dilanjutkan"
"Bazaar ramadhan dilanjutkan"
Excuse me, what?
Any suggestions on non-biased online news source? I kind of want to start reading the news by myself instead of watching the TV's or hearing from the mouths of my friends and teachers.
Reuters and AP for international news. They are very neutral and stick to factual reporting.
For Malaysia it's harder. I'd suggest you take The Star and Malaysiakini and compare both.
None. You will almost never get unbiased news. Since there is always an agenda.
Best way is to read/ consume everything then form your own conclusions.
Listen to this wise man/woman.
Omar & Hana woke up in the middle of the night to get some water, to find Papa on his prayer mat, sobbing, making doa for his family. Feeling touched, they joined him, sobbing & making doa. Mama witnessed the whole thing from outside the room, with smile on her face & tears in her eyes.
I have a feeling Papa is getting lucky that night.
So what's the third child's name?
Laila. You’d understand if you’ve seen the episode
What's the difference between a mamak/warung makan and a restaurant? Is it that warung makan is open-air while a restaurant is enclosed with walls?
I have to do an essay assignment on a review on a restaurant and I'm stuck on how to describe one.
Today on “Cooking Whatever There Is In The Fridge”
[Dried pomodoro stir fried pasta, tomato calamari along with brocs and cauls ](https://photos.app.goo.gl/QFGTA1uegfYkA3TEA)
Ngl, looks appetizing af. The kind of meal you would eat while watching an episode of your favorite TV series.
What are we looking at?
How to sell drugs online (fast)?
Haha, my very first German series.
Slightly embarrassing story: It was rainibg today so I whipped my umbrella out. I'm kinda clumsy so i fumbled with my umbrella to close it, while walking to my class. Almost walked into a tiang, lucky I didn't lmao. Never thought this could happen in real life :'))
Had a "virtual iftar" with a bunch of friends from primary school. Because of weird time some of us can break their fast earlier. Anyways one of my classmates was unrecognizable, I don't remember her being this drop dead gorgeous but then again we haven't met for 9 years. Made me blushed when she said I was handsome. I'm going to remember that until I'm old.
Is this why you won't show your face??
No, it's because am shy
what if it's a [face filter](https://video-images.vice.com/articles/60541e99276e89009b9fdef5/lede/1616125996304-befunky-collage-14.jpeg?crop=1xw:0.9617xh;0xw,0xh&resize=1200:*)
I'd be crushed if it's true
it's okay, elon said life is a simulation anyways
Wau. Ada chan ni.
I'm shy though.
Well. Don't have any expectations. Maybe turns out you don't really like her personality or maybe you do. Just talk to her like normal for now
Hi. Does anyone know what is the expected salary for a part-time amateur graphic designer?
Not much. You can have a look at fiverr and see what the people there are charging.
That is project based pricing. I was thinking of maybe in terms of monthly payments. But thank you!
I think you would count yourself lucky if you get minimum wage. My cousin jobless for over a year look for graphic design.
Yeah the market is tough right now
Would it be cheaper if I were to go to Lowyat instead of buying it from Lazada? I'm in the market for an SSD and SATA hard drives each.
M.2 is the future.
But as far as i can tell about the same price. I prefer brick and mortar for ease of warranty.
buying stuff online is always cheaper but if you wanna try your luck, find the best value one on shopee and then compare it when you go to lowyat. Most likely you'll waste your time and you'll buy the shopee one afterwards.
No, unless you get a shop that also sells online and ask them to price match. 90% of the time physical stores in Lowyat are more expensive.
if you're buying used then yeah cheaper, but you'll have ask the seller to show [Crystal Disk Info](https://i.imgur.com/dMB78fB.png) to see how the hard drive is doing. Whether there's read/write errors and corrupt sectors etc.
If new with warranty would probably be the same, no harm looking though. Could get a slight discount if someone bought an extra new drive but has no use for it.
Sorry, I need to clarify; I meant going to the Lowyat shops and buying stuff there new.
oh lol, could try googling for the shops price list, like [StarTec](http://www.startec.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/D.I.Y%20List.pdf). could probably find it, give a call to make sure.
