He’s in talks to host the Hunger Games.

No_Name_James_Taylor

In reality I think the dude is mostly excited to give the kid a real challenge, but the show went overboard on a kid a bit young to appreciate the incredible opportunity that was offered. With like ~10% "time to watch this kid cry"

Philosophile42

https://youtu.be/HhrvwHrceRg Kid was happy to play him. He was upset that he ran out of time.

Now I'm happy crying.

That's what I meant.

isnortmiloforsex

It was clickbait for sure

No_Name_James_Taylor

It was an edit that added the music and the kid crying, on retrospect. Funny meme though

AlexanderHamilton04

"when u call ur older brother to beat up ur bully" ?? What utopia are you living in? (Calls older brother...) "Great, now I'm going to get beat up by a bully AND my older brother."

isnortmiloforsex

Lol I payed my brother by doing his homework so idk if my situation got any better after I was saved from an ass whooping

V_es

Max Galkin is a very nice guy actually. He is a life long host of dozens of shows in Russia, a very talented impressions comedian and voice actor.

isnortmiloforsex

Yeah got that but damn that man had killer intent when he said ANATOLY KARPOVA

V_es

Anatoliya Karpova- Russian has grammatical case, words are changed according to how they are used in the sentence- 7 variations depending on what intention for word is (Who? Whom? Who’s?, ect. Each intention will change the spelling of the word) + every word has gender which changes how words are used (husband and wife have slightly different last names) and how grammatical case will apply to them + past/present/future also changes words. His name is Anatoly Karpov, but the host is inviting Anatolya Karpova.

isnortmiloforsex

Damn. Glad I learned spanish instead

OneWayorAnother11

Yes, but why does he have Gary Oldman's haircut from The Fifth Element?

My thoughts, exactly. It is the sane haircut, and therefore the same evil feel.

Google En Passant

UN16783498213

Chess is a complicated strategic game; almost as complicated and strategic as trying to convince your friend to Google "En Passant" after you used the move.

Supergaz

Lmao, people never believe that this is a real thing

FlighingHigh

Also castling.

Supergaz

That one I experience most people know, know. Though the specifics of right and left casting are always muddy

FlighingHigh

Also the catch that the rook and king can't have moved yet

Supergaz

And that the kings path must not be threatened. Not even sure if it is the same for the rook. I guess it is mostly for the long castle.

En_Sabah_Nur

And people who think that when they're down to their king in an endgame, moving 13 times without mate is a draw. What kind of dumbass prison rules bullshit is this?

poopin_for_change

Isn't that the rule? A stalemate if a true mate cannot be reached? Oh no, i have to go learn something. Please excuse me, brb. Edit: Google says 50 moves without a piece being captured results in a draw. My chess app has some explaining to do

Logasvadek

Puzzleheaded-Work908

I'd like to imagine that the boss healthbar and souls music aren't edited in. That's just how Karpov rolls everywhere he goes.

SaltyEmotions

Didn't you know? That's how all chess World Champions go. When Magnus Carlsen walks in, you hear boss music and see the healthbar pop up. They can only turn it off when they aren't playing chess or aren't going to play chess.

Semmlbroesel

Not a reference I thought I'd see here, well done.

more-random-words

it's like a reverse Dunning-Kruger... this kid isn't old enough to understand this is just an interesting way to have a guest appearance by the grandmaster on a TV show but he is competent enough at chess to understand Karpov will completely fuck his shit up bursting into tears and crying "mummy" is the absolute correct response for anyone (except maybe half a dozen people in the world) if they find themselves having to play Karpov at chess

vorin

It's edited for comedic effect. He only started crying after playing against his idol and said mummy after the host asked who was with him.

PrincipledProphet

Well ... this certainly won't do - *redditors reading the truth*

FerrousFelix

He played a really good Nimzo-Indian against Karpov too, losing on time because the host kept asking him questions and shit.

