Dam Nat Geo geo pay walling :o

easyj86

Nat Geo does a ton of original pieces at least.

Drumlin

You know Fox owns them, right?

mrzurch

And I believe Disney owns them both

real_LNSS

It's like feudalism but with companies.

Alldaybagpipes

The NatGeo county swears fealty to the Fox Duchess, vassalized by the Disney Kingdom. Between high taxes (paywalls) and Misinformation revolts and improper subjugation of the Jedi people, the kingdom struggles to maintain credibility as it strives to make the leap to empire status.

FrostPDP

r/CrusaderKings checking in.

Alldaybagpipes

Nailed it

TheShishkabob

Nah, Disney picked up a ton of properties from Fox but "Fox" generally makes people think of the news empire that still very much exists independently.

fanofallo

They did in fact pick up nat geo in their fox acquisitions though

Individual_Lies

Have they resurrected Nat Geo as it was meant to be? Or is it still crap wrapped in crap?

pingpingkiwi

*China owns both

PrestigiousGuava

You mean Disney?

gheiminfantry

This comment is underrated.

loptopandbingo

They've always been owned and paid for by shitty companies. Check every ad in them going back half a century or more. Monsanto, Dow Chemical, Caterpillar, Union Carbide, Alcoa, Lockheed Martin, a whole cadre of heavy hitters.

MacNuttyOne

yeah, that was most disappointing and irritating.

Dirty_Hertz

Thanks!

timetoremodel

grabitoe

Thanks for the link, interesting read!

MacNuttyOne

big thanks for this link

MumrikDK

"TRTWorld" confused me as an MMA fan. Sounds like a steroid dealership.

gheiminfantry

Thank you for the link 👍.

quasikoz

So literally Middle Earth??

Jumbledcode

Probably Númenor.

Novel_Ad_1178

Ding ding ding

InquisitiveIdealist

Ah yes, the sunken continent of Beleriand

BerserkBoulderer

"Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day." Probably best we leave it be.

MrBanana421

Yeah, but are we really gonna take the word of a pyrotechnics nut with a penchant for the pipe-weed. He's supposed to have walked around ancient caves but can't even walk into a great hall without his walking staff.

Blayno-

What do you think all the pipe-weed is for… pain management. Couple puffs on that sucker and old Gandy could run a marathon

cnnrduncan

IIRC canonically pipe weed is just really strong tobacco, not cannabis.

Blayno-

Native Americans have used tobacco as medicine for a while. I’m sure Gandalf has met a few in his travels… “…in 1934 Fernando Ocaranza summed up the medicinal uses of tobacco in Mexico before 1519 as antidiarrhoeal, narcotic and emollient; he said that tobacco leaves were applied for the relief of pain, used in powdered form for the relief of catarrh and applied locally to heal wounds and burns.6 There are many other reports of medicinal uses of tobacco by precolumbian Native Americans, but the foregoing list is sufficient to indicate the wide usage6,9,13 and to explain why travellers wished to take the plants and seeds back to Europe.” Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1079499/

cnnrduncan

The fact that native Americans applied tobacco leaf powder to wounds to heal them doesn't mean that smoking tobacco will act as pain relief.

rydogsland

The fact that Native Americans applied tobacco leaf powder **HAS NO EFFECT ON GANDALF WHATSOEVER** lol it’s Middle-Earth ffs

Blayno-

I mean in this fantasy situation we’ve found ourselves in the native Americans have also blown the smoke into ears for pain relief of ear infections

Such-Landscape3943

As long as the dwarves don't try to dig down to it...

yasenfire

Dwarf settlements tend to regularly dig down into hell.

Artemicionmoogle

Yeah they better be careful not to drill for core samples too deep. I don't know what a Balrog could get up to in this day with our tech but I wouldn't want to find out.

Such-Landscape3943

Never mind the Balrog, that's what the Jaegers are for. Imagine what the dwarves could do with tunnel boring machines, spray concrete reinforcement, carbide drillheads and mining explosives.

Artemicionmoogle

Well now I think we may have a decent story to tell combining all of those elements lol

Such-Landscape3943

Belegaer Rim 2049 couldn't be worse than the Hobbit films.

outerproduct

You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad dum...

Infinityexile

Clowns?

1-2-switch

Strike the earth brother. It's Circus time.