> graphics cards
> all sold out
mfw I went to try out baskbear coffee try try then kena buy one free one + 20% discount voucher lol
Ok fine i'll come back to use the voucher
only 15% of sabahans have registered for the vaccine whereas it's 41% for sarawakians. [Somebody said](https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2021/03/23/lack-of-internet-connectivity-slowing-vaccine-registration-in-sabah-says-academic) it was because of no internet access. Is there really such a huge disparity of internet access between Sabah and Sarawak?
Hey yall, u/hyattpotter put together an initial design for the sister sub we're working on (r/malaysians).
[What do people think of this mockup?](https://i.imgur.com/7YHlgAN.jpg)
She created the icon herself(!) and we found a nice piece of art we can license for the banner. Text is all placeholders though
That F&N need to be made into derivative logo that look like F&N but it's not F&N.
Not sure i wanna complain about the odd perspective of the banner and the minor gap between the building though, as someone grow up looking at this sort of building that's a bit weird haha
Easily fixed, thanks for the feedback!
Looks good. Tho I'm unclear what the sub is for. Is it like kopitiam section in Malaysia discord?
In short -
* All the posts on this sub have to be about Malaysia and Malaysians
* There's stuff that isn't about Malaysia but would not do well on r/relationship_advice, r/itookapicture, r/funny, r/mildlyinteresting, etc
* We're not big enough to have a [cluster of localised subs for each topic](https://www.reddit.com/r/italy/wiki/sub_italiani) the way r/italy does
* So the partner sub will be for this kind of content
* Basically all kinds of things that Malaysians want to post that aren't country-specific
Rip this sub since you're describing about half the content this sub has right now.
Yes but also no, you don't see the much less Malaysian posts that we remove under Rule 3 every single day. We're planning for those to be the main content feed until the sub is running on its own steam.
Sounds like r/CasualUK but less local?

Any idea what type of job I should apply ? What I want now is something that are not financial/accounts related, no deadline, low pressure, preferably independent (no team needed).
Some government menial worker job probably.
Very hard to get government job..
As a menial worker? Pretty sure it easy. Driver, office staff, runner, etc. Or just do grab.
Not easy to get gov job, im not bumi and i dont have cable. Grab can be an option.
Dude go for grab. It's really not a bad idea to earn some money
No offense but does such a job even exist? I can’t think of any job that would fulfill all the criteria especially the latter three. Perhaps freelancing but even that has deadlines and high pressure depending on the scale
Me myself wonder the same. Just kind of fed up with my work now that I am thinking of taking some time off and explore different career path.
OP didn't mention pays so janitor?
I think janitor also has deadline and have to work in team ? No ?
That's super vague. What's your course?
Well, my education background is accounts related and I am thinking of taking a long leave and explore a bit different path.
Well, it's pretty damn hard to suggest work that qualify for that and also paid well. But as you said, even janitor have deadline and work in team. No work in this world have no deadline.
But the easier question is: what's your hobby? Maybe you will have different luck.
Will try to explore that part(hobby) then. Have to start somewhere. Hopefully can find something..
Small PSA for dog owners, Pet Lovers Centre at 1 Mont Kiara is giving away free [Burp brand wet food](https://s.lazada.com.my/s.XrnOb), which are expiring soon but good if your doggie can eat that.
https://www.sinchew.com.my/pad/con/content_2463651.html so according to sinchiew daily, they talked to timbalan ketua polis and said that one can just cross state with miti letter and doesnt need police approval, anyone can confirm?
Confirmed, I've been crossing states using the letter without a police permit since the start of the MCO. My friend printed a fake one to visit his parents in Penang, lol.
Noo roadblock? Or they didnt ask for police permit also?
There's always a roadblock just after the toll. 90% of the time they wave you past. 9% they stop you and have a look and they wave you past. 1% stop you and question you thoroughly about where you work and what you do.
* I just spent a stupid amount of money on a fan
* That "D" brand without the blades
* It has an app!
* I'm staring at it now and wondering... how the fuck is this innovation?
* The design that worked for the last 100 years worked fine, no need for app.
* Cheaper, quieter, can tilt up and down, more windy.
* Buyers remorse x100.
Expect these thing to invade every appliances in Malaysia soon, everything will be connected to internet(of thing). I actually don't prefer "smart" thing or these internet of thing thing, no need pay extra and get useless function plus once in a while security concern, simple = better.