[Yes and the clip above is cut out of order](https://youtu.be/WQOLCo-XYA0)

Kaon_Particle

Nice to know the kid was actually fine/happy to see the guy.

undo_msunderstndng

Yeah, IIRC the kid was happy to meet him because he learned from Karpov's books. Then since they were playing a fast game for TV, the kid, who was 3 years old at the time and didn't make any real mistakes in a chess game against one of the best chess players ever, was told he was running out of time, panicked, and cried. Because he was 3 years old, in front of a ton of people. Karpov handled the situation ok, he offered the kid a draw because he was running out of time.

Kaiylu

Well the translated captions are fucking worthless lmao. "well, the tattoo itself, I understood vishnu, you, you say, are you an adult already to be" Okay. What the fuck are you saying.

yourking999

I also tried to read along and it really seems like the captions are just straight up not translating anything properly or have just lost everything in translation. Watching about 5 min in and reading a translated sentence that the captions provide and I’m just thinking to myself “what the fuck does that even mean?!”

TeraFlint

icyhot000

Im bummed they didn’t play the evil final boss music in real life

tissuecat

This kid is out there playing chess legends at 3 in front of cheering crowds. I can’t even remember anything that happened to me before age 5.

thegoodyinthehoody

He did so well, in a studio that size with a huge audience and a famous grandmaster, the kid was punching above his age to not just burst into tears before the game even started. But throw in losing the game (something I’m sure he’s not used to!!!) and not being able to be right beside his mum, the kid is an emotional superhero being able to hold back the tears, he must be so overwhelmed

PsychoChick005

For the record, the clip is cut out of order. The kid was happy to see Karpov but cried when he lost because, y’know, he’s a 3 year old

Aggressive_Sprinkles

And because it's chess, lmao. Such a frustrating game to lose.

Cosmic-Kangaroo

I’ve downloaded, deleted and downloaded the chess.com app about 200 times in the last 6 months and this is not an exaggeration.

Dr_Rjinswand

I am here because I just lost twice to Nelson. I've beaten him previously but I just hate the way the bots instantly reply with their move (which is usually a check) and I tried to crush my phone in my hand. I'll go back shortly.

R4D33

I've laughed so hard at this post for 3 minutes straight at this point. I feel bad for the kid but damn... ^*MUMMY.*

xaiolongbitch

You’ll be happy to know it was [edited](https://youtu.be/HhrvwHrceRg). The kid was crying after being overwhelmed with emotions when played and lost against his hero and was asked who he came with to distract him. The kid shook it off and was a good sport, given a medal and signed book by the grandmaster and spent some more time talking chess with him after the fact Edit: just goes to show how drastically a bit of tricky editing can change our perception of things. Stay skeptical folks, this is secretly wholesome :)

FatExplodingPig

Aw thank you!

Saith_Cassus

Can you imagine being Karpov and losing to a 3-year-old? Like, I realize he's probably better than him, but also, just think of the devastation of losing to a kid who can still show how old he is on one hand on national/international television. I wouldn't be ashamed to get my ass handed to me by a grandmaster, even if he's 3, but I'm also not the world champion of chess.

vinecti

I think it's probably worse if you lose to a 20-30 year old chess player, rather than a 3 or 80 year old one. In the latter case, you could argue that the 80 year old grandmaster of chess is, well, a grandmaster of chess, and if you lose to a 3 year old, you just argue that his skills are beyond human comprehension and will live to be the best chess player the world has ever seen. Edit: wording

spasticity

Karpov did lose to a 13 year old Magnus Carlsen

MisterRominade

Yeah but that was Magnus fucking Carlsen

Mesadeath

What a cool goddamn name. Magnus.

punzakum

There is a strongest man competitor with the name Magnus von Magnuson which translates to "Magnus, son of Magnus" and it is just one of the coolest names on planet earth Edit: Magnus ver Magnusson

Euclid_of_Alexandria

Even better, ver means "son of". So he is Magnus, the son of Magnusson, who is himself the son of Magnus

PoorDawg

oh man I hope there's just a string of Magnus going back a thousand years

ZeAthenA714

In that world there's also Hafthor Bjornsson, of GoT fame, which roughly translates to Ocean Thunder, son of Bear. Can't get more metal than that.