CiferLu86

Worse, Juggalaos.

dandaman910

Ok just if you ever visit NZ don't tell this joke . You will be groaned back to where you came from.

Eluvyel

Maybe they can groan him back to Actually New Zealand.

RaifRedacted

Where is actual new Zealand? Actually curious what you mean.

HolIerer

It’s above Old Zealand

bigwillyman7

Bingo

KyleGrave

You can dance your way there from Old Zealand

durbly

New Z land. NO SENSE OF HUMOUR.

trad_animator

"New Zed Land? Wut?" Commonwealth English joke.

PM_ME_PAIN_PILLS

"Why? Why zed?" Stupid Rush joke.

[deleted]

Denmark?

TheBucher

Netherlands actually although denmark has similar sounding name

PureLock33

New Ayeland?

HolycommentMattman

Why does the new Polish navy have glass-bottomed boats? To see Old Zealand.

horrificmedium

[When you say glass-bottom boat…](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=glass+bottom+boat)

darwin_thornberry

Can you dance your way there?

Talos_the_Cat

If you want to...

Genius-Imbecile

And if your friends don't dance?

Talos_the_Cat

Well they might just not be friends of yours!

AzizKhattou

Ah, the safety dance

nevus_bock

“Are you an idiot?”

Glaive83

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealand

chatte__lunatique

That's the Danish one. New Zealand was named after the Dutch province of Zeeland.

Saltmetoast

Is that where Batman Ave gets its name?

dilbot8

Sort of. John Batman was an early expolorer.

binzoma

it was called batmania fora little while. I busted laughing when I found the plaque

Leather_Boots

Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer that was famous for his charting of parts of Australia and discovering NZ from a European stand point, as the Maori were already there.

humanRR

Which was named after seals

Benjamin244

is this a joke I'm not getting?

amitjain679

That was funny.

cdsvoboda

As a geologist, I have news for everybody: all continental crust on Earth was part of an ancient supercontinent.

jettim76

… five times, at least.

PloppyTheSpaceship

Was going to say something similar, though I'm a GIS guy.

RChristian123

We knew about that before though, right

roger_dodgger

Yes, this is not news. Look at OP's post history and you'll see it's just a spam account. Downvote and move on

normie_sama

I swear we see this headline once a year.

Mister_Vandemar

It’s always in the last place you look.

Turbulent_Ad1667

Settles the bet... NZ are elves living above the dwarves.

WombatSwindle

'ahem' DIBS!

CornerFlag

DI... ah, shit.

Safebox

Zealandia, this isn't new information.

Ninjalion2000

This isn’t new, Zealandia has been a thing for a few years now.

Toad32

Zealandia was rediscovered in 2017. Its considered the 8th continent, and is essentially just a very shallow sea base near New Zealand has a very large square footage.

Luxpreliator

[Zealandia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealandia) Google autocorrected me when nothing came up for zoolandia. Should be the name of the sequel to zootopia. A microcontinent that may have broken off another one hundreds of millions of years ago. It is half as thick as normal continental crust and twice as thick as oceanic crust.

LVMagnus

No, silly. Zoolandia is where Zoolanders comes from.

cartoonist498

What is this? A continent for ants?

BloodyLlama

From what I was reading it was first identified in 1895. We just didn't have enough data to really prove it until now.

diggy96

It’s not really the 8th continent though. That’s just what the media wants to call it. In reality there is many more continents that make up the earth crust. We just focus on the major 7 because that’s where most folk live. If an 8th is to be added the Indian plate should be it.

Such-Landscape3943

Yeah but if go for the right one, you can say you were into it when it was still underground.

Who had Cthulhu for 2021?

Kobrag90

Nah, i jad him in 2020, brilliant in bed but very preachy. I mean, astronomy in interesting but he kept going on and on about the stars being right.

tabovilla

Not in my bingo card The 4 horsemen however..

inkyllama

The closest landmass to R'lyeh is probably New Zealand, so it's on my bingo card.

HitoriPanda

I already won with "ocean on fire" Cthulhu needs to wait until next year.

