Karl last night
By - caliborntravel
The problem with being inside the fog line is that it's hard to know if there's sunny weather outside the fog line. And had I known that, I'd probably take a little ride, because yesterday was gloomy a.f. :-(
I need to check the fog apps more.
*cries in Outer Richmond*
It's like regular crying, except instead of tears, your entire face just fogs up and you have to put on a jacket. ;-)
This is so true. When I lived in the Outer Richmond I would take the bus from work and see the wall of fog beginning in the Inner Richmond. Summers were always foggy and it was always cold.
Now I live in the East Bay and a lot, if not most, days are sunny and warmish - sometimes straight up hot.
Yet my old roomies all still have no idea! When we hang out or go camping they’re all bundled up and talking about how cold it is.
What fog apps are out there?
Mr. Chilly app breaks down fog by neighborbood. Has worked great for me
Karl app, it’s not just for fog, it’s a hyper-local weather app specifically for SF. It shows weather and AQI by neighborhood
Their used to be an app called hoodie weather. It was great. Anything for android?
does the Karl app give fog elevation and fog elevation predictions? It's always kinda a crap shoot if I want to get up on Mount Tam what elevation I should go to for the coolest long exposures.
It has humidity and visibility and suggested clothing by neighborhood, but only for the pro version. I do not see fog specific details.
I use Dark Sky and just punch in whatever neighborhood I want to check the weather at.
Really? Go to Fog.today and it's always easy to know what's going on. Plus after a few years, you begin to learn the overall factors and can read the tea leaves, so to speak
No disrespect, but I'm surprised this is the top comment. The tools exist.
I use [Fog.today](https://Fog.today). I just don't use it consistently, because my experience over the summer has been -- it's been really foggy almost everywhere. But lately that's changing.
Not sure what overall factors exist -- three year dweller here. I just generally scan the horizon to see if I see any faraway sunlit buildings, but even that can be deceptive, because if the fog is thick enough, it's blotted out.
Do you have the Karl app? It’s great
Is Karl app better than windy.com?
Fog.today is the solution
No need for an app
Windy is great. Super useful during the wildfires too
Thanks fog for keep sf cool.
Very nice. Reminded me of /r/Cinemagraphs!
Any idea why the fog pattern was so crazy yesterday? Did it have to do with the heat we had two days before yesterday?
Yup. Long time resident. Usually a 3-4 day series of super-warm days are followed by the fog. The fog is the city's way of cooling it down. Usually in Sept-Oct, you have a longer break of more warm days than fog days.
But I usually start carrying layers, once a day or 2 of heat have come through. Layer Game + 10!
Possibly, [this](https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/79119/another-foggy-day-in-san-francisco) is NASA’s explanation of how SF fog works
SF seems to have had almost no summer and lots of fog and I am almost certain that was due to higher than usual inland temperatures sucking the fog over SF.
I tried showing my boyfriend what it looks like when fog comes over the bay area like that (SF native) and he gasped and said "ITS LIKE GOD HIT A FAT VAPE"
It looked incredible from the oakland hills
Reminds me of the movie: "The Mist"
Oh lawd he coming
Is it locals or transplants that don’t like Karl? I’ve heard way more locals mention Karl or Karla as a thing than any transplant I know.
I grew up here and no one I know calls it Karl. Always thought it was a transplant thing
That's how a lot of stuff works. It doesn't exist and then it does. Like the SF Giants.
What happened with the Giants?
They were in New York but now they are here. Transplants.
Ah, I guess 1958 is not terribly long ago.
It’s definitely a transplant thing. Although some of the younger locals are calling it Karl because they did not know.
Karl the fog was started by a transplant back in 2010 by opening a Twitter account with name, and ever since has gathered a large following. I myself am a born and raised San Francisco local, and we would rather not have our fog called Karl, simply because it was named by a transplant. I believe the transplant has moved on, since COVID became a thing. I believe he or she moved away, since there have not been any recent posts since the shelter in place.
The term originated by a transplant and I honestly don’t know anybody who is actually from SF who calls it that. Definitely just a transplant thing
I’m local, and the first time I heard “Karl,” I didn’t know what they were talking about. Then she mentioned the fog, and I made the connection. “She” was a transplant from Michigan.
I love calling the fog Karl because it annoys people.
Please ask Karl to come to San Jose for a couple days.
wow. amazing. almost looks like a tsunami slowly enveloping SF or something.
Wow, is this realtime?
It’s about a minute of recording for this time lapse
Looks like rotor clouds.
“Nom nom nom” - Karl
References to Karl and Frisco are inversely proportional.
That is, the more likely you are to say "Karl," you are less likely to say "Frisco" and vice versa.
This whole Karl thing is dumb as fuck and people need to knock it off
I'm sure to be down voted, but as a 4th gen San Franciscan, naming the fog gets on my damn nerves!! You rarely hear a native call it that. Then people get uptight if they hear the word Frisco, which has been used since the Wild West days.
This is awesome. Thank you for sharing!
fog - not karl!
Noooo nobody calls it Karl.
It’s weird to watch a phenomenon like “Karl the fog” happen in real time. It precisely pinpoints when someone moved to the city. When I moved to the city there was a radio station called The City and people were apoplectic because it died that year. Herb Cain was still alive and people made fun of him because he had been writing for decades, and I’d still see the Twins strutting around Union Square.
I find “Karl the fog” to be idiotic but I guess it really just matters when you showed up here.
Herb and the Brown twins. Never ran into Herb, but I've seen the sisters. It was a different city. This "Karl" thing though, it's just some twitter stupidity. You don't own the fog - you can't claim that for yourself. A symptom of the increasing arrogance around here.
I don't use the word "apoplectic" enough. Good word.
I’ve definitely heard people call it Karl
Doesnt make it right.
Never really understood the whole I hate the thing you like.
Noooobody cares what people call it
Gotta love it when people make sweeping generalizations and definitive conclusions about other people simply because of their perceived self-superiority derived from trivial differences in the way each party responds to cultural trends. It's about as annoying as pretentious rants (like this comment).
Go back to Ohio.
Also, nothing wrong with Ohio.
People who call it "Karl the fog" are generally not locals and are more of the instagram influencer wannabe type.
only Kooks and tourists call it Karl.
Imagine gatekeeping on a name for the local fog
Hella peeps I know in Frisco call it Karl
Karl’s not as fun when he gets that high.
karl, hah, haven't heard that for a while
Newly-settled transplants: "Why does this closet smell like mold?"
Is that the steam rising off the fresh human shit covering your city?
Not Bernal lol
Haha, I think that’s Noe to the left at the fog line
Fine, hi mission! I was born and raised in Bernal so you would think I would be better at this. Thanks for playing along with me, amazing shot btw!
Haha thank you! And yeah, definitely Mission
Well I suppose I am getting up there. Grandpa was a NY Giants fan and we used to listen to SF Giants games. My csb.