DerGregorian

It’s ver not von

punzakum

Thanks for the correction!

Tall_Viking

His name is Magnús Ver Magnússon. Ver is a middle name in Icelandic with no particular meaning as a name. The word Ver could be used as a verb for "he defends." In Iceland we don't have surnames, but rather have our father's name as our last name. So his father's name is Magnús, making him Magnússon.

YeetMemez

Don’t let this guy talk it down. I agree that Magnus is a cool goddamn name. Just to say it-Magnus. That’s a suave muthafuckin name. Then you look at him, he’s as handsome as the devil himself. And intelligent af! Bois I think I have a man crush on our boy Magnus.

igneousink

>Magnus Carlsen i just googled him and a crush seems like a reasonable response to him no matter your gender

someurbanNDN

I'll take all yalls word for it!! he sounds a m a z i n g. . lol

Magick_Mind

MAGNUS THE RED DID NOTHING WRONG!

De_immortalesloki

Where? Can I get a clip

eattheirdead

It is the first result for a Google search of the phrase “magnus beats karpov”.

who_is_mrx

Which is exactly his point about losing to a 3 year old. The kid he lost to in that case ended up being fucking Magnus mother fucking Carlsen.

Yum-z

And that 13 year old lived to be the best chess player the world has ever seen, inventing and popularizing what many consider to be the strongest possible opening in chess the double bong cloud

DesertofBoredom

Gary chess is still #1 of all time.

Yahlunna

I mean, Magnus Carlsen (current chess wc) won the World Champion title at his 22. Hes considered the player of a century, and for some (me included) the best player to ever play the game. And Kaspárov won the WC even younger. No shame to lose agaisnt the younger generations. A 3 yo would be extremely weird to lose against though, dude probably still had problem holding his shit on the bed, you probably cant learn a lot of chess theory at that age. The kid in this video lost just because he didnt know how to manage time, he probably learned a very important lesson about time as a weapon from this match lol.

AnnihilationOrchid

The 3-year-old from the clip is already 7 by now I think. He still doesn't have FM yet I don't think, but to be fair he's a prodigy. Christopher Yoo for example the youngest person in history to get a FM title he was 9. These two if they continue their carriers, probably they could even be GM by the time they're 17 maybe. Sergey Karjakin, was GM learnt chess at the age of 5 and was a GM by the age of 12. It's absurd levels we're talking here.

kabob95

If you check his [FIDE page](https://ratings.fide.com/profile/34285520/chart) not only not a FM but has been stagnant for the last 3 year around 1000-1100 so while incredibly impressive that he can even play at such an age he is nowhere near being the next GM or CM for that matter. Again incredible skill at his age but nothing unseen before.

Yahlunna

Thats surprisingly """low""" considering i was arround 1200 when I stopped playing chess arround 16 and im an absolute idiot. I mean the kid started playing at age 3, thats massive.

AnnihilationOrchid

Interesting. Maybe he went onto being something more productive, like a brain surgeon at age 10. LOL Or maybe he discovered pokemon... in that case he's screwed.

iUsedtoHadHerpes

To be fair, he had already accomplished more in the world of chess before preschool than most people do in their entire lives.

grandoz039

Well, 80 year old people aren't actually that good at chess. IIRC 20-40 are actually the best years, after that your mind loses its edge, plus you have more difficulty keeping up with the innovation. And burnout or loss of passion or simply not willing to invest so much time into the game are significant factors as well.

ptrapezoid

It's more that you lose the stamina. Chess matches are intense at the highest level.

Otontin

[Robert Sapolsky, who studies stress in primates at Stanford University, says a chess player can burn up to 6,000 calories a day while playing in a tournament, three times what an average person consumes in a day.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/27593253/why-grandmasters-magnus-carlsen-fabiano-caruana-lose-weight-playing-chess%3fplatform=amp)

Gandalfthebrown7

Welp my lanky ass should stop playing chess 2-3 hours a day then.