Not a fan of M brand? Way cheaper for basically the same stuff.
* "M" brand is from China.
* Appliances in that price range I prefer "K" brand instead.
* They are from Sekinchan.
You're buying the Apple of household appliances. What did you expect XD. My "D" vaccum has serve us well tbh, just way too expensive.
My ex-colleague swear the D brand hairdryer set is the best she ever used.
I looked at the price and almost choked on my drink.
* The "D" brand's core innovation is their[ electric motors](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfnyhoEZXhM).
* In applications where size / output matters (vacuum, hairdryers etc.), they can pump more power per unit size compared to competitors.
* Everything else is just fucking fluff.
* A standing fan doesn't have to be portable.
Lol, I've been a huge critic of 'D' brand since it started to get popular. It looks fancy and modern but loses out in functionality to all existing solutions.
[Just finished this piece](https://i.imgur.com/0ScncpP.jpg), the whole time I felt like I’d wish I was there inside the woods, under the beautiful sky and rot to death.
And the piece would still turned out great. We are nothing but a speck of dusts yet I was made to feel that I have burden the whole universe bu not being good enough.
Just watched press conference by sabri yaakob, basically no point, and in QnA just pass the questions asked by reporters to other departments. Well done. #KerajaanGagal
Had a really hectic morning with work and sinus got worse. And crypto market is like a bloodbath now. I am just glad that tmr is a Saturday.
Bloodbath? More like flash sale.
Unfortunately its not payday yet haha
My cat has been missing for a few days now. Does anyone have any tips on how to find her?
In addition to the other comment, you can tell your neighbourhood cats to tell your cat to come home. It worked once for me when my mum's cat went missing for a week.
You can read this article: "How to find a lost cat: Unique method proves to be surprisingly effective - Japan Today" https://japantoday.com/category/features/lifestyle/how-to-find-a-lost-cat-unique-method-from-japan-proves-to-be-surprisingly-effective
Hope she comes home soon!
Thought that you're joking at first, then I read the article and responses in it. May be worth a try because my cat loves to go out and not return for 2-3 days once a month.
Ooof, so sorry to hear that. A few suggestions that hopefully you will find useful:
1. Place your cat's litter box or their favourite toy, because sometimes they are able to follow the scent to find their way home. I think I read this from one of the posts here.
2. Post on Pet Finder
3. [Ask Malaysian Independent Animal Rescue to share a post about your missing kitty](https://www.facebook.com/Malaysia-Independent-Animal-Rescue-132282193542235)
4. [Ask Kucing Hilang Jumpa on FB to share a post about your missing kitty](https://www.facebook.com/groups/195968434331348)

2.8k again today. Selangor and Sarawak with 700+ cases. Kelantan in third with 400+. Sabah and Penang dropped to double digit. >2k cases for 9 days in a row.
Hang in there! Hope everything gets better for you.
My parents (61 and 55 y/o) have never bought any kind of insurance as they were not capable to do so. Now as I have started working, I am thinking maybe I should buy one (medical) for them. But they insist that it is not worth it since it will be quite expensive considering their age now.
Anyone of you has any opinion on this? Or maybe anyone knows the approximate price?
It will not cover any preexisting condition. If they had biopsies in the past for cancer, for example, it might not pay out any cancer related treatments/hospital stay payments etc. If they had taken medication for any chronic diseases, the insurance won't pay out if the diseases return because of old age.
If that age, buy Nirvana burial package or some other company package too la. Funerals are expensive man.
My mum is 63, medical insurance is 1800 a month. If you can afford it you should do it but yeah, its expensive as hell.
Damn. Thanks for the info. That's verryyy expensive.
That’s very high. How much is the coverage?
Not even all that great. Critical illness, hospitilization. Cancer not included. Up to 1 mil if i recall.
Oh wow my package is more or less the same but I’m only paying RM300 per month 😬
I mean you arent 63.
Pretty pleasantly surprised when an ex colleague of mine contacted me to ask if I'm interested in a vacancy that their workplace currently has.
I'm surprised and touched. No harm in trying I suppose
Wishing you the best of luck, nyet!
