Book Recommendations - Dark Scifi
By - chuwii2
Annihilation - Jeff Van Der Mere
Dark Matter - Blake Crouch
Both books i cannot recommend enough. Dark Matter is the more striaght forward of the two, it reads easier. Annihilation, if you really let it, can make you FEEL weird. It sort of sits on you in a really unique way. The first part of the book (maybe first 50 pages) is hard to make sense of easily, but if you stick with it, it all comes together more clearly, and it ends up being a super eerie/awesome read. Again, both are fantastic, and I think are highly enjoyable in their own ways. Happy to expand on the premise of each if you so desire. Cheers!
Most of Alistair Reynolds stuff - The Revelation Space books specifically
Iain M Banks "Culture" stuff particularly, but most of his novels aren't generally "fun"
Non Culture Banks "Against a Dark Background" is pretty dark.
In Her Name. Definitely darker themes. It mixes scifi and fantasy elements, but lands firmly on the scifi side of things.
Scratch Monkey by Stross. free online. "The guards aren't wilfully cruel; it's just that, as far as they're concerned, I don't exist. When I lost my eyes I lost my humanity."
Short story - Minla's Flower's
Kloos *Frontlines* is pretty dark; military scifi though.
Greg Bear *Forge of God*.
First half of *Seveneves*
I love dark scifi and wish there was more. All these happy endings are depressing.
Yeah +1 to happy endings sucking
Thought of another one - Watts' *The Freeze Frame Revolution.* Blindsight is a bit dark as well, but not overly so.