XtendedImpact

Don't worry, it's mostly from using their brains so you're probably in no danger ^^^^^sorry

Gandalfthebrown7

Ouch

2rfv

>6,000 cal/day This doesn't pass the smell test for me. Hopefully someone will come along and provide further insight.

AnnihilationOrchid

People feel amazed when they play against one. Like Kasparov vs Magnus Carlsen when he was 12. I play against probably kids all the time since my rating is low, and it's just fun.

KToff

But he didn't because >I never go easy :)

Pelin0re

Karpov was never under the slightest possibility of losing. The kid had the level of a pretty average chess player (source: his russian elo page. According to it he hasn't progressed much in the last years), the only noteworthy thing was his age. Any GM player would have crushed him with queen odds (playing without the queen).

Mornarben

Wow I just checked his profile and I would destroy this kid. Except I'm just an idiot because I'm 17 years older than him? I say I should be getting the exact same treatment

sinsquaretriangle

Ok. We will treat you like a three year old if that's what you want!

MichalWHL

Apparently, there is 11 yo in Slovakia who managed to draw with Karpov. https://www.romea.cz/en/news/world/chess-player-age-11-is-a-romani-talent-from-slovakia-who-is-defeating-adult-competitors

the-effects-of-Dust

I cried wholesome tears watching the full video. Thank you for sharing.

cloud3321

Reminds me of that korean variety show where they had a 30 year old guy along with a few elementary school kids who danced to some girl group dance. They (the guy in particular) nailed the performance. Though everyone in the audience was laughing at him for being an old dude dancing to some girly songs.

Animal31

The real thing is adorable he's crying because he wasnt paying attention to his clock time Karpov offered him a draw and he declined

smokebreak

Kid had a great day playing this legend. I wonder what the kid is up to today since the show is from 2016.

hugglesthemerciless

> just goes to show how drastically a bit of tricky editing can change our perception of things *laughs in Drive to Survive*

cupid_xv

'it was edited' what do you mean? the boss healthbar and items aren't edited that's just what happens when this guy shows up at places

far_in_ha

Thanks for this.....the original version is much bettwr than the edited one! The kid had the time of his life

wakeupwill

That was just so incredibly endearing. I just wanted to give the kid a hug.

MontRouge

Actual video is not that bad.

xiemieboi

Yea a friend of mine watched this an he said that the family kept on bragging about how good in chess he is

Zerothekitty

I mean he probably was very good, for his age. The kid was set up to fail.

cachewoo

He was. He was 3 in this clip and played a much better game than I or likely anyone in the comments could have played.

EdwardBigby

He was offered a draw several times and given a medal and celebrated regardless. I wouldn't exactly call that set up to fail

MACHO_MUCHACHO2005

Yeah Karpov did that like how a you will go easy on your younger brother at a game so they can like it. Pretty sure if he wanted to win he would have done it by checkmate instead of by time.

hygsi

This is edited but he cried at the end of the match when he lost because time ran out, they later got him to solve a match and he did very quickly, he is a good player regardless of his age.

bladeshot

He lost just by time. He is really good player.

nostalgic_angel

“I make chess pieces out of ribs of those who I defeated….. Your bone is small, not even worthy for a rook.” Said the mighty grandmaster, as he displayed his trophies. “I am here to avenge my father.” The young hero replied. “ Your father is weak, you are next” the grandmaster calmly said. (A while later, the young boy appears to be losing) “Death by chess, death by chess, death by chess!” This line was chanted by the crowd repeatedly when the young boy is losing, they await a gruesome execution.

Puppy-Zwolle

Weird thing is, the kid is not afraid. He's just meeting his hero. Even without the match he would have wanted his mommy.

er1end

he is not crying in fear, this is edited and cut. he cries because Karpov kicked his ass with a vengance and had no regard for his young age. kid cried because he got his ass handed to him.

vedant0712

That's the most Russian looking kid ever

Caluak

They had a good game but Karpov ended up winning on time, he would have won anyways but that’s when the kid actually started crying

For those that don’t know Misha is a chess prodigy and like 3 years old at the time. I’m pretty sure he lost on time towards the end. He cried when he realized his time ran out.