Me when one piece out this week : yay
Also me when knowing next week are golden week break : oh boi...

Fucking epic weyh this week's chapter!
“Tenant” refuse to pay rent and negotiate. They don’t have tenancy agreement and it’s rather expensive to go through the legal process to evict them
How “legal” would it be for me to cut the power and water until they leave? Force them out that way
Since there's no tenancy agreement, the property is under whose name?
Everything is under my mom’s name
Doesnt that make them squatters but i guess if there is a paper trail to you then you might be in trouble also.
Malaysia’s law is very pro tenant, police can’t do anything until they get court order
Yeah, but they aren't tenants under the law if you dont have a tenancy agreement, title or rights to the property.
Strictly speaking, totally by the book, not legal.
You're not allowed to cut water even if they owe rent or service charge. What many property management do is reduce the water flow to damn slow. They wouldn't die of thirst inside, but its freaking annoying.
Electricity I'm not sure, since you are still the account holder (presumably, since you dont have tenancy agreement it's very unlike you guys would have changed the account name over to your tenant).
If you're in an apartment/condo, you can ask the management office nicely and ask them to help partly close the tap. Usually those taps are locked in the meter cabinet and your tenant can't mess with it.
Is it legal if OP don't pay TNB on purpose and make TNB cut the power from their end? Technically OP didn't cut the power if that's the case and OP would've achieved what OP wanted.
I suppose, though TNB may take forever to cut power, especially for residential accounts. My friend in a normal double-storey terrace in USJ managed to rack up RM 5k outstanding on his TNB and they still didnt cut his juice.
Also, i think during COVID TNB is not enforcing power shut off for non-payment.
I see. Thought it'd be a good idea, because if they are not paying for rent, it'll be unfair for OP to pay their bills for them, and OP can just let TNB cut power that way.
Not a condo, terrace house and yes the account holder for electricity is still under our name. I think without power alone it’ll be enough to choke them out
This is the only other way I can think of because they’re both dumb and uncooperative to the point it makes my blood boil
Low yat is selling office home and business for rm9xx
And some shopee sellers are selling them for 3xx, for the same item.
Any one you knows why the price difference?

lowyat usually sell original copies, shopee sell bulk purchased ones, meant for large orgs usually, and not meant to be sold as single user licenses, so in a way its illegal copy lah. enforcement wise usually they dont catch, but they can deactivate the microsoft office copy u bought and u have no grounds of appealing to Microsoft if u bought shopee ones
But even tho they're in retail boxes? I thought those bulk purchased ones are volume license right?
Shopee sell keys for less than RM20 also got, but that one don't use for office la. Home use ok.
I bought so many of those Shopee CD keys for Windows and Office, not once I had any deactivation with those. Buy them je.
The box retail copy that one show the BSA the box also ok liao.
For home use, i am also..... sailing the seven seas like a hero
But since this one is for office use, I dont wanna see the day when my head detaches from my body come.
> The box retail copy that one show the BSA the box also ok liao.
Apa tu? Tak paham
So long you can show police the box of the software installed should be OK. If they find it "fake" they can read the reciept and charge the reseller for duping customers lo.
As far as you are concerned, you did the right thing in buying boxed software and you have been duped la, konon.
lol i see, aye thanks mang for sharing
Haha sailing the seven seas - that's quite a creative way to say it hehe
the retail boxes are shown on shopee right? means they're just for show.
Yes volume license
Oh I see. Makes sense. Thanks mang

Good news! This is the cause i can support cus that's disgusting as hell.
They are actually very on the ball, and started advocating to various avenues, the moment they heard about this.
It’s a societal issue too, we got to stop this reward vs punishment, way of life.
Can i make report on something that happened 11-13 years ago? I need to witness that school burns.
I'm sorry you had tu go through that. It's truly disgusting that they cab even justify it using religion.
Yes, you can. Call them if you want to clarify, somethings if needed.

Sometimes I feel like it sucks that the notice period in Malaysia is 2-3 months. So after signing an offer letter by a new employer, there's a chance that the new employer can still rescind within the 2-3 month period, whereas in the US, the standard notice period is 2 weeks.
It's to protect employees lah.
Company want to fire my ass, at least I have a few months to look for another job.