Agreed. Crazy thing is the entire article is in the source. Makes me want to try an extension that only shows what's contained in "

goddeadis

Atlantis!

i-opener

Atlantis is in/around the Atlantic Ocean. Lemuria/Mu would be the counterpart for the Pacific Ocean.

spaceforcerecruit

Lemuria is the Indian Ocean, not the Pacific.

moss-n-choss

“Lemurian” is a whacky religion of people who think aliens live inside of Mt Shasta in California

BallOfSpaghetti

I thought the lemurians were the race of aliens in the mountain

funbar1

Different from the lost continent of Lemuria as far as I know. I thought Lemuria was supposed to be in the Indian ocean though.

DreamerMMA

Yeah, great hiding place. A tourist hotspot in the middle of a giant playground for recreation. When your intergalactic outpost gets spotted on some teenagers tik tok video.

VikuSwav

Try "eye of the sahara" or Richat structure for that one

John_Durden

Lemuria?

cheeseape1

Lemuria was a hypotheticall lost continent that was theorized after living lemurs and fossils were discovered in Madagascar, India and South East Asia. The question was raised of how lemurs had made it such distances to isolated landmasses. Before continental drift was known about, it was theorized that there was a lost continent, ”Lemuria” or ”Mu”, that once connected the landmasses, thus allowing the spreading of species. This turned out to be false, however.

dxrey65

> Chunk of an ancient supercontinent discovered under New Zealand ...for a billion years, it slept. Some say it would still be slumbering today, that it might have never awoken, had it just been left alone. There was no way to know, let's not blame them. But it's hard not to think about how different the world could have been...

SerialMurderer

Isn’t this just Zealandia

KRodriguez26

Would love to read about this but these fuckers cut me off and asked me to pay :(

ksszr57

I first heard of this like 5 years ago and in an article it was apparently called zelandia or something

Take-the-stairs

So exactly what size of chunk are we talking here?...Data? pineapple? chocolate? Goonie?

PeachyNOLA

Just don't ask it to do the truffle shuffle.

Old Zeland?

DavidWantsHisBooze

Ah, this is where you guys are breeding the All Blacks.

anabolicartist

I’m assuming you’re getting downvoted because people think you’re making a racist comment and not referring to a [Rugby team…](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_national_rugby_union_team)

TomMakesPodcasts

They prefer All African-Lemurians

Im_Not_Even

*Pacific-Lemurians

raduqq

Brings another meaning to the saying "down under".

Badboy_killa7

Incoming Azerbaijanis claiming it as ancient azerbaijani lands😂😂😂

BluntopiaDarkstar

Everyone calling this “old zealand” is failing to understand how new a billion years old is for a continent, as well as how naming something new-anything works. Y’all ever heard of York, or England?

crookedarmjoe

New Mexico?

BluntopiaDarkstar

Shhhh don’t tell them Mexico exists

Saltmetoast

*old* Zeeland is in the Netherlands (Holland) Incase anyone was wondering

ritchiefw

So with this discovery, will New Zealand be called Old Zealand now?

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Haha. The original Zealand is in Denmark, so it’s taken I guess.

DesolateEverAfter

Netherlands, not Denmark.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

No, you are thinking of Zeeland. Zealand is in Denmark. I used to work in Zealand, so unless everyone in the Netherlands speaks danish and drinks Tuborg and Carlsberg all the time then I’m pretty sure it’s Denmark.

mifander

New Zealand was named by Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer and its named after Zeeland in the Netherlands.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Sure. My point was that Zealand the place that shares the spelling, is in Denmark.

DesolateEverAfter

But in reference to New Zealand, the original is the Dutch one. Also, the Dutch province of Zeeland is called Zealand in English in a historical context.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Everything you said I agree with, as it’s correct.

Saltmetoast

Technically correct is the best kind of correct

[deleted]

ProtoplanetaryNebula

You are thinking of Zeeland. Zealand is Denmark. The spelling is similar so I can see why you got confused. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zealand

vengeful_owl

We done been knew

homeinthetrees

I have a chunk of an ancient supercontinent in my back yard. I call it "Rock".

InvisibleLeftHand

Whoa this is such cheesy way to present it. It's not a "hidden" continent, it's just sunk. There's plenty of other geologic regions that got sunk long ago and are still near the surface, but that doesn't make them "continents". A continent by defnition is a land mass that is above the sea, or at least not covered by water.

mongtongbong

extra world bro

DrCreeper2020

A bunch of people made videos on YouTube about zealandiaa few years ago. This isn't new news