It actually protects the company more. Cause if you're a talent, you will likely find jobs easily. But a company will need time to hire someone who can play your role.
If the company really wanna fire you, they dont need to fulfil the 3 months notice if they fire you under disciplinary actions.
Seriously, wait till you have experience American style firing where the security is right beside you making sure you pack and leave the premises immediately, then you tell me notice period is NOT to protect employees.
Disciplinary action? Talk to anyone who work in HR in Malaysia corporations lah, and see how much paperwork and procedure they have to go through to protect the company. It's not that easy.
And if you're really a "talent", new company will pay in lieu of notice period. If new company reluctant to pay, then may be you are not that "talent" eh? /s
I worked 3 years in HK and 1 year in SG, notice period is 2 weeks for both places.
When I tell them 2 to 3 months is standard in Malaysia, everyone is surprised cause it kills hiring competition. But okay, you keep believing its for your benefit.
Yup, hope you notice the more business friendly a market, the shorter the notice period.
In Germany, where union is strong, if you work 20 years in a company, company has to give 7 months notice period to fire you. But employees only need to give 1 month notice period to quit.
Yeah, Germany is very uncompetitive. /s
err, I don't see how your asymmetrical notice period make any sense in this discussion.
Definitely depends on the market condition and the job? For most high paying job, a long notice period is to protect the company so that they can find replacement on time(as high paying replacement is very hard to find)? Most my friends in high paying jobs have very long notice period, and none of them wants the long notice period as it makes it harder to switch company?
From my experience working in the UK, the higher the pay of the job, the longer the notice period, so I do think in many cases the long notice period is to protect the company more than it is to protect the employee.
The more talented the talent pool the shorter the notice period?
The more successful the country the shorter the notice period?
The more competitive the job market the shorter the notice period?
But hei, if Malaysians wanna remain stuck in a rut.
Agreed. Even if the employer really hated you and wanted to get rid of you asap, they'd need to compensate you. At least you don't end up broke ass on the street jobless all of a sudden.
That's why over here it's really more on the employers will try their best to mess with you to force you to resign on your own, because it's actually hard for them to get rid of you.
Depends on company policy. Notice period can differ based on whether you’re confirmed or not.
From what ive seen, unconfirmed had a 2 week notice and for confirmed, 1 month notice, higher up the totem pole and its 2 months notice. Really hated that bit as it made it obvious I was teaching the dude who was going to replace me. Which made me only answer questions asked of me. Nothing more.
One thing that I really don't understand is why are some people so kerek.
Dude the staff might have forgotten to explain to you something, but still there is no need to scold them. It's just small matter right?
And in their defense, they didn't see the customer wearing their staff tag, so jangan la pegi marah diorang
tell me about it. a friend constantly complains about the customer service of a particular restaurant yet she keeps going back there. oi, tak suka then dun go la. go liow then want to kbkb make noise.. wtf knn
Hahaha first time seeing kaubekaubu initialled take my up vote
Do you know any cheap walk-in gyms in KL? Preferably in Bangsar/ KL Sentral /KLCC? might consider further places as long as its within kl

XTremeHardCore Gym is freaking crowded wei. Just fyi 🥲 But they have a separate space for ladies.
great tip 👍🏽
Thank you! helped me plenty
Mcm tak ada. Gym semua kena membership.
Ade but the ones advertised online/on google search are the membership ones. I dont drive unfortunately so I dont really know the small gyms around my area
I had [rice with cauli carrot bokchoy mushroom and black fungus stir fry and vege curry](https://i.imgur.com/TozNE1v.jpg) for lunch today.
Yum. What made you start a plant-based diet? :)
Got to know a mutual friend who’s a vegan and she passionately shared her thoughts on the lifestyle with me so I took a 30 day challenge and it wasn’t that hard so I just continued.
Interested! Do you monitor your daily protein intake?
No not really but I do snack on nuts and sprinkle seeds on foods
Don’t go crazy on nuts if you’re maintaining weight k. They’re generally higher in fats and carbs > protein. 10 cashews is already 90 cals. 🥵
I also thought about going 100% just vege for awhile but never thought of chap fan being able to do that - what's the difference for you? And is it any different from say makaning salad 100% of the time?
